Traceability beyond NIST The Boeing traceability to the international system of measurements (SI) traditionally comes from within the USA NIST capabilities cover the majority of calibration requests, but not all Boeing Metrology utilizes other NMI sources for mitigating calibration delivery, cost and capability challenges International product developmental testing requires updated calibrations under the local countries NMI
The advent of the CIPM-MRA Boeing has recently been one of the first industrial corporations to take advantage of the CIPM-MRA Boeing utilizes the CIPM-MRA equivalence data to support our global measurement system We rely on the peer reviewed NMI capabilities to support our emergent technologies
Access to BIPM Data Boeing appreciates the web access to the BIPM key comparison and capabilities data This is the ideal structure for implementing measurement solutions in our international business model: Supports an efficient calibration supplier approval process Allows Boeing to verify calibration supplier scope of accreditation Is recognized by our regulatory bodies (the system)
Resources for traceability The MRA helps Boeing: When a calibration capability exists only outside of NIST An example is High AC Voltage When the obstacles in an international setting are prohibitive An example is custom s fees and transportation costs exceeding calibration costs by orders of magnitude When out-sourcing calibrations Examples are international approved calibration suppliers
Calibration service supplier approvals The Boeing procedure for approving calibration suppliers cites the CIPM MRA, using it as a means of identifying qualified calibration capability The Boeing procedure for approving calibration suppliers cites the ILAC MRA, using it as a means of identifying qualified calibration laboratories
A welcome development The CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA), managed by the BIPM, is a wonderful development for measurement, particularly for Boeing Calibration costs are reduced Measurement solutions are more accessible Recognized calibrations are now possible in more of our customer s world It is, in fact, a welcome development and result of the Treaty of the Meter originally signed by Governments in 1875, adapted to serve world metrology outside the national measurement institutes in a practical and useful way
Agenda Boeing Company introduction Boeing and CIPM 787 Dreamliner highlights 787 Dreamliner testing
787 Dreamliner--redefining flight through innovation Advanced wing design Breakthrough passenger cabin Overhead crew rests Advanced flight deck Innovative systems technologies Composite primary structure Large cargo capacity Next-generation engines and nacelles
Advanced technologies contribute to efficiencies Numerous benefits and new design possibilities Lower fuel consumption Improved reliability Systems Higher residual value Better passenger experience Weight reduction Materials Simpler design fewer parts Aerodynamics Engines Greater flexibility Easier assembly Lower maintenance cost Faster cruising speed 20% lower fuel consumption 10% lower cash operating cost
Advanced aerodynamic design Clean wing design Raked wingtips Smaller flap track fairings Composite structure 7% more efficient than today s airplanes
Advanced systems technologies Fewer schedule disruptions More efficient energy usage Easier maintenance and updating Lower lifecycle costs
Next-generation engine technology Farther Faster Cleaner Quieter More efficient
Composites serve as primary structural material Lighter More durable Reduced corrosion and fatigue Reduced scheduled maintenance Opens new design possibilities Carbon laminate Carbon sandwich Other composites Aluminum Titanium Titanium/steel/ aluminum
Cleaner, quieter and more efficient 20% more fuel efficient ( liters/passenger 100 km) 20% reduction in carbon emissions (60-67g CO2/passenger km) 28% below CAEP 6 limits for NOx (2008 certification level) 60% smaller noise footprint Less manufacturing waste and fewer hazardous materials Smooth wing technology Next-generation engines Composites Compared to 767, except for NOx
787 provides a new sensation in passenger comfort Things you ll see Dramatic entryway Larger bins and windows Innovative lighting Things you ll feel Lower cabin altitude Improved humidity Better air quality Improved temperature control Smoother ride
