1 European passenger traffic up 5.6 during Q1 ACI EUROPE 6 square de Meeûs 1000 Brussels, Belgium For immediate release 9 May ACI EUROPE Airport Traffic Report - Brussels, 9 May : Q1 passenger traffic increased by some 5.6 compared with the first quarter in. In terms of monthly traffic flow, the overall passenger traffic at European airports increased by +7.0 in compared with. The overall freight traffic among European airports decreased -0.4 in when compared with the corresponding month in. The overall figure for movements at European airports increased +2.6 in when compared with. Passenger figures for once again indicate that Group 4 airports (airports welcoming less than 5 million passengers per year) had the largest increase in traffic - with an average increase of when compared with - and an average increase of when compared with Airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year (Group 1), airports welcoming between 10 and 25 million passengers (Group 2) and airports welcoming between 5 and 10 million passengers (Group 3) reported an average change of +6.0, +6.6 and +6.4 respectively when compared with. The same comparison of with 2003 demonstrates an average increase of +14.6, and respectively. Examples of airports that experienced the highest increase in passenger traffic per group, when comparing with, include: Group 1 airports: London Gatwick (+15.4), Madrid Barajas (+12.0), and Paris Charles de Gaulle (+6.3); Group 2 airports: Lisbon (+19.9), Manchester (+13.3), and Dublin (+12.5); Group 3 airports: Budapest (+41.8), Warsaw (+19.5), and Geneva (+17.9); Group 4 airports: Katowice (+264.5), Riga (+104.2) and Valencia (+47.1). Katowice (KTW) and Olbia (OLB) are the latest airports to be included in the report. To reflect better this development, airport groups will be classified in line with a definition developed in a European Commission working paper. As such, the airports in this report are now divided into four groups based on yearly passenger figures from - according to the following definitions: Group 1 - major airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year; Group 2 - large airports welcoming between 10 and 25 million passengers per year; Group 3 - medium sized airports welcoming between 5 and 10 million passengers per year; and Group 4 - small airports welcoming less than 5 million passengers per year.
