7 3. e-airport project ; Government IT Strategy HQ Decision e-japan Strategy (June, 2001) Advanced high speed internet infrastructure Development of enhanced education system & human resource Promote electronic commercial transactions Improve government work process & public service Information security & reliability Japan New IT Strategy (January, 2006) Realize a society where the benefits of IT are available for everyone at anytime, anywhere. ( In this new strategy, Government clearly sets out the SPT concept.) Achieve automation of identification and passenger procedures and full optimization of airport procedures to enable airport safety and fast processing. 7
8 e-information Before departing for the airport, passengers will use e-information to look up flight and transport schedules and plan their departure time from home and the optimum transport route simply by entering their flight number and closest railway station. 3. e-airport project; e-airport Concept at Narita e-check in On moving into the passenger terminal, passengers can use automatic check in kiosks. The use of biometrics installed in kiosks for passenger identification improves security, and simplifies check-in, passport control and other procedures. e-tag e-tag is also an important part of the e- Airport concept and the focal point of hands-free travel. The e-tags are actually RFID tags with embedded IC chips. Prior to departure, passengers will be able to select hands-free travel as an option and a delivery company will pick up their baggage at home and deliver it to the airport where it will be automatically put into the baggage handling system, pass through the security inspection system and be delivered at the destination airport. Airport Net Airport Net provides Internet cafes and coin operated Internet terminals throughout the airport. It is also the project that has fostered the development of an extensive wireless LAN network with broadband Internet access throughout the arrival and departure zones. 8
