Introduction UAS- Unmanned Aircraft System Unmanned aircraft (UA) Control system- ground Control Station (GCS) Control link, datalink and Other related support equipment
Introduction cont. Unmanned aircraft (UA) Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) Remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) Remotely operated aircraft (ROA)
Introduction cont. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot. Drone stands for Dynamic Remotely Operated Navigation Equipment Its flight is ether controlled autonomously by computer or under the remote control of a pilot on the ground.
Introduction cont. Crewmember: In addition to the crewmembers identified in 14 CFR Part 1, a UAS flight crew member includes pilots, visual observers (VO), but may also include other persons as required to ensure safe operation of the aircraft. National Airspace System (NAS): The common network of U.S. airspace air navigation facilities, equipment, and services; airports or landing areas; aeronautical charts, information and services; rules, regulations, and procedures; technical information; and manpower and material.
Introduction cont. NEXGEN or Next Generation Air Transportation System (2025): NextGen is a series of inter-linked programs, systems, and policies that implement advanced technologies and capabilities to dramatically change the way the current aviation system is operated. FAR or Federal Aviation Regulations, are rules prescribed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) governing all aviation activities in the United States. The FARs are part of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
AIDS Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome
History The earliest attempt at powered unmanned aerial vehicle 1915 After World War-I first scale RPV Birth of U.S. UAVs began in 1950 s
History 1964 Navy initiated classified UAV combat missions over Vietnam War 1960 s Tom Cat Drone Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) Target Drone 2000 s over Afghanistan 2010 s commercial use 2000 s M-9 Reaper
Uses of UAVs Counter terrorism activity: Border patrol Armed attacks Commercial aerial: Transportation Oil, gas & mineral exploration & production Scientific research
Beer Delivery
Uses of UAV s In search & rescue Reconnaissance
Advantages Does not contain, or need, a qualified pilot on board Can enter environments that are dangerous to human life Reduces the exposure risk of the aircraft operator Performing visual or thermal imaging Can be programmed to complete missions autonomously even when contact with its GCS is lost
Disadvantages Immoral Civilian casualties Angers many people Weather Refuel in flight If contact is lost with ground station, vehicle may be lost
The mission of the FAA is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world.

Special Airworthiness Certificate Special Airworthiness Certificate- Experimental Category Application process 180 days Period up to one year Certified pilots Airworthiness Continuing Airworthiness Program Maintenance Program Vehicles must be approved Can not operate- Circular (Model Aircraft Operating Standards) Densely populated areas Congested airways Near airports
Fire, Hazmat, Police, Boarder, FBI, etc.- flying for a mission
Public Entities Certificate of Waver or Authorization (COA) Public entities only Application process 90 days Good for one year Specific altitude limitations
Public Entities cont. Airworthiness Continuing Airworthiness Program Maintenance Training Program Any unique skill sets or maintenance practices Airborne or ground based observers
Public Entities cont. Flight Operations Comply with See and Avoid Onboard cameras/ Sensors Airborne or ground based observers Radar/ Other sensors UAV Pilot & Supplemental Pilots Second-class Medical Required Pilot Certificate
