15 Environmental permit process in Sweden To operate an airport the airport operator has to apply at the Environmental Court for an environmental permit. The permit Includes conditions regarding maximum number of flights, flight paths, noise levels, CO 2 -emissions, water protection, preventive actions, measurments, reporting etc. Strong democratic process. All local and national authorities, municipalities, neighbours (noise abatement associations in nearby communities and private persons) give their opinion on the application The Arlanda airport applied for a permit in the 90ies before building the third runway Arlanda applied for a new permit in 2008 and received one from Environmental Court

24 Sustainability Economy Openness & dialogue Air travel and the environment In Sweden, domestic air travel accounts for about 1 per cent of the transport sector s CO 2 emissions. All flights at Swedish airports account for about 5 percent of total emissions Globally, air travel accounts for about 2 per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions Has reduced total emissions by over 30 per cent in the period per cent more fuel-efficient to fly over the past 40 years.
