3 The Role of the FAA FAA is a Regulator Must ensure the uncompromising safety of all aircraft, people, and property FAA is a Service Provider Must ensure the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System and all international airspace delegated to the U.S. Successful UAS Integration requires BOTH roles FAA has established a single integration office 3

5 Why Does the FAA Use the Term UAS? The term UAS was included in the Federal Register Docket in February 2007: The components of a UAS includes an aircraft and a control station A UAS is flown by a pilot in command 5

8 Steps to September 2015 Integration On-going interaction with JPDO, UAS ExCom and Partner agencies to define needs/appropriate level of integration Implement advanced mitigation strategies, such as Ground-Based Sense and Avoid, to safely increase access Streamlined the COA process for Law Enforcement (use of Common Strategy ) Access for small UAS in the Arctic Implement a small UAS rule by August,
