5 Mauritius Capital: Port Louis Population: 1.3 million Currency: Rupee National languages: English, French, Creole. Religion: Hinduism (48.5%), Christianity (32.7%), Islam (17.2%) Did you know pineapples grow in bushes? Le Morne Brabant Known to Arab and Malay sailors as early as the 10th century, Mauritius was first explored by the Portuguese in the 16th century and subsequently settled by the Dutch, the French and the British in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries respectively. It finally gained independence in Mauritius is the second biggest island belonging to the group of islands called the Mascarenes or 'Mascareignes' as they are called in French. Rodrigues island and some other smaller islands belong to Mauritius too. The island was created by volcanic activity more than 8 million years ago. There are many scenic waterfalls especially in the south west of the island. The island's highest mountain is the 'Peak of the Little Black River', Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire, with 828m or 2,717ft. Mauritius is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs. There is 177km (110mi) of coastline, much of it covered by white, sandy beaches. Mauritius is the most densely populated country on the African continent and also one of the most prosperous and rich countries on the continent. There are so many exciting places, amazing white sandy beaches, picturesque towns and villages, ancient military ruins to visit. Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens: Explore the tropical gardens and see the giant water lilies in the pond and stroke the giant tortoises. Go swimming with dolphins in Tamarin Bay. French, English and Creole are the main languages in Mauritius. English is considered by many as the main business language, however newspapers and TV and radio news are mainly in French. In fact, most people speak Mauritian Creole at home. Further various Asian languages such as Tamil, Urdu, Hindi or Mandarin are spoken by the Indian and Chinese population. Mauritians are friendly and welcoming people. The Mauritian people form a multi-ethnic society which means they are mainly of mixed races and have ancestors of Asian, Indian, French, British and Chinese origins. The majority are descendants from Indian people and are referred to as Indo-Mauritians. In 2017, Mauritius was named one of only four countries in the world which had no involvement in ongoing international or domestic conflict and no tensions with neighbouring countries. The others were Botswana, Chile and Uruguay. Sugarcane is the main agricultural product in Mauritius. Pineapple plantations can also be seen all over the island. Mauritian main dishes contain: fresh vegetables, fruits and fish. The cuisine is well known for its freshness and exotic spices. Mauritius was the only known habitat of the dodo. Dutch sailors likely first encountered the flightless bird in Within 100 years, ship rats and other introduced animals had wiped out the species. The last confirmed sightings were in the 1660s. Mauritius being in the middle of the Indian Ocean faces the brunt of cyclonic storms several times a year.
