The steep ridgeline ascent has spectacular views and the slopes of Mt Meru are home to a large wildlife population including elephants and mountain reedbuck. Fit and acclimatised, and in the company of our experienced guides and crew, we then follow the relatively remote Rongai Route on Kilimanjaro. We are aiming for spectacular sunrise views from the summit of Africa. World Expeditions goes to great lengths to avoid such payments where possible and as such only a handful of our trips are affected by this practice in Africa. When it is not possible to avoid such payments, be assured that we have thoroughly investigated the reasons for the payments to ensure we continue to uphold our responsible travel practices. We also ensure that where these payments arise, that their amount is kept to a minimum and any cash is handed over at the commencement of the trip to reduce any risk to our travellers associated with carrying cash. If you have any questions or concerns, please do contact us. detailed itinerary DAY 1 Join Arusha Today is an arrival day. If you choose to fly into Kilimanjaro Airport we recommend a private transfer to Arusha. We stay at the Ilboru Safari Lodge which has spacious rooms, a pool, and restaurant. In the late afternoon you will meet the rest of the group and your guide for a trip briefing at 15:00hrs at the hotel. The evening is spent at your leisure. meals: NIL DAY 2 To Ngorongoro Crater, game viewing This morning you will be collected to depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We drive across the floor of the rift valley then on the only route up the Rift Valley Escarpment to the Ngorongoro Highlands. We then take the steep road down to the crater floor for some incredible game viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater. There is little to no movement of animals to and from the crater due to the steep, forested walls of the extinct volcano. This is one of the last refuges for the endangered black rhino in northern Tanzania and with a permanent water supply also provides habitat for a rich diversity and high density of other wildlife species. Overnight at lodge (or similar). DAY 3 Drive to Serengeti, game viewing After an early breakfast we depart for the Serengeti National Park. On the way we may spot some wildlife and also visit Olduvai Gorge, an ancient archaeological site where some of the earliest human remains were discovered. At certain times of the year (December to April) the wildebeest migration is usually found in the south west of the park, near the border with the Crater Highlands. Of course wildlife is unpredictable, so a guarantee of this is not possible. However, we can keep our fingers crossed that we might be in the right place at the right time! The Serengeti is an amazing wildlife sanctuary and at all times of the year game viewing is incredible. 4 responsible travel The environments we travel through are fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions were the proud recipients of the inaugural Australian National Travel Industry s Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook. This detailed guide to responsible and sustainable travel is provided to all World Expeditions clients before they travel. Please ask your consultant if you have not received your copy of our award winning book. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website trip grading Moderate to Challenging As with all our Moderate to Challenging programs, we expect clients to be regular outdoors people, enjoying aerobic sport around three or four times a week over some period of time. Preferably this has been a long term interest but if not, you have set a program of fitness preparation with at least three months lead in time to your trip. The fitter you are for your trip, the more of a holiday it will be. Activities as close to the actual activity on your trip are the best training; in this instance hill walking, with and without a daypack. This builds leg strength, aerobic capacity and confidence in your ability to walk comfortably with a pack for extended periods. At the same time, you are also comfortable with the layers you like to wear and footwear. Whilst this ascent of Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb, it is nevertheless a short and steep trek at altitude, and for many people it will be the hardest physical walk of their life. In order to get the most out of the trip, people should join in Marangu with a maximum state of fitness. There is not time to get fit on the trek as with some of our other longer trek programs in other parts of the world. Talk to us if you DAY 4 Serengeti National Park Today we explore the Serengeti in search of wildlife. We make the most of early morning and evening game drives when the animals are most active so will begin and end the day as the sun rises and sets. The day will be long but the thrill of seeking and finding wildlife is exhilarating. After dark, the sounds of the African night may be heard outside our window, making the whole wilderness experience truly memorable. Overnight Serengeti Sopa Lodge (or similar). DAY 5 Fly to Arusha This morning we may do another short game drive if time permits before transferring to the airstrip for our late morning flight to Arusha. The flight is about an hour and we will be transferred to our hotel on arrival where we will have time to prepare our gear for our climbs on Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro. (Note: flight schedules from the Serengeti to Arusha are subject to change without notice so you need to remain flexible on the timings today.) Overnight hotel. meals: B DAY 6 Commence Meru ascent We pick you up from your Arusha Hotel at 8.00am and transfer to Momella Gate (1500m), the start point of Mt Meru climb. The track soon passes open grassland, where there is a good chance of seeing buffalo and warthogs, and then continues as a steady climb through montane forest. We have lunch near the Fig Tree Arch, which is big enough to drive a car through! After lunch, the route continues through less dense forest, where there is an abundance of birds and monkeys. The black and white colobus monkeys are particularly fascinating to watch. By mid-afternoon, we see our first views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. We reach Miriakamba Hut (2514m), situated in an idyllic grassy glade, in time to enjoy the last of the afternoon sun and beautiful views over the surrounding plains towards Kilimanjaro. Overnight mountain hut. (Approx. 5-6 hours walking) DAY 7 To Saddle Hut (3-6 hours walking) The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short but steep climb. We walk through beautiful, lush montane forest to reach Elephant Ridge, the halfway point. This has excellent views of the summit ridge and across most of the crater floor. During a break, you might spot elephants or other animals from our vantage point. The path continues uphill through giant heather and other moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut (3570m), where lunch is waiting. The afternoon is free to rest and enjoy the views. Those with more energy can make the short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3820m) for superb views just before sunset. Overnight mountain hut. DAY 8 To the Summit (Socialist Peak 4556m) (10-12hrs) We begin with an early start at around 2.00am to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3800m), and then continue along an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4350m) arriving at around sunrise. The views are stunning: the cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the Crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds and west towards the Rift Valley if the weather is clear. The summit of Socialist Peak (4566m) is another hour further along a steep but spectacular path. On a clear day, the views are absolutely rewarding. The route back to Rhino Point along a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa. We rest, and have brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to Miriakamba Hut (2514m). Overnight mountain hut World Expeditions Travel Group - Joe Kennedy 6/30/2017 4:38:33 PM

are unsure about your suitability for the Rongai route; we would be happy to discuss your level of experience and fitness. adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your consultant or travel agent. important note These trip notes represent the most current information for this itinerary, and may supersede any information in the current brochure, including but not limited to the itinerary and price. The itinerary should be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature and other circumstances beyond our control. DAY 9 Complete climb, Transfer to Marangu (2-3 hours walking) We take the direct route down towards Momella through open grassland and mixed forest, with good chances of seeing wildlife once again. This trail has excellent views back towards the crater and over the plains of the National Park. We should reach Momella Gate by late morning and from here will be transferred to Marangu for overnight in a lodge. meals: B,L DAY 10 Commence 6 day Rongai climb (2600m, approx 3-4 hrs) After completing the necessary registration formalities at Marangu National Park gate, we transfer for 2.5 hours to Rongai. The climb begins from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru (1950m) on a small path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb gently through pretty forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey. These monkeys are black with a long cape of white hair and a flowing white tail. The forest begins to thin out and our first camp, Rongai One, is at the edge of the moorland zone (2600m) with extensive views over the Kenyan plains. DAY 11 Kikelewa Caves (3600m, approx 4-5 hrs) The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave (3450m) with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater of Kilimanjaro. After lunch, we leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Our campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant senecios near Kikelewa Caves. DAY 12 Mawenzi Tarn (4330m, approx 3-4 hrs) A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb all-round views and a tangible sense of wilderness. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (4330m), spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatisation. DAY 13 Walk to Kibo (4700m, approx 5-6 hrs) We cross the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite (4700m) situated at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night. DAY 14 Ascend summit (5985m) then to Horombo Hut (11-15 hrs) We will start the final, and by far the steepest and most demanding, part of the climb by torchlight around midnight. We walk very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman s Point (5685m). We will rest here for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (5895m); passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo (4700m) is surprisingly fast and, after some refreshment, we continue descending to reach our final campsite at Horombo (3720m). The trekking today involves 11 to 15 hours of walking, made more strenuous by the effects of altitude and extreme cold. This section of the trek is the steepest and most demanding part of the climb and should not be taken lightly. It is a good idea to bring your own head torch so that your hands are free for balance. Most people are surprised by the extreme cold and the best advice is to follow the clothing list and pack your warm clothes World Expeditions Travel Group - Joe Kennedy 6/30/2017 4:38:33 PM

DAY 15 Descend to Marangu & drive to Arusha (5-6hrs) A steady descent from Horombo takes us down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2700m); we then continue descending through lush rainforest to the National Park gate at Marangu (1830 m) where we will pick up our vehicle and drive the 2.5 hours to our hotel in Arusha. meals: B,L DAY 16 In Arusha, trip concludes After breakfast, the trip concludes. meals: B This itinerary is subject to change with any change in Community regulations as well as Governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control. suggested extensions Zanzibar Retreat / Zanzibar Stone Town and Coast Mt Kenya Ascent Gorilla Safari / Gorilla Adventure Selous & Ruaha Fly In Safari country information Tanzania is the largest country of East Africa, being almost 950,000 sq km and made up mainly of a dry highland plateau, with a narrow strip of low lying coast and the off shore islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. The Rift Valley, containing some of the world s most magnificent and famous game reserves, sweeps down into Tanzania from Kenya and is covered by many inland lakes; Tanzania s highest mountains Meru and Africa s highest, Mt Kilimanjaro lie on or close to the Kenyan border in the north of the country. With a heritage of British and German colonialism and the strong influence of the Portuguese and Arab traders felt along the coast Tanganyika gained it s independence in 1961 and merged with the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba to become Tanzania. Being guided very much by it s president for 20 years, Nyerere, it launched into a radical socialist experiment in self reliance but with little western aid and as one of the world s poorest countries, it s experiment had little chance of success. Today Tanzania is still largely agricultural and depends very much on its tourism for economic survival. With a population of more than 25 million, including over 100 different tribal groups, the majority of people are Bantu, while Arabic features and cultural traits show up throughout the coastal and island communities. The Masai are in evidence in the north of the country, although they no longer hold the large areas they once did and are found across the larger national parks and games reserves. climate Generally April and May are the months with long rains and should be avoided if considering this climb. November brings short rains but it seldom rains all day. As a general rule, Tanzania is usually warm by day and cool by night. Temperatures rarely rise above 27C during the day or fall below minus 10C at night although these conditions are guidelines only and obviously vary with altitude and topography. In spite of its equatorial location, Kilimanjaro can have severe weather conditions at the higher altitudes and you need to be prepared for temperatures well below freezing at the summit, minus 15C is not uncommon. On the lower slopes, it will usually be mild warm during the day and cold at night. Some rain can occur at any time on the mountain World Expeditions Travel Group - Joe Kennedy 6/30/2017 4:38:33 PM

a typical day On safari, we will generally wake early and commence our game drives after breakfast. This allows us to maximise our time to see the animals when they are most active. We take a packed lunch and return to our tented camp or lodge in the late afternoon. On trekking days, we aim to rise early, pack up our gear and have breakfast by 7.30am, before getting on the trail by 8.00am. The staff would normally prepare cereal, eggs, bread, and hot drinks. Water bottles should be filled if they have not already been filled from the night before. We trek on average 6 8 hours per day, with summit day being anything from 11 to 15 hours, or possibly more depending on your pace and number of breaks. Local people will carry our trek pack (each member s trek pack should not exceed 12kgs*), as well as our other camp gear. Lunches will be either a hot lunch with soup, salads and bread or a packed lunch with sandwiches, biscuits and fruit etc. Dinner will be prepared by our cook and include a soup and main dish of stewed vegetables and meat with rice or potatoes or similar, followed by a dessert and hot drinks. (*12kg limit on Meru, 15kg limit on Kili kit bags/ trek packs are not provided) dietary requirements Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut free or allergen free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self administering these medications. accommodation on the trip We generally use various hotels of a good standard (3 star approx). All accommodation is on a twin share basis, unless single rooms are requested and paid for in advance. arrival and departure information We cannot arrange, and do not recommend, arrival transfers from JRO airport to Arusha or Marangu hotels between the hours of 21:00 and 06:00hrs for security reasons. If you do arrive or depart between these times, we strongly recommend you stay at Kia Lodge (the airport hotel). An arrival transfer is included in the room rate and the hotel is a 5 min drive from the airport. We can arrange a transfer from here to Arusha or Marangu (or vice versa) at an appropriate time (additional cost applies). what you carry In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing, a rain jacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip eze etc. You may wish to bring some boiled sweets or muesli/energy bars that you like specially, for the trail. Porters carry all group gear and your trek pack. equipment required Specialist gear required include walking boots, day pack, trek pack/ kit bag to store your main trek gear which porters carry (a comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre departure information provided on booking) World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 11/30/2017 4:33:45 AM

acute mountain sickness When we ascend above 2500 meters our bodies have to acclimatise to the decreasing amount of the oxygen available. To allow our bodies to adjust we have structured our treks so that you ascend slowly, allowing acclimatisation to occur. However, during the acclimatisation process, you may experience some of the following symptoms. Headache Tiredness Disturbed sleep Loss of appetite/nausea Shortness of breath Cough Palpitation Swelling of the hands and face Individuals acclimatise at different rates. Your best strategy is to take your time and drink plenty of water. These symptoms may not indicate the onset of A.M.S. and if you experience them it does not necessarily mean that you should not continue. All our group leaders have extensive first aid training and we urge you to communicate with the group leader at all times should you believe you have any symptoms in order that we can effectively monitor your symptoms. The only cure for Acute Mountain Sickness is to descend. Please note that your group leader has ultimate responsibility and may ask you to descend if symptoms persist. porter initiatives Porter Welfare in Tanzania and Kenya: Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Mount Kenya Porters are an integral part of the World Expeditions philosophy and style of travel. We take our travellers off the beaten track, avoiding the congested trails, to experience our often remote tent based adventures this style of trekking is enabled by porters. When we trek, the entire group travellers, guides and porters alike are a team who share the same needs for safety in the mountain environment. Our Tanzanian and Kenyan porters receive the following: *Since 2012 World Expeditions has sponsored a guide every year to complete a scholarship course through the Kilimanjaro Guide Scholarship Foundation, which will train them in Tour Operations, Tourism Geography, Wildlife Knowledge and Basic Computer Application. *Porters are paid a rate in excess of the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistant Project (KPAP) recommended minimum wage for porters. *Porters receive at least two meals a day; the third meal is sometimes a snack/tea as this can work best with the itinerary and water supplies etc. We make sure there are more than adequate amounts of food and have a system to check on the mountain that all porters get well fed. *Porters are not to carry more then 20kgs. *The minimum age for a Porter is 18 and there is no maximum age, we assess based on health and willingness to work. *Porters access the same medical kit and evacuation processes as the travellers. Off Mount Kilimanjaro any costs for treatment to injuries that are sustained during work are also covered. *Porters are expected to come to a climb with the correct personal equipment. We regularly provide them with equipment such as sleeping bags and mats, waterproof jackets, gloves, warm hats and walking boots. *We are at the forefront of the process of changing local perceptions of sexual inequality by employing female crew on Mount Kilimanjaro. We have 2 highly successful female guides, a female cook and around 30 female porters World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 11/30/2017 4:33:45 AM

World Expeditions supports the good work of a number of international organisations that operate to ensure the health and education of porters, they are: International Porter Protection Group >> International Mountain Explorers Connection >> Kilimanjaro Guide Scholarship Foundation Inc. >> wildlife The wilderness areas of Africa are populated by large numbers of wild and potentially dangerous animals. The trip aims to view these animals in their natural habitat, uncontrolled by fences. Your experienced guides will make every effort to ensure the safety of the group at all times. Please be aware that all safari travel, including vehicle safaris in the proximity of wild animals is never entirely without risk. By travelling into wild areas in search of wild animals, all participants accept that they are choosing an adventure that includes an element of risk and this is an inherent aspect of the enjoyment of this style of travel. ngorongoro crater Ngorongoro Crater has been called the eighth wonder of the natural world and was designated a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. The crater represents only about 3% of the entire Ngorongoro Conservation Area which covers 8,280 sq km. The region contains at least seven extinct volcanoes and has probably one of the most varied terrains in East Africa. The Crater is a very picturesque setting for viewing and photographing wildlife and as the animals are familiar with vehicles, we can get really close to them, giving us an excellent opportunity to study their behaviour. The usual grassland dwelling animals live in the crater: wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, warthogs and the predators include bat eared foxes, jackals, hyenas, lions and rarely seen cheetahs. With over 30,000 animals, the Ngorongoro Crater can be regarded as a Garden of Eden. The 100 sq km caldera is home to the last black rhinos to be found in Tanzania and also has the highest density of lions anywhere in Africa. The rhino population here is carefully protected and they are quite commonly seen. serengeti national park Serengeti National Park is the most famous of Tanzania s parks its name is derived from the Masai word siriget, meaning endless plain. The park, with an area of 14,763 sq km, was gazetted in Apart from being the largest national park in East Africa, the Serengeti is home to one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world the migration of nearly two million wildebeest. The migration involves not only wildebeest but also the predators that prey on the newborn, the sick and the old. Between December and April the wildebeest begin to move on to the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is here that up to 300,000 calves are born in January and February each year. Packs of hyenas can be seen skirting the edges of groups of wildebeests, waiting to prey on any weak or young victims up to 30% are lost in the first two months from predators. After the rains in May, the wildebeest migrate north and west towards the permanent water of the Grumeti River. With an altitude that varies between 914m and 1828m, vast open plains with lofty rocky outcrops and small forests of acacia and savannah woodland scrub dominate the Serengeti. This world famous wildlife sanctuary contains the greatest and most spectacular concentration of game found anywhere in the world. Mammals: In addition to its herds of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and other plains game, the Serengeti is renowned for its lion population. If you re lucky you may even see a leopard lazing on the branch of a tree, shading itself from the sun. During the migration, game animals, chiefly zebra and wildebeest, move away from their usual haunts on the central plains and into the corridor World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 11/30/2017 4:33:45 AM

Birds: Nobody, at whatever level of interest in ornithology, can fail to notice the wealth of birdlife in the Serengeti. Colourful rollers, bee eaters, kingfishers and sunbirds are common, while among the larger species saddle billed and marabou storks, secretary birds and ostriches are the easiest to spot. vehicles & safety During the course of your trip, we will use a variety of vehicles, all of which are fit for purpose and the conditions encountered. It should be noted that laws governing transportation safety may differ from those in your home country and on occasion some vehicles may not have seat belts fitted.
