The Kruger Park was established in 1898 to protect wildlife and covers an area of 2 million hectares. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Apart from the irresistible magnet of this wildlife mecca, some spectacular scenery can be viewed in the mountainous area known as the Panorama Route, en route to the Kruger Park. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK PACKAGES Two- to five-day packages are available. On these tours a tour guide accompanies the guests for the duration of the tour. On the three-day package, both nights are spent in the Kruger National Park and on the four-day package, you spend one night on the scenic Panorama Route with its waterfalls, forests and Gold Rush towns and two nights in the Kruger National Park. On the five-day package you spend two nights on the Panorama Route and two nights in the Kruger National Park. PRIVATE GAME LODGE PACKAGES Some of these privately owned reserves are integrated with the world-famous Kruger National Park. The lodges cater for smaller groups, and day and night game drives are conducted in open vehicles by qualified game rangers and trackers. Accompanied game walks in the bush are also offered by most of the lodges. While enjoying a bushveld sunset, you are served sundowners, and when darkness sets in, spotlights are switched on for the night drive. Dinners are lamp-lit affairs in an open-air reed boma (shelter) under the star-studded African sky. Famed for regular leopard sightings, you are almost guaranteed to come across the Big Five during your stay.
