2 HI, MY NAME IS HYEJIN Hyejin Jang Class of 2019 Major: Art History Certificate: Archaeology, History and the Practice of Diplomacy This is when I was on a safari tour in Uganda!

3 I WAS LOOKING FOR A summer internship experience that takes me to a place that I have never been to, and would likely not go to without an opportunity through Princeton. is relevant to the Arts and Culture sector and offers a practical work experience is meaningful in a way that I leave an impact (instead of making copies and coffee) is fun!!

4 MY CHOICE WAS Bayimba Cultural Foundation Location: Kampala, Uganda Vision: A vibrant arts and culture sector that is professional, creative and viable and contributes to social and economic development in Uganda and East Africa.

6 MY WORK RESPONSIBILITY WAS Conducting strategy research for the capital campaign of the new construction project of Bayimba Center for Visual and Performing Arts Basically, figuring out the most effective way for Bayimba to raise the funds for this project Our supervisor, Faisal, gave us a lot of autonomy and room to be creative. He trusted us and communicated very well. It was great!

7 I DID A LOT OF THINGS Analysis of the financial flow of Uganda s arts and culture sector Analysis of Bayimba s previous budget Existing donor base research Potential donor base research Fundraising strategy research and tailoring the result for Bayimba Communication with Bayimba s international liaisons And more!!!

8 A N I M PA C T We hope that the products our work will be an asset and a guideline for Bayimba and the Capital Campaign Team. - Left: Cover of our final paper that summarizes our research and recommends capital campaign strategies. - Right: The staff of Bayimba gathered for the final presentation about our work. One of the most rewarding moments of my summer!

9 NOW I M THINKING My experience at Bayimba made me think about The Arts industry and the extent that money influences art NGO or consulting as a career The meaning of the Arts in a developing nation, where health, education, etc seemingly are more imminent issues that receive a lot of funding Making art accessible to everyone, even to those who are socioeconomically struggling My privileges that I perhaps have been taking granted for, and ways to use them to benefit others in need What it could feel like to be different, especially in terms of race and identity, and the importance of diversity and inclusion. Living as a female Asian foreigner in Uganda where most of the population is homogenous was sometimes difficult.

10 P L U S, U G A N D A I S E X C I T I N G A N D B E A U T I F U L Here are some things that I did and saw in Uganda. - Princeton interns traveled together! We went rafting on the Nile River, and went on a safari tour at Murchison Falls National Park. - I went horseback riding and was on a boat cruise, too.

11 I V E G O T M O R E - My host family took us to the Equator, and invited us to a wedding event of a relative. - My colleagues at work recommended a music festival, and I watched local artists perform. - Also visited the largest mosque in East Africa! It s located in Kampala. And much more!!

12 Uganda can be difficult, because it s different. But because it is, everything is that much exciting! I stayed positive and took in everything that was sometimes being thrown at me. I had a wonderful time. And you will too! hyejinj@princeton.edu Feel free to contact for more questions.
