3 Corporation conducting feasibility studies to build over 2,400 km railway projects The Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) said feasibility studies are underway to begin the construction of over 2,400 km of railway projects in various parts of the country. ( FBC) The railway projects will be commenced in the coming three years with funds to be secured from financers after the studies are concluded, Dereje Tefera, Public Relations Head at ERC told FBC yesterday. According to him, the projects include the second phase of the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit, Modjo-Konso- Shashemene-Hawassa, Finoteselam-Bahir Dar- Werota- Woldia and Jima- Guraferda-Dima lines, among others. Finoteselam-Bahir Dar- Werota- Woldia railway extends 454km, while Modjo- Konso-Shashemene-Hawassa, which will later be stretched up to Moyale, will have a 950km length. Other railway projects which would be executed by the corporation over the coming ten years include.sodo- Arbaminch-Weyto, Hawassa- Moyale-Iteya-Endeto-Ginir, Addis Ababa-Desie-Humera- Decho-Galafi lines. 3
4 Power Pool commends Ethiopia for regional power market Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) has commended Ethiopia for creating an opportunity for a regional power market. ( FBC) Ethiopia has massive hydro power as well as geothermal resources which is cheaper and cleaner than power generated from hydrocarbon, said the group s Secretary General, Lebbi Changullah. Ethiopia s power system expansion plan considers interconnection and power trade with neighboring countries, the SG said while talking exclusively to ENA. Ethiopia s continuous development of large hydropower is an immensely important move for the development of the power market in the region. Changullah said Ethiopia is one of the founding members of EAPP, praising the country for its active and important role for the development of the regional power pool. He mentioned that the implementations of Ethio- Djibouti, Ethio-Sudan interconnections as well as the ongoing Ethio-Kenya interconnection project are significant contributions towards the realization of the eastern Africa interconnected grid. When countries are interconnected, the development of large power plants becomes more economical because of increased utilization factor and is a clearly superior alternative to development of smaller projects with isolated national grids, The SG said. Interconnecting the region enables improved social and cultural experience because living conditions improve when people get access to cheaper energy. He also positively noted progresses of the projects being implemented including the Ethio-Kenya 500 kv interconnector, the Kenya- Tanzania-Zambia 400 kv interconnector and the 220 kv interconnectors among NELSAP countries. He said: We also aware about the feasibility study of the Ethiopia-Sudan-Egypt interconnector which together with the Ethiopia-Kenya- Tanzania-Zambia interconnector will realize the Cape to Cairo interconnection. Finance for the implementation of interconnectors and power generation project is the major challenge since power pooling requires interconnection and availability of energy for trading, according to Secretary General. CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Engineer Azeb Asnake on her part mentioned continued efforts by Ethiopia to create power interconnection in the region. In line with its 25-year power sector master plan, Ethiopia ventures on its vast renewable energy sources which create opportunities to supply the region with cheap and clean energy, the CEO said. The regional power interconnection entails multifaceted advantages including integrating the region economically. 4
5 Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Delivers New Stadium Ethiopia Ethiopia s growing football infrastructural development has been boosted by the completion of another state of the art modern stadium in Woldia City. ( Addis Insight) The 25,000 sitting capacity stadium is named after Ethiopian born Saudi Arabian billionaire Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Almoudi who financed the massive project at a cost of about USD 25M. Others features of the stadium: -Covered roof, a first in Ethiopia -Sports Complex (Swimming pools, Basketball fields, Volleyball fields, Handball fields, Ground Tennis fields) -Two training fields and rooms enough for four teams at a time -Two VIP areas, one w ith bullet proof glass -Media room with sound proof w alls -Electronic gate entry system for maximum security -Helicopter landing pad for emergency evacuations -Parking space for more than 1000 cars and numerous shops The stadium will be officially inaugurated in October this year. It w ill be home to Ethiopian premier league side Woldia City FC starting the new 2016/17 season. Ethiopia also boast other tw o new international standards stadiums in Hawassa and Bahir Dar. 5
6 Ethiopian to Start Flying to Comoros Capital City Ethiopian Airlines has reportedly finalized preparations to commence flight to Moroni, the capital city of Comoros beginning October 30, ( ENA) With the new flight, travelers to and from Moroni will get seamless and convenience connectivity options via Addis Ababa to its global network, Ethiopian Airlines said. According to a press release of the airline, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tew olde Gebremariam said the new flight w ill play a big role in bolstering intracontinental linkage. ''We believe our flights to Moroni and elsew here in our beloved continent, Africa, contribute positively to the overall development of the continent and serve as a critically essential vehicle for the flow of investment, trade and tourism,'' he w as quoted as saying. Moroni w ill be Ethiopian s 54th African destination, after Cape Town, Gaborone, Goma, Yaoundé and Durban that joined the vast intra-african network of the airline in the justended Ethiopian fiscal year. According to the press release, Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) is the fastest grow ing Airline in Africa. In its seven decades of operation, it has become one of the continent s leading carriers, unrivalled in efficiency and operational success. 6
