7 CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION This chapter introduces the report by giving insight on the Background, Arrangement of the report, Limitations of the data, Data Sources and Methodology. 1.1 Background The Tourism statistics report is an annual publication that depicts the statistics of non-citizens including temporary residents entering and leaving the country. The common terms used for these are Arrivals and Departures. The 2015 report is slightly different from the previous reports as it includes a new chapter that deals specifically with tourists. This chapter features discussion on international tourist movements and their demographic characteristics. The comprehensive statistics compiled in this report include Arrivals and Departures of visitors and non-visitors by country and region of nationality, residence, purpose of entry, mode of travel used, point of entry and exit as well as gender and age distribution. The information contained in this report is derived from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Arrival/Departure forms, which are completed by non-citizens at points of entry and exit. This Tourism Statistics report depicts the statistics on non-citizens entering and leaving the country. The information contained therein provides an up-to-date statistics for policy-makers and all other stakeholders in the Tourism Sector by informing policies, planning and decisions on the development and management of the tourism sector in Botswana, also in monitoring and evaluation for demand and supply considerations within the sector. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship has automated the busiest border posts which handle high volumes of traffic and is therefore able to provide Statistics Botswana with electronic data. These borders account for over 90 percent of all travelers inbound and outbound. Forms from the un-automated borders are captured by Statistics Botswana and merged with those from the automated borders before analysis is done. Botswana citizens are exempt from completing the immigration Entry/Departure forms. The figures on Arrivals and Departures contained in this publication therefore only cover non-citizens, both visitors and temporary residents of Botswana. However, with the increasing demand for statistics on outbound travelers, particularly information on citizens, it will be necessary to collect and compile data on citizens in the future. 1.2 Arrangement of the Report The report is categorized into two parts that discuss Arrivals and Departures. The first part (Chapter 2) discusses the characteristics of tourists or visitors entering the country. These are tourists (overnight) and same-day visitors. The second part (Chapter 3) is focused on all travelers entering and departing the country, regardless of whether they are visitors or non-visitors. Chapter 4 gives definitions of terms used in the report, while Chapter 5 contains appendices on which tables, charts and discussions are based. 1.3 Limitations of the Report The focus of data collected is currently on non-citizens (temporary residents and foreign nationals) only. This report does not provide outbound data on citizens. As a consequence of having both automated and unautomated border posts in operation, it is not possible to calculate the length of stay of visitors even though data on the amount of time (days) granted is captured in the Immigration Entry/Departure forms. This is as a result of people entering the country through an automated border post but departing through an unautomated border post, therefore making it difficult to calculate the actual length of stay as data from automated and un-automated borders cannot be reconciled. Tourism Statistics Annual Report

8 1.4 Data Source and Methodology The data used in the production of this report is administratively sourced. Over 90 percent of the data is electronically captured and provided to Statistics Botswana (SB) by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The Department has managed to automate the busiest points of entry that handle high volumes of travelers. The data is captured into the Passport and Border Control System (PBCS). The remaining 10 percent of the data from the un-automated border entry points is manually captured by Data Processing staff at Statistics Botswana. These two datasets are then merged for processing. Tourist data is collected using Arrival and Departure forms that are filled in by non-citizens at all the gazetted points of entry and exit (land borders and airports). Each form asks questions on personal characteristics of the traveler which include among others, sex, age, country of nationality, country of residence and purpose of entry. By default data is also collected on month of travel, mode of transport and point of entry. Figures are independently rounded, therefore in some cases they may not add to the total. The results and analysis presented in the report follow the guidelines, definitions and classifications recommended by United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC). 8 Tourism Statistics Annual Report 2015

9 CHAPTER 2: TOURISTS This chapter gives information on inbound visitors who came into the country in These visitors are classified into same-day visitors and tourists. Same-day visitors are mostly excursionists who take a trip that does not include an overnight stay at their destination, while tourists (overnight) represents visitors who spend at least a night at the country being visited. The chapter details statistics compiled according to country and region of residence, purpose of visit, mode of travel, month of visit, point of entry as well as the demographic characteristics of the visitor. In compilation of this report, half of transit travelers are regarded as visitors. This is taking into consideration the fact that some of these transit travelers end up having expenditure in the country as they are transiting. This expenditure may be incurred through having to spend a night in the country and/or any other expenditure. As a result, tourist statistics discussed here includes half of transit travelers. The country of residence is used as reference when compiling tourist statistics, as opposed to nationality. Appendix 1 is dedicated to tourists only, gives both overnight tourists as well as same day tourists by country of residence. Percentage distributions at country and region level are also given for total tourists (overnight and same day combined). The country received a total of 1, 660, 202 visitors in 2015, comprising 8.0 percent same-day visitors (132, 588) and 92.0 percent tourists (overnight visitors) (1, 527, 614). As can be seen from Appendix 1, most visitors came from Zimbabwe and South Africa, the two countries respectively contributed 40.4 percent (670, 427) and 33.1 percent (549, 492) of total visitors during the year. 2.1 Tourists by Region of Residence Appendix 2, which gives the number of tourists by Country of Residence and Purpose of Visit, shows that the SADC region accounted for the majority of tourists who visited Botswana in The table shows that for purposes of Visiting Friends & Relatives, tourists from the SADC region accounted for 97.1 percent (429, 665) of tourists entering the country for that purpose. Those who came for Business accounted for 97.2 percent (546, 461) of all those who came for that purpose. With regards to tourists entering the country for the purpose of Holiday/Leisure, those residing in the SADC region accounted for 42.9 percent (110, 888) of all tourists entering the country for that purpose. Tourists residing in the SADC region, who entered Botswana for all purposes of entry in 2015 accounted for 88.6 percent (1, 471, 609) of all tourists (1, 660, 200). It can also be observed from Appendix 2 that Europe is a significant source of Holiday/Leisure tourists, having supplied 32.2 percent (83, 283) of total Holiday/Leisure tourists (258, 558). Overall tourists residing in Europe accounted for 6.2 percent (103, 575) of all tourists (1, 660, 200) entering the country during the year under review. Tourists entering Botswana, with residence in other regions can be observed in Appendix Top Ten Leading Overseas Countries Figure 1, which is based on Table 1 and Appendix 1, presents tourists by type (Same Day and Overnight tourists) during the year under review. Europe dominates the top ten leading overseas countries that supplied tourists to the country during 2015, with six out of the top ten countries. The top ten leading overseas countries together supplied 143, 032 tourists (both overnight and same-day visitors), accounting for 8.6 percent of total tourists. Of these 143, 032 tourists, USA accounted for 28.1 percent (40, 124), and the UK and Germany supplied 17.8 percent (25, 485) and 17.1 percent (24, 423) respectively. Other information on tourists from the top ten leading overseas countries can be viewed on Table 1, Figure 1 and Appendix 1. Tourism Statistics Annual Report

11 2.3 Top Ten Leading SADC Countries Figure 2 shows the ten leading countries in the SADC Sub-continent. These countries accounted for 88.5 percent (1, 470, 012) of total tourists (1, 660, 200) during Amongst the 10 countries, Zimbabwe made a contribution of 45.6 percent (670, 427) followed by South Africa with 37.4 percent (549, 492) of the total tourists. Zambia and Namibia also made significant contributions, with 8.1 percent (119, 213) and 6.5 percent (95, 753) respectively. Other countries can be observed on Table 2 and Figure 2. Zambia shows the highest proportion of same-day visitors at 30.8 percent (36, 713) of total visitors from that country, followed by Namibia at 14.8 percent (14, 217) from the country. The high proportion of same-day visitors may be as a result of cross border trade. The majority of tourists from Zimbabwe came for business purposes with 43.8 percent (293, 559) of total visitors (670, 427); see Appendix 2. There are mainly three categories of tourists; those visiting friends and relatives (VFR); leisure tourists and business travelers. The other tourists category represents those who came for religious activities, sporting activities, medical purposes etc. A proportion of those on transit is also regarded as tourists in compilation of tourism statistics. The country recorded a total of 1, 660, 202 tourists in 2015, with 92.0 percent (1, 527, 614) overnight visitors and 8.0 percent (132, 588) same-day visitors. Most visitors, 33.8 percent (561, 967) came for business purposes, those visiting friends & relatives (VFR) accounted for 26.7 percent ( ) while those who came for holiday/ leisure made 15.6 percent (258, 558) of total tourists, refer to Table 3. 13 2.5 Mode of Travel Table 4 presents tourists by mode of travel, being Air and Road. Air travel is further categorized by major airports while airstrips are aggregated as other. Percentages for type of tourist by airport are calculated as a percentage of the total for individual type of tourist by air, while percentages for type of tourist by Air and Road are calculated as a percentage of total individual type of tourist. Most tourists came by road during 2015, with 92.2 percent (1, 531, 457) having arrived by road while air travel accounted for 7.8 percent (128, 745) of total inbound tourists (Table 4). Maun Airport was the most used airport by holiday/leisure tourists, with 62.4 percent (32, 225) of total holiday air travelers (51, 603) having arrived through this airport. Sir Seretse Khama Airport experienced large volumes of business travelers at 92.2 percent (54, 902) out of total business air travel of 59, 556. Overall, the SSKA was the busiest point of entry among all airports, having accounted for 57.8 percent (74, 412) of all air travel. 14 2.6 Month of Travel Figure 3 indicates that most tourists were recorded in December (195, 566), representing 11.8 percent of total tourists during the year. August and July followed with 10.9 percent (180, 179) and 10.3 percent (170, 855) respectively. This scenario is not at all surprising as most travelers (particularly leisure) tend to take trips during the Christmas holidays. The large volumes recorded for July and August could be attributed to the end of the winter period and beginning of the travel season. The least number of tourists, 91, 025 was recorded during February 2015, representing 5.5 percent of total tourist Arrivals (1, 660, 202) for the reference period.
