1 Site and Situation What makes a city great? Why are some cities better than others? Cities developed for a variety of reasons. Site and situation are important geographic concepts when studying the reasons for growth of cities. Great cities are found where site and situation give them an advantage as compared to other places. A city s site and situation can change over time and affect its growth and success.
2 Site the actual ( ) location of a place absolute and all its physical features (landforms, waterways, climate) What makes a site good? - building Well drained, with stable land for land water Fertile with an adequate supply - Nearby natural resources. - Room to grow
3 There are many different kind of sites in the world and they are grouped into to several categories: a) Harbor sites NATURAL HARBOR -ships are protected -break of bulk center New from Yorkone City, NYof are moved type train to ship) where shipments of goods transportation to another (i.e Alexandria, Egypt, and Istanbul, Turkey EX:

6 b) Island Sites -- good for protection - water access for trade Paris, France Hong Kong, China, Singapore EX:

9 c) Fall Line Site - an imaginary line along the edge of higher land, marked by rapids and waterfalls, that indicates where rivers begin to descend more steeply from a highland region to a lowland one Richmond, VA EX:
10 Richmond, VA became a major city because it is located on the fall line of the James River.
11 d) Confluence Sites - a point at which rivers (streams) combine, or a river (stream) formed by rivers combining - provides opportunities for trade, transportation Pittsburgh, and PA communication Khartoum, Sudan EX:
12 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania became a major city because it is located at the site where three rivers converge (confluence of the Ohio River, the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River).
13 Khartoum, Sudan became a major city because it is located at the site where three rivers converge (confluence of the White Nile and the Nile Rivers).
14 e) Hilltop Sites -- Provide views in all directions good for defense Athens, Greece and Rome, Italy, Jerusalem, EX: Israel

23 Situation the location ( ) of the place in relative relation to other geographic features, regions, resources, and transport routes What makes a situation good? - an area in a central location in a region - an important point along a transportation route - a natural harbor - land where two or more rivers meet.
