4 DAY 01 (FRI) USA/EUROPE Depart this evening on an overnight flight to Europe. ITINERARY DAY 02 (SAT) EUROPE/KILIMANJARO/ARUSHA Connect with your flight to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. On arrival this evening you will be transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Located in the city of Arusha, Tanzania, the Mount Meru Hotel lies on nine acres of lush landscape, surrounded by some of Africa s most breath-taking vistas. The hotel offers 178 rooms with individual airconditioning, mini bar, electronic safes, satellite television, free Wi-Fi, hair dryer and tea and coffee making facilities. The restaurant and lounge open out onto the terrace. There is a swimming pool to cool off in between touring. The adjacent carefully designed golf course is sure to attract bird lovers from all over. Accommodation: Mount Meru Hotel (B) DAY 03 (SUN) ARUSHA/LAKE MANYARA This morning is yours to enjoy at leisure. After lunch depart on your group safari to Lake Manyara Park. Enjoy the late afternoon at leisure. Lake Manyara Wildlife Camp overlooks the Lake Manyara floodplain and only a few minutes from the National Park entry. The camp consists of ten canvas en suite tents and sixteen cottages, each with private balconies overlooking the floodplain. There is a large swimming pool and expansive deck and the main lodge area offers the ding room and a two-story lounge featuring the Hakuna Matata Bar. 5 DAY 04 (MON) LAKE MANYARA/SERENGETI Morning game drive in the park. Lake Manyara National Park is most famed for its tree-climbing lions that may be seen (if you are very lucky) sleeping amongst the branches of acacia trees. The park is situated in the Great Rift Valley where hippos abound along with the excellent bird life as well as elephant and baboon. Enjoy lunch back at the lodge. Continue to the Serengeti National Park through the vast African plains. You will arrive at your lodge late afternoon game viewing en route. Serengeti is derived from the Maasai language and appropriately means "endless plain." The park's 5,700 square miles makes it larger than the state of Connecticut. Altitude varies from 3,120 to 6,070 feet. As you enter the park gate you will take a game drive through the open plains. Nearly 500 species of birds and 35 species of large plains animals can be found in the Serengeti. The park may contain as many as 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebra, 300,000 Grant's gazelle, 250,000 Thomson's gazelle, 120,000 impala, 70,000 topi, 20,000 buffalo, 9,000 eland, 8,000 giraffe, 1,000 lion and 800 elephant. The huge herds of plains game such as wildebeest, zebra and antelope dominate the park while the attendant predators such as lion and cheetah are to be found amongst the many kopjes scattered across the plain. Leopard can often be found draped in the trees along the Seronera River. From December-May wildebeest, zebra, eland and Thomson's gazelle usually concentrate on the treeless short-grass plains in the extreme southeastern Serengeti and western Ngorongoro Conservation Area near Lake Ndutu in search of short grass, which they prefer over the longer dry-stemmed variety. This is the best time to visit the Serengeti. In April and May, the height of the rainy season, a 4wd vehicle is highly recommended. The Kati Kati Explorer Camp is located in the central Serengeti year-round and is the ideal base for exploring the open plains. You will have full camp service with your home comforts. The 10 tents are large, with en suite bathrooms, insect proof windows, comfortable single beds with fresh linens and duvets, private verandas. You will be brought your morning coffee before your morning game drives. Washbasins are placed outside the tents and filled with hot water to freshen up before you begin another day of adventure. Hurricane lamps are used for lighting.

Afternoon tea and a further game drive is followed by iced cold drinks and a delicious dinner. All your meals are excellent and are taken in a separate dining tent.

On your return to the camp after a morning game drive you may have an excellent late breakfast or gourmet picnic lunch when you then may relax on the veranda of your luxurious tent. Afternoon tea and a further game drive is followed by iced cold drinks and a delicious dinner. All your meals are excellent and are taken in a separate dining tent. Ngorongoro Farm House is a small and exclusive lodge facing the Oldeani Volcano, about a ten minute drive from the gate entrance to Ngorongoro Crater. There are 52 cottages built on the style of an old colonial farm offering an atmosphere from a bygone era. The main building, covered with a thatch roof, has a reception, bar, dining area, library and lounge with fireplace. There is also a swimming pool and internet access. Its brilliant positioning on the raised shoulder of a valley provides breathtaking views over a coffee-plantation and onto the eastern wall of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. Accommodation: Tloma Lodge (Full Board) DAY 07 (THU) NGORONGORO CRATER After breakfast at your lodge, descend into the crater for a full-day of game viewing. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor. Return to your lodge late in the day. Enjoy the evening at leisure. Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unflooded, intact caldera in the world. Known as the eighth wonder of the world, its vastness and beauty are truly overwhelming. Ngorongoro Crater itself is but a small portion of the 3,200-square-mile Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a World Heritage site that is characterized by a highland plateau with volcanic mountains as well as several craters, extensive savannah and forests. Altitudes range from 4,430 to 11,800 feet. Ngorongoro Crater is about 12 miles wide and its rim rises 1,200-1,600 feet off of its expansive 102-squaremile floor. The steep descent into the crater along winding roads takes minutes from the crater rim. The crater floor is predominantly grasslands (making game easy to spot) with two swamps fed by streams, and the Lerai Forest. The walls of the crater are lightly forested. Ngorongoro contains possibly the largest permanent concentration of wildlife in Africa, with an estimated average of 30,000 large mammals. In addition, this is one of the best reserves in Africa in which to see black rhino. Large concentrations of wildlife make Ngorongoro Crater their permanent home. Game viewing is good year-round. Because there is a permanent source of fresh water, there's no reason for much of the wildlife to migrate as they must do in the Serengeti. DAY 08 (FRI) NGORONGORO/TARANGIRE Proceed to Tarangire Park where you will enjoy lunch at your lodge before continuing on an afternoon game drive.

During the dry season from June to November, animals concentrate along Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply.

8 DAY 08 (FRI) NGORONGORO/TARANGIRE Proceed to Tarangire Park where you will enjoy lunch at your lodge before continuing on an afternoon game drive. Tarangire is the third largest national park in Tanzania. Majestic baobab trees are an interesting feature of the park, dwarfing all but the elephants feeding beneath them. During the dry season from June to November, animals concentrate along Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply. The area supports a great diversity of wildlife, including giraffe, buffalo, lesser kudu, eland, oryx and zebra. Lion, leopard and cheetahs are also present in the area. Up to 6,000 elephants inhabit Tarangire in the dry season. Lake Burunge Tented Camp, built on the shores of Lake Burunge, is located in the migratory corridor between Tarangire and Lake Manyara. The luxury camp features 20 en suite tents with flush toilets and hot/cold water showers and a spacious private verandah. The camp s main building includes a central lounge and bar dining area with a raised wooden deck. Accommodation: Lake Burunge Tented Camp (Full Board) DAY 09 (SAT) TARANGIRE/KILIMANJARO/NAIROBI/KIGALI Depart this morning by vehicle to Arusha where you will enjoy lunch before continuing to the Kilimanjaro Airport. Board your scheduled inter-africa flight to Nairobi and onward to Kigali, Rwanda. On arrival you will be met and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy the evening at leisure. A tiny landlocked republic in Equatorial Africa, Rwanda lies on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift and the watershed between Africa's two largest river systems: the Nile and the Congo. Often called the "land of a thousand hills", Rwanda is a mountainous country with a moist, temperate year-round climate. Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa. French, English and Kinyarwanda are the most widely spoken languages and the population of about 8 million people is largely Christian with some Muslim and Animist communities.

Kigali has been the capital of Rwanda since 1965.

9 Kigali has been the capital of Rwanda since An attractive city, it spreads over a number of hills and although it saw some difficult times through the genocide in 1994 and as power changed hands subsequently, it now has a pleasant, buoyant air. The main shopping and commercial area is centered around the Hotel Mille Collines, with the government district on the neighboring Kaciyiru hill. The markets, the handicrafts, the Muslim quarter and a new genocide memorial under construction in Gisozi are some of the main places of interest. Hotel des Mille Collines is located in the heart of Kigali s business district and features contemporary accommodations. Accommodation: Hotel des Milles Collines (B, D) Garden View Room DAY 10 (SUN) KIGALI/MUSANZE - VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK Following a leisurely breakfast at the hotel and a short drive through the city, depart with your driver-guide and transfer to your lodge in Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is located about 10 minutes from the Park Headquarters, making it an ideal base for gorilla trekking. The lodge features 30 spacious chalets each with en suite bathroom, fireplace and tea-coffee making machine. The central lounge area includes a bar and dining room, which serves dishes highlighting the farm-fresh produce purchased from the local community. Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Full Board) DAY 11 (MON) MUSANZE - VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK Your day starts with an early morning wake-up (approx 5:30am) and then a transfer (approx 6:15am) to the park gate at Kinigi for your first gorilla visit (6:30am). Here you will meet your tracker and the day will be spent tracking the mountain gorillas.

Volcanoes National Park is home to the mountain gorilla. The 48-square-mile (125-km2) park supports several vegetation zones, from lush bamboo stands to luxuriant mountain forest to Afro-alpine.

10 Volcanoes National Park is home to the mountain gorilla. The 48-square-mile (125-km2) park supports several vegetation zones, from lush bamboo stands to luxuriant mountain forest to Afro-alpine. From 8,500 to 11,000 feet (2,590 to 3,350 m), primary forest is dominated by hagenia trees growing feet (9-18 m) in height. Hagenia have twisted trunks and low branches covered with lichen, out of which epiphytic orchids, moss and ferns often grow. Volcanoes National Park borders both Virunga National Park in the Congo and the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Other wildlife in the park includes the golden monkey (a rare subspecies of blue monkey), black-fronted duiker (very common), bushbuck and buffalo. Over 90 species of birds have been recorded, including spectacular mountain turacos (the Rwenzori turaco is the most common) and forest francolin. Your viewing of the gorillas will be limited to a maximum of only one hour. One must be prepared for a strenuous hike of four to six hours. A small water bottle is a good idea, especially if the trek turns out to be strenuous. There will be some bottles of mineral water in your vehicle for you to take with you. Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Full Board) DAY 12 (TUE) VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK/KIGALI Today you have a choice between a golden monkey trek or experience your second gorilla trek. Option 1 ~ Your viewing of the Golden Monkeys will be limited to a maximum of only one hour. Dwarfed in size and reputation by the Gorillas, Rwanda s golden monkey is well worth discovering. Its attractive pelt and relative accessibility has put it on the endangered list published by the IUCN. These extremely playful and agile primates thrive in the Volcanoes National Park and make for fascinating (but strenuous) viewing. The golden monkey is a subspecies of the blue monkey found only in the bamboo forests of the volcanic mountain chain that forms a part of the boundary between Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC. It s a natural history experience that anyone planning to trek gorillas in Rwanda should consider. It is a perfect option for younger natural history enthusiasts under the age limit of 15 years required to trek gorillas.

Little is presently known about the ecological requirements of the golden monkey, and the subspecies population numbers have never been determined. A visit to the golden monkeys is very different experience from gorilla viewing, The golden monkeys live mainly in the bamboo thickets and are smaller and harder to spot, but extremely rewarding once found as the monkeys react and interact differently; they will keep on playing hide-and-seek much to the delight of the visitors. There is a newly habituated group of about 40 individuals in the Volcanoes National Park that can be visited. It is only during the very last few years that researchers are starting to put together a detailed picture of their lifestyle and routines. The first golden monkey troupe was only habituated in It was previously found also in Nyungwe Forest in southern Rwanda but the only viable population is now found in Volcanoes National Park. Option 2 ~ Experience your second gorilla trek. Following your trek, savor the memories of the morning hike and gorilla encounter with a relaxing afternoon at leisure visiting the farmlands, villages and markets that surround Kinigi and Musanze towns. A walk or drive along these rural roads is where one can really enjoy 'street level culture', with a fascinating blend of farmers, businessmen, bars, and shops. For those interested in a more structured activity, ask your driver about visiting the Iby'Iwachu Cultural Village. Trip Reports: Dear Elena, We had a wonderful trip and everything went very well. We liked the Hotel des Mille Collines. Their pool and dining area is very nice and the food (dinner and especially breakfast) was very good. We liked that the hotel was in a quiet and safe area. The rooms were clean; the beds comfortable... We really liked the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge. The rooms were good and we appreciated the fireplace and warm water bottles. The service was excellent and we loved the food. Although buffet style, they made individual stir fry for dinner, which was fantastic. So was the selections of fruits, tarts, etc. Really all meals were excellent. Tea or coffee was available all the time, which was wonderful. The golden monkey and gorilla treks were amazing. Not anything we will ever forget. In fact I am still dreaming about the gorillas every night. Our guide Sam was very pleasant and knowledgeable and always on time. So all in all, we loved the safari and Rwanda. I call it the Switzerland of Africa. Quite a difference from rural and urban Tanzania, where we have now spent 4 summers working with our students providing veterinary care.
