1 Throughout antiquity, Jordan lay at the heart of the ancient world. Across these biblical landscapes, the armies of the Greeks and the Persians, the Romans and the Crusaders influenced some of the most pivotal moments in the history of the Middle East. This comprehensive journey spans a rich mix of natural and cultural highlights, from Crusader castles and Roman cities, to desert oases and towering dunes. A chance to explore the rich history of the Jordanian capital is followed by a visit to the fortress of Qa lat Al Rabat and the spectacular Greco-Roman remains of Jerash. Travelling down the famous Kings Highway, you then take in the contrasting spectacles of the Crusader castle at Kerak and the beautiful and remote landscapes of the Dana Reserve. Continuing on to the famous Rose Red city of Petra, you ll have time to explore its remarkable rock-cut temples, before heading by 4WD vehicles through the haunting desert landscapes of Wadi Rum and on to Aqaba. After a chance to enjoy the clear, warm waters of the Red Sea, you ll end this adventure amongst the unique saline waters of the Dead Sea and the biblical landscapes of Mount Nebo and Madaba. 3 ITINERARY DAY 1: AMMAN Arrive in Amman and transfer to your hotel. DAY 2: AMMAN - AZRAQ - AMMAN This morning drive out to the desert to visit the desert castles owned by ancient caliphs and at one stage used by Lawrence of Arabia. Return to Amman to enjoy a half-day tour of the city including the Citadel, Temple of Hercules, Ummayad Palace and Roman Theatre. Stroll around Amman's crowded streets, souks and markets and sample some of the Jordan's best street food. (B) DAY 3: AMMAN - AJLOUN - AMMAN Today, drive through olive groves north to Ajloun and Jerash. Ajloun is dominated by the imposing fortress of Qa'lat Al Rabat and nearby Jerash is an excellently preserved Greco-Roman city and is sometimes referred to as the Pompeii of the east. (B) DAY 4: AMMAN - MAKAWIR - DANA NATURE RESERVE Leaving Amman, drive south and join the Kings' Highway, one of the oldest trading routes in the world to Makawir to visit the Bani Hamidah handicraft project. Continue your journey for a guided tour of El Kerak Crusader Castle, built in 1132 by Baldwin of Jerusalem, a Crusader king. An easy climb to the top rewards you with spectacular views of the Jordan Valley. Finally arrive at the Dana Nature Reserve, an unspoilt area of natural beauty. (B,D) DAY 5: DANA NATURE RESERVE With your guide enjoy a walk through Wadi Dana and Wadi Feynan. There is a great diversity of birdlife - over 214 species - Griffon vultures and other birds of prey can often be seen circling overhead. After arriving in the Feynan area, stay the night in the beautiful eco-lodge. (B,L,D)

4 DAY 6: DANA NATURE RESERVE - LITTLE PETRA - PETRA Leaving Dana this morning head first of all for the smaller site of Little Petra with its own siq and tombs, from here take a walk to Petra along an old Bedouin route which brings you to the Monastery. (B) DAY 7: PETRA At your own pace revisit Petra. You may like to walk up to the Monastery to admire the carving and also the views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. (B) DAY 8: PETRA Today you will have a full day to explore Petra alone, perhaps take a walk up to the Higher Place of Sacrifice and then take one of the lesser walked routes down past some remote tombs. (B) DAY 8: PETRA - WADI RUM Enter Wadi Rum by 4WD jeep via the sand dunes to Jebel Karazah, viewing old graffiti, inscriptions and drawings from the 2nd millennium BC. Driving through towering weathered sandstone cliffs arrive at your desert camp. (B,D) DAY 9: WADI RUM - AQABA This morning there is an opportunity to go on a camel trek through the dunes of Wadi Rum. Later on, drive west to the Red Sea town of Aqaba, squeezed onto Jordan's only stretch of coastline at the southern tip of the country (about 65 km). (B)

5 DAY 10: AQABA Aqaba, situated on the shores of the crystal-clear Red Sea, is a perfect place to relax on the beach. (B) DAY 11: AQABA - DEAD SEA After a relaxing morning drive north to your hotel by the Dead Sea. Surrounded by barren mountains, the Dead Sea is the lowest exposed point on the Earth's surface and lies at the bottom of a natural depression that reaches 409m below sea level. The water is rich in mineral salts and contains so much sodium that it makes it impossible for plant and animal life to live here but it is ideal for spas and medical treatments. (B) DAY 12: DEAD SEA Today you can take a full day excursion south to Madaba and Mount Nebo. Madaba is a mosiac-filled city. The most important mosaic is in the Greek Orthodox Church of St George, showing a map of the holy land including the entire region from Jordan and Palestine in the north, to Egypt in the south, the mosaic dates from the 6th century. Mount Nebo is one of the reputed sites of the tomb of Moses. The summit of this lonely, wind-swept mountain commands spectacular views over the Dead Sea to the West Bank and Jerusalem and you can see the springs where Moses smote the ground to bring forth water. Alternatively, simply relax at your hotel, float in the salty waters and take a mud bath. (B) DAY 13: AMMAN Transfer to Amman airport for your return flight. (B)

6 ACCOMMODATION AMMAN HISHAM HOTEL Hisham is a four star boutique hotel, conveniently located in Amman s business and diplomatic district, within walking distance of the old city and its historic attractions, and 30 minutes from the international airport. The rooms are stylish and comfortable and include satellite flat screen TV, mini-bar, telephone and free internet access. The hotel offers a selection of dining options, including a popular garden pub and a rooftop restaurant/bar with views of the capital. AQABA MOVENPICK RESORT TALA BAY The Movenpick Resort & Spa in Tala Bay is a five star hotel on the southern shores of the Red Sea. With three restaurants including Italian and local cuisine, six bars and other facilities including many swimming pools, and a spa, the property is stylish, luxurious, and perfect for soaking up year-round sun. Just 15 minutes from Aquaba and 20 minutes from King Hussein Airport, it's easily accessible. The spacious rooms are well furnished, with wifi, air conditioning and a TV. DANA NATURE RESERVE DANA GUESTHOUSE Perched on the edge of Wadi Dana, this beautifully styled guesthouse offers breathtaking views of the reserve, comfortable accommodation, traditional Arabic food, and friendly service. The stone building contains nine comfortably furnished bedrooms, most with private terraces. Noted for its local food and warm welcome, the guesthouse actively helps to support the Nature Reserve. There is a restaurant at Dana Guesthouse serving home-made traditional local meals. FEYNAN ECO LODGE In the middle of the mountainous, desert landscape of Wadi Feynan and the Dana Biosphere Reserve lies the Feynan Eco Lodge. Lit by candlelight with serene court yards and terraces on which to relax and watch the sun set this is one of the most unique eco-experiences in Jordan. Set up by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in partnership with Eco Hotels this 26 roomed lodge is solar powered and offers economic opportunities for the local inhabitants as well as raises funds to protect the local environment. The rooms all have private balconies and views over Wadi Feynan and the restaurant provides three meals a day using local herbs, preserves, homemade jams and teas from the Dana Biosphere. DEAD SEA
