Land only passengers can arrive at the hotel any time today, the leader may not be around today. *Hotel Arien Plaza or Shodlik Hotel or similar, Comfortable Hotel* Day 2 We have a relaxed morning after the late arrival last night. We later start our sightseeing of this Central Asian capital. This will include visiting Independence Square flanked by public buildings and water fountains and also the Old City with its mausoleums and bazaar. Tashkent was largely destroyed by earthquakes in the 60's and was rebuilt in true Soviet style with pleasant leafy boulevards and lots of fountains to keep the heat down in summer. There are some very interesting museums as well as mosques. *Hotel Arien Plaza or Shodlik Hotel or similar, Comfortable Hotel*

Day 3 We catch the morning fast train to Samarkand arriving mid-morning. We spend the rest of today and tomorrow morning exploring Samarkand. Samarkand is steeped in history, dating back 2,500 years and impacted by such figures as Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Tamerlane, who made it the capital of his empire in the 14th Century. Its central position on the Silk Road meant that it was an important stop on the route from Istanbul to Peking (now Beijing). At its heart is the grand Registan Square flanked by the three grand madrasahs of Ulughbeg (15th C), Sherdor (17th C) and Tilya Qori (17th C). Over the next day and a half we visit the grand square as well as the Gur Emir Mausoleum, burial place of Tamerlane, his sons and his grandson, Ulughbek. The Ulugbek Observatory built in 1420 by Tamerlane s grandson who was not just a ruler but also a well-known astronomer. We move on to the oversized Bibi Khanum Mosque and Shakhi Zinda the Living King necropolis with its series of mausoleums dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Our final visit is to the exotic Siab Bazaar with its fresh and dried fruit and nuts and other local food produce. The leader may shift the order the sites are visited. *Dilshoda Hotel or Malika Prime Hotel or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 4 This morning we continue our visit of Samarkands many sites. In the afternoon we drive to Bukhara, the best preserved of the Silk Road cities we visit. *Kavsar Plaza or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 5 We spend two full days exploring Bukhara. The best preserved mediaeval city in Central Asia, this UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back over 2,000 years. Our city tour takes us to the Lyabi Khauz complex, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, this is the site of the oldest pool of its kind in Central Asia. The pool is surrounded by madrasahs and a khanaka (lodging house for travelling Sufis) including the largest madrasah in Bukhara, the 15th century Kukeldash Madrasah. We continue on to the Poi-Kalyan religious complex with its 48m Kalyan minaret dating back to the 12th century and the symbol of Bukhara; the large Kalyan Mosque (15th century) with its galleries topped by 288 domes; and the only active madrasah in the city, Bukhara Miri-Arab (16th century). Next is the Samanid Mausoleum, the oldest piece of Islamic architecture in Central Asia and burial site of the 10th Century Emir, Ismail Samani. Finally we visit the Ark, a 5th century citadel and the oldest building in Bukhara. *Kavsar Plaza or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 6 We continue our exploration of the sites of Bukhara. Later this afternoon we will catch the fast train back to Tashkent arriving in the capital in the evening. The train leaves Bukhara at 15:52 and arrives in Tashkent at 19:40. *Hotel Arien Plaza or Shodlik Hotel or similar, Comfortable Hotel * Day 7 We spend the morning visiting parts of Tashkent we'd missed on the first day. After lunch we head back to the train station to catch the train to Almaty in Kazakhstan. This is one of those epic train rides which Central Asia does so well. Since 2017 a new train service has cut the duration to 17hrs departing Tashkent around 15:00h and arriving in Almaty the following morning around 09:30h. Travelling on trains through this region is a great way of not only covering large distances (almost 1000kms in this case) but also of seeing the change in the landscape and mingling with locals. *Overnight train* * *

Day 8 Arriving early we have the whole day to explore Almaty with its backdrop of the Tien Shan mountains. With leafy streets and café culture, the former Kazakh capital has a distinctly European feel. We visit a number of sites such Zhenkov Cathedral, made entirely of wood and without the use of nails. *Kazzhol Hotel or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 9 We spend today exploring the countryside around Almaty. We first head for Issyk Lake (not to be confused with Issyk Kul Lake in Kyrgyzstan which we visit later on the trip). Set amidst thick forests and pastures with wild flowers, this alpine lake is located at 1,760m above sea level within the Issyk Gorge. From here we continue to Turgen Gorge known for its beautiful natural scenery and waterfalls, some as tall as 40m. After a day spent exploring part of the Ile-Alatau region we return to Almaty for the night. *Kazzhol Hotel or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 10 Heading for the border we soon find ourselves in our third and final country: Kyrgyzstan. The mountainous country was completely closed to outsiders during the Soviet Union era but has since opened up to flaunt its spectacular natural beauty and lingering nomadic culture. Our first stop, however, is Kyrgyzstan s modern capital city, Bishkek. This afternoon we spend some time visiting the city s main sites taking in Ala Too Square, Parliament House, the White House, the change of the guard, the Lenin Statue and the Manas Monument. *Hotel Asia Mountains 1 or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 11 We continue our journey through the Tien Shan Mountains and head towards Issyk Kul Lake. The second largest salt lake in the world, after the Caspian Sea (and fast becoming the largest as the Caspian Sea recedes), it measures 70km by 180km and is almost 700m at its deepest point. Its name translates as Hot Lake and was given as, even in the depths of winter and despite being just above 1,600m, it never freezes. The area around the lake is a mixture of forest and meadow with a backdrop of towering mountains and glaciers. We drive along the southern shore of Issyk Kul before arriving at Jety Oguz Gorge where we will spend the night in a traditional yurt. Yurts are semi-permanent tents used by many nomadic people of Central Asia. The camp we stay at is made up of 6 sleeping yurts (each accommodating 4 to 5 people of the same gender) and one communal/dining yurt. There is a shower and two flush-toilets but hot water for washing has to be requested specifically. There is also a generator for electricity for 3 hours in the evening. Spending a night in a yurt camp is a fantastic experience and a small insight into a way of life which has gone on for centuries. *Djety Oguz or similar, Yurt Camp * Day 12 Jety Oguz translates as the Valley of Seven Bulls named after the distinct seven red-coloured rocks found in the gorge. We can learn about the local legends behind the name as we go on a 3 to 4-hour hike through the gorge, either walking along the river or going to a nearby waterfall. We should have the option of attending a Golden eagle hunting demonstration before moving on (this depends on whether the Golden eagle hunter is available). From here it s a relatively short drive to the town of Karakol on the eastern side of Issyk Kul. A ski resort in winter, Karakol is a quaint town of cottages and shady avenues. We visit the Dungan Mosque, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Victory Park as part of a short tour. Tonight we enjoy a home cooked meal at a local Uygur or Dungan family. *Green Yard Hotel or similar, standard Hotel*

Day 13 We start with a visit of the Przhevalsky Museum dedicated to the travels and geographical studies of Russian scientist and geographer Nicolay Przhevalsky whose expeditions explored much of Central and East Asia. We then continue around the lake along the north shore, passing Scythian burial mounds, towards Cholpon Ata. We explore the nearby petroglyphs which are between 4,000 and 1,400 years old. The rest of the day is spent relaxing on the beach or wandering around town. There is also the option of doing a boat trip. *Karven Club Resort or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 14 We leave the lake behind and head toward the capital Bishkek. En route we cross the Boom Gorge. Boom ominously means evil spirit and early travellers, in the 19th Century found the journey arduous and fraught with setbacks. Our next stop is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Burama Tower, an 11th century minaret and the first of its kind in Central Asia. We eventually arrive back in Bishkek for our final night. *Asia Mountains 1 Hotel or similar, Standard Hotel* Day 15 Bishkek The trip ends this morning in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Those on the group flights will be transferred to the airport for their flight back to London arriving later today.

Additional Information Notes for Kazakhstan The vast steppes of Kazakhstan provide a beautiful and awe-inspiring backdrop to your journey through Central Asia. A colossal country with a wealth of oil reserves and natural resources, the country's largest city of Almaty is one of the most developed and modern cities in Central Asia. With a welcoming rural community and home to some interesting cultures and traditions, a journey through Kazakhstan is sure to throw up some fabulous surprises! Citizens of the UK, Australia, USA, and most EU countries will not need a visa to enter Kazakhstan as a tourist for up to 15 days. Citizens of Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark and Portugal and various other EU countries will need to obtain a visa, and this must be obtained in advance from a Kazakh diplomatic mission. Citizens of other countries should check whether a visa is required - if so this will need to be obtained in advance. Notes for Kyrgyzstan Kyrgyzstan is a spectacularly scenic country in the heart of the Tian Shan mountains. Over 90% of the country is unspoiled mountainous countryside, making it the perfect place for trekking and horse riding. The serene lakes of Song Köl and Issyk Köl are some of the loveliest and most peaceful spots in Asia, surrounded by lush pastures favoured by herders. The valleys of Jeti Oguz, Chong Kemin, Ala Archa and Altyn Arashan are equally stunning and perfect places to explore the phenomenal countryside. Kyrgyzstan is a welcoming country where many people still live a nomadic or semi-nomadic way of life, what Kyrgyzstan lacks in settled history it makes up for in a wealth of traditions and is perfect for outdoor exploration and wild camping. Citizens of the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and most EU countries will not need a visa to enter Kyrgyzstan as a tourist for up to 60 days. Please note that citizens of Bulgaria, Romania and South Africa will need a visa. Citizens of other countries should check with the relevant consulates as to whether a visa is required. If a visa is required, you will be able to obtain it on arrival at the border the cost will depend on nationality. A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers coming from areas with risk of yellow fever transmission. Notes for Uzbekistan

Famous for its incredible historical cities; delightful Uzbekistan is the land of the great Khanates and Sultanates - the kingdoms that controlled the Silk Road of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. Once home of the mighty warlore Timur, Samarkand's highlight is the great Registan Square, surrounded with grand madrassah. Bukhara perfectly captures the atmosphere of Central Asia before the Russian domination, and has many spectacular buildings such as the Ark Fortress. Khiva is the best preserved Khanate. Its long and bloody history is fascinating, and the walls that used to provide sanctuary for Silk Road travellers are as intact as the old town inside. Citizens of all countries (except CIS countries) will need a visa to enter Uzbekistan for up to 30 days. In many cases, you will need a Letter of Invitation from an Uzbek agent in order to make the visa application, and you must obtain the visa in advance. You cannot obtain the visa at the border in any circumstance. Firstly you will need to apply for the Letter of Invitation through you trip operator - they will contact you regarding additional information that may be needed for this application. These can take several weeks to issue, and will be ed to you once they are ready. You will need to specify at which Uzbek embassy you intend to make your visa application at. There are some notable exceptions to the requirement for a Letter of Invitation citizens of the UK, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Belgium, Austria, Japan, Malaysia and Latvia will not require a Letter of Invitation to make a visa application at the Uzbek Embassy in their own country. Please note that Uzbekistan Letters of Invitation are typically issued once a day to the complete group of people that happen to have applied on the same day through the same agent addressed to the same consulate; as such your name, nationality and passport number will appear on a list on the Letter of Invitation alongside other tourists who may be on your trip or travelling with other companies, and this list will be shared with everyone on it. As this is a standard practice of the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we do not have any control over this and cannot get around it; if you view this as an unacceptable breach of privacy, then you will be unable to apply for the Letter of Invitation and will not be able to travel to Uzbekistan. After your Letter of Invitation has been issued, you can use this to apply for the visa in advance at the Uzbek Embassy specified on your Letter of Invitation. Please note that you will only be able to apply at the embassy that you have previously specified, and your Letter of Invitation will not be valid for any other Uzbek Embassy. If you are joining the trip in Tashkent or are on an Eastbound trip, you will need to obtain your visa in advance of travel. If you are travelling on a Westbound trip, many travellers choose to obtain their visa in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Please note that the visa is only valid for a period of 3 months from the date of issue. If you are asked to provide a host in Uzbekistan on your visa form, please use the details of the Uzbek agent that issued your Letter of Invitation (this will be printed on the letter). Please note that as of 2014 all medications containing tramadol, codeine, temazepam, morphine, opiates or any containing similar constituent components have been made illegal in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This includes many over-the-counter medicines that are commonly available elsewhere, such as Nurofen! Please see here for more information - It is very important that you do not bring any medications such as this - they will treat this as though you were bringing illegal narcotics into the country. They are very strict about this, and it does not matter if you are only transiting through, and it makes no difference if you have a prescription or a doctor's note - please do not bring these medications to Central Asia under any circumstance, as the customs agents know exactly what they are looking for and the consequences could be huge, not only for yourself but for the tour leaders, for our future operation in the region and especially for our local agents and guides. Please note that we cannot take anyone on these trips who refuses to dispose of such medicines or refuses to co-operate with the tour leaders if they need to inspect any personal medicines - thank you for your understanding in this matter. If you have any prescription medications that do not come under the above list, please bring the prescription along and declare the medicines on any customs declaration forms throughout your trip.

Important Notes The routes, activities and places visited as described in these trip notes are intentions and are meant as a rough guide only. These trip notes have been compiled to help you prepare for your journey once you have booked. They include the full itinerary and dates, and information about kit lists, meeting hotels, insurance, vaccinations, visas, and other information that will help you get ready for your trip. These notes are updated regularly, so please ensure you have an up-to-date version of these trip notes. The planned route and itinerary is the intention, but exact night stops and inclusions cannot be guaranteed. It occasionally happens that there must be a change to our planned itinerary - this may be for a variety of reasons, such as climatic, road or bureaucratic conditions. By their very nature, adventure travel needs to be approached flexibly and some regions can be unpredictable. Some Imaginative Traveller journeys go through off the beaten track areas, which often have poor infrastructure and less stringent safety standards than we are used to at home. Our Groups Our groups are made up of people from around the world and are usually an interesting mix of nationalities and ages. On average there is a pretty even split, males to females and between solo travellers, couples and small groups of friends. We believe that adventure travel should be open to as many people as possible and so although some trips have a minimum age limit, as long as you are fit, healthy and passionate about travel, we are happy to take you. One of the highlights of group travel is the camaraderie and friendships that are formed along the way, and as well as the variety of people that you will meet. The maximum group size depends on the operator and the style of transport, but will usually be a maximum of or up to on our overland journeys. Accommodation Imaginative Traveller trips are designed for shared accommodation, whether staying in hotels, hostels, homestays or campsites, and therefore do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers will share with people of the same sex for the duration of the trip and those that book together will usually be able to share accommodation. The type, variety and standard of accommodation will vary greatly depending on what options are available in the region you are travelling; hotels can vary from very basic rooms without electricity or running water to high standard hotels with good facilities! Generally in hotels most rooms will be twin-share. Hostels, gers and yurts are nearly always multi-share. Many trips will feature a stay in a local homestay or community tourism initiative, allowing us to experience a slice of local life in the areas we travel through. On our overland trips, we will sometimes camp in campsites ranging from rather basic or even wild camps to those with excellent facilities, including swimming pools, restaurants and bars. Dietary Requirements If you have any dietary requirements please tell us at the time of booking and also remind your leader at your welcome meeting. Our crew will try to cater for any particular dietary requirement or food intolerance whenever possible. Health You need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully in our trips. When selecting your trip

please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assessed your ability to cope with the style of travel on that trip. We are always happy to give extra advice if you have additional concerns. Please note that if, in the opinion of our leader, you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, Imaginative Traveller or our partner operators reserve the right to exclude you from all or part of the trip. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information prior to travel, particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition. We also advise you to declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your travel insurers upon purchase. Altitude Imaginative Traveller offers some trips that travel to above 2,800m altitude above sea level - it is imperative at high altitudes to drink lots of water to stay hydrated, be careful not to get burned by the sun, and try not to exert yourself too much. Some pre-existing medical conditions are known to severely worsen at high altitude and be difficult to adequately treat on the ground, leading to more serious consequences. It is imperative that you discuss your pre-existing medical condition/s with your doctor. We understand certain medications are reported to aid acclimatising to high altitude; please discuss these options with your doctor. Yellow Fever A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate - please see each country's note above for details. It's also quite common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate on your arrival back home. It is your responsibility to check with your doctor well in advance of leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting. Malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases Some areas we travel to have the risk of contracting malaria. If this applies to your trip, please get expert advice before travelling about types of malaria pills and take them as instructed. Recommended types do change from time to time and from area to area. Consult your GP / travel clinic for the most up-to-date requirements and to find the right option for you. If advised by your doctor to take a course of anti-malarial tablets, please complete the course as instructed as malaria can often manifest itself upon your return home if the course is not followed. Other mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue Fever, Chikungunya and Zika are continuing to spread and becoming a bigger problem around the world. Bite prevention is vital to avoid contracting any of these diseases as there are no vaccines or specific treatments available. Health professionals have issued warnings for pregnant women travelling to areas affected by the Zika virus. The mosquito usually bites between the hours of dusk and dawn and so covering up by wearing long-legged and long-sleeved clothing, preferably light coloured and buttoned at the wrists, can help. Do not sleep without closing windows, use a mosquito net where possibly and use mosquito repellent applied directly to your skin or soaked into your clothing. Vaccinations Recommended vaccinations and other health protection vary according to different regions and recent bulletins issued by health authorities. It is essential to get the latest advice on the region(s) you are planning to travel in so please check with either your doctor or travel clinic in good time before you travel. We also recommend you check out any specific health advice for the country you are travelling to either via your GP or the following websites: or In the UK, we have been working with Nomad Travel for many years and their website has comprehensive,

up-to-date vaccination and health information. You will receive a 10% discount off all vaccinations given at Nomad Travel clinics. Activities Included activities are listed in the day-to-day itinerary, all other activities are optional and at your own expense. If you choose not to participate in the included activities on this itinerary, the cost will not necessarily be refunded; this is something you will need to check with your leader. A selection of optional activities is listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This list is designed to be a helpful guide as to what is commonly available in each location, and is neither an exhaustive list, a guarantee that the activity is available, or an endorsement or recommendation. Please note that certain activities may not be available on your particular visit if they are overbooked, underbooked, out of season, or for any other reason - the list of activities is made according to our latest information and in the best faith, but please be aware that things may change between our last visit and your arrival. Please also note that it may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, and it is recommended to give yourself extra time in your joining or ending city if you would like to participate in some optional activities there. If you do any optional activities, you do so at your own risk and it must be clearly understood that your participation is your own decision and does not form part of your contract with Dragoman. You may be required to sign/complete a waiver form or optional activity form for some optional activities. Insurance It is a condition of booking that you have comprehensive travel insurance. Without evidence of valid travel insurance you will not be allowed to start the trip. This can be arranged by Imaginative Traveller through our website or by contacting our team of travel consultants. If you prefer to arrange your insurance independently, it should have a minimum medical (including repatriation) cover of 2,000,000. We recommend that any policy also has a minimum level of cover for Personal Liability of 2,000,000 and for Cancellation and Curtailment of 5,000. Cover for loss of baggage, personal effects, money and other inclusions are down to personal choice although please bear in mind that personal effects are more likely to go missing whilst travelling and you should ensure that your policy is adequate to cover the value of your personal effects e.g. cameras, tablets, phones etc. Please note that Imaginative Traveller and our partner operators are not responsible for your personal effects and are not insured for their loss. If you prefer to arrange your insurance independently, it should cover you for any activities that you may wish to participate in, such as white-water rafting, trekking, horse-riding, etc. and the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Company must be experienced in handling situations in developing countries if applicable (e.g. they have the ability to arrange repatriation from remote areas such as the Sahara or trekking in the Andes). If you are travelling to high altitude (such as embarking on a trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro), please make sure that this is also covered. Please double check if you have annual travel and/or credit card policies to ensure they have the cover you require, as many of these policies are not suitable with adventure travel to remote areas. Many credit card medical insurance policies are not valid for travelling outside your country of residence or outside the EU. Please also check the age limits on any policy you wish to take out and make sure that you thoroughly inform the insurance company of any pre-existing conditions. Passports Check that your passport will still be valid for 6 months after the end of the trip - this is important as some countries WILL refuse entry to anyone whose passport is due to expire. A temporary or emergency passport is not valid on our trips. You will need to provide us with your passport details prior to departing for you trip. If you change your passport please remember to inform us.
