Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance (EOTA)
A bit of history Created in 2001 the SBPATV Club had the vision and the mission to control all terrain vehicle use in a trail system rather than see quads run amok throughout the region. Things did not happen as quickly as they could have but in June 2010 with the co-operation of Bruce County, town of South Bruce Peninsula and the Provincial government we cut the ribbon on the Boat Lake trail running from Sauble Beach to Wiarton. In June of 2011 with the co-operation of Grey County, the town of Georgian Bluffs and a renewed commitment from South Bruce Peninsula we were able to add the Grey County side of our trail system. The entire loop is now over 150 kilometres, situated between Georgian Bay on the east, Lake Huron on the west, Colpoy's Bay and Wiarton on the north and Hwy 21 on the south gave us the addition of the "Kemble Mountain" trail while 2013 introduced the"deer Run" trail and the extension of "Willies Way" connecting Clavering to Wiarton. Our trail development team is always looking for new off road opportunities and are sure that the best is yet to come.
Partnering with the community Our SBPATV membership + program is now underway. Local businesses are being approached to offer incentive deals exclusively to SBPATV club members. First to the plate is Sauble Motorsports / ATV depot offering 10% off regular priced parts and accessories or 15% if you purchased your ATV from them. It s all about relationships. Initially we were not the most loved members of the community. We can now claim positive alliances with all of our stake holders; the town of Georgian Bluffs, town of South Bruce Peninsula, Grey County, Bruce County, and the M.N.R.
Partnering with the community Since 2010 the SBPATV trail network has grown from 47km to over 160km of trail, much of it multi-use offering a community benefit to joggers, dog walkers, cross-country skiers, cyclists and many other outdoor enthusiasts. In 2012, our club spent several days clearing out the Rankin River from the damages of the 2003 ice storm which had left it totally unnavigable. SBPATV club used personal ATVs and their winches to clear the river of debris from the storm. Tree clearing expertise was also provided by club members. In 2013 we funded and repaired the Georgian Bluffs Rail Trail Bridge between Concession 10 and 15 in Georgian Bluffs and returned in 2014 to finish off the railings. Summer of 2014 we co-ordinated a major resurfacing of the Park Head bridge on the South Bruce Peninsula multi use trail. A partnership with our friends at the Sauble Sno Riders for their physical and financial help on this project made it possible.
Giving Back to the Community We have been multi-year contributors to the Grey Sauble Conservation Foundation We are a member of the Sauble Beach Chamber of Commerce Our 2013 and 14 End of Summer rides have donated all contributions to the Wiarton Salvation Army sending kids who would otherwise be unable to attend summer camp Our 2012 Ride contributions went to the Wiarton Optimists to support the building of the basketball park in Jimmy Brown park Proceeds from our 2014 season allowed us to contribute to the Wiarton Food Bank
Supporting our Members SBPATV Club is pro-active in ensuring proper training and development of our members and trails. 7 Members are trained on the proper use of chainsaw equipment Partnership with Bruce County for responsible trail design, building and development
How our money is spent SBPATV Funds Operating Costs 8% Growth and Development Fund 34% EOTA Permits 18% Trail Building and Repair 30% Donations to Community 5% EOTA Insurance 5%
How riders contribute to the local economy In 2012, almost 15,000 Canadian visitors participated in ATVing while on a trip in Region 7 (Sault Ste. Marie). These visitors spent about $115 K 14,492 Person Visits and $114,726 spending Source: Statistics Canada s Travel Survey of the Residents of Canada 2012 ATV tourism is estimated to be worth $3.3 billion to the province. The Harper Government is committed to expanding and improving these recreational trails right here in Norfolk County, Haldimand-Norfolk member of parliament Diane Finley said in a press release. By investing in trail infrastructure, our government is encouraging job creation, linking communities and increasing recreational opportunities for all Canadians. I m proud that our government is continuing to support economic growth while ensuring that small communities like ours remain among the best in the world to live. ( )
How riders contribute to the local economy -- He said ATV tourism is a large and growing industry. The Haliburton Chamber of Commerce conducted a study that showed the industry is worth $55 million a year to that community. Food, gas, lodging, groceries... it s a pretty big impact, he said. There have been some concerns raised about the idea, he admitted, but once they present the facts, people have begun to accept the idea. A lot of people think that we are talking about unlicensed, uninsured riders, but if you want to ride in town, you have to have a licence. You have to be insured. You have to be eligible to drive, he said. --
How riders contribute to the local economy These enthusiasts come from a typically higher disposable income bracket and they come fully licensed and prepared to spend money right here in our community, he continued.
ATV s Making Headlines and Headway Big News for all 2 up and Side by Side Riders! Effective July 1, Ontario has extended the definition of an ATV to include 2 ups and Side by Sides 2-ups allow a rider to ride behind the driver. They must have a fixed seat and stirrups or footholds. Side by sides allow passenger and rider to ride beside each other, strapped in with harnesses. Now families can enjoy the trails together!
ATV s Making Headlines and Headway According to local retailers: ATV s are selling 2:1 to snowmobiles This is due to their growing popularity, multi-season and multi-purpose use.
About SBPATV Club We are members of the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance which gives us a great voice with the Federal and Provincial Governments. The EOTA also covers our general liability insurance. We are operated by a board of directors and supported by a group of volunteers who keep the trails maintained, monitored and patrolled. We meet monthly at the Sauble Beach Community Centre and have ongoing projects year round. Contact us at info@sbpatvclub.ca to let us know how you can help.
