Four out of five European* consumers wish to buy products having less environmental impact, provided that they are properly certified by an independent organisation. In textile goods, products have to meet a demand : Studies have shown that the first choice remains in the bedding area, for the comfort and well being. Ethical criteria will make a difference and may reconcile our individual and consumer behaviours. With only a modest 5% market share for EU Eco-labelled products in the European Union, the savings compared to typically performing versions would be substantial: The electricity use avoided would represent the consumption of 3.5 million European households per year. The CO2 saved would be equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 1 million European consumers. Thanks to the reduction of hazardous substances in eco-labelled products formulations, the pollution of more than 12,000 billion litres of freshwater could be avoided every year. Emissions of 17,500 tonnes of nitrogen and sulphur oxides and volatile organic compounds could be avoided per year, reducing the corresponding risks for health and the environment due to air pollution and acidification.
