2 At Backwell School we want every young person to be safe, happy, challenged and stimulated so that they can achieve the best in all they do. This ethos is at the very heart of the varied and exciting activities we offer the students during Enrichment Week. Year 7 Enrichment Week is exceptionally exciting as we are fortunate to be able to offer the students places on a rich variety of residential and non residential trips in the UK. At this time of year we are asked to confirm bookings for nearly three hundred students by paying large holding deposits to the companies that we work with. This means asking you to make a decision regarding the Enrichment choices for June fully aware that the Year 7s are only just settling in with us. That being said, the trips are all excellent and experience suggests that wherever they go they students will have a fantastic and unforgettable time. The number of places available for each trip is agreed and set with the travel organisers. Some trips are exceedingly popular and there will inevitably be disappointment. Please discuss the options carefully with your child before agreeing what is best for them. We would encourage you to discuss fully a second and third option with your child. Although we understand that the students want to travel with their friends it is very important that this is not the main criteria for choosing a trip. One of the aims of Enrichment Week is to mix and share experiences with students from across the year group and of course by June friendship groups will have grown considerably. Students will be offered a place on a trip, trying to accommodate their first choice. If the trip is over subscribed names will be selected in no particular order and without prejudice to fill the number of places available on each trip. All students who are not allocated their first choice will be offered an alternative based upon their second and third choices. These students will automatically be placed on the waiting list for their first choice. Parents will be contacted if an opportunity arises during the year for students to swap trips. Places are not offered on a first come first served basis, however late applications will probably be disappointed. Parents will receive notification of the trip being offered in writing and it will be made available on ParentPay for a non-refundable deposit to be paid. Please check you have access to ParentPay before the deposit is required. If you have difficulty accessing ParentPay please contact the Finance department on Alternately telephone the Enrichment Team to make a card payment over the phone: Tel : Photographs from previous trips are available on the school website: - click on the link to the trip.
3 HOW TO BOOK At the back of the booklet there is a cut out My Choices page. Complete the My Choices page indicating first, second and third choice. (If the choice is Base Backwell you need only tick the one box) Return the completed My Choices to the Student Services office no later than FRIDAY 6 OCTOBER You will receive notification of the trip being offered by letter. This notification will include a copy of the Terms and Conditions and a Student Essential Information form relating to the trip The trip will also be made available on your Parentpay account Pay the initial deposit via Parentpay. Alternatively you can telephone the Student Services office and make a card payment over the phone The payment deadline for your initial deposit is THURSDAY 19 OCTOBER. If the deposit is not received by this date, the place may be offered to another student Complete and return the Terms and Conditions, the Student Information form and the Behaviour Agreement to the Student Services office by THURSDAY 19 OCTOBER Your child's place on the trip is not secure until the deposit has been paid and the documents requested have been returned to Student Services Payment: Non payment of deposits/instalments may lead to a student being withdrawn from a trip. Full refunds will not be given. Insurance: All trips off-site will be covered by the school trips insurance. For full details please contact the school.
4 DEPOSITS and CANCELLATIONS Deposits for all trips are non refundable. This includes the initial deposit and any interim deposits. Deposits are set by the travel companies to protect the price for the students remaining on a trip if someone were to drop out. The exception when a deposit might be refunded is: Another student is found to replace your child on the trip and therefore the numbers booked on the trip are not altered from the original booking. Cancellations information regarding cancellation charges will be contained in the letter offering your child a place on their chosen trip. These charges are set by the travel companies and will not be waivered. BEHAVIOUR Year after year Backwell School is very proud of the positive reports we receive from the companies with which we work. The behaviour of our students is exemplary and Enrichment Week is arranged in total confidence that this behaviour will continue. Taking students away on trips places extra responsibility on the staff concerned and they must be assured that the students will not represent either a risk to themselves or to other students. Student behaviour will be monitored and their behaviour in lessons and general behaviour around school will be a vital factor in determining whether they are allowed to attend the trip. We have a detailed written log in school of all incidents of poor or inappropriate behaviour and we will be using this to help decide if anyone should not attend a trip. At Backwell School we offer these amazing trips to all the students however if your child is removed from a trip due to concerns related to behaviour the deposit and any cancellation charges incurred at that point will not be refunded. If a students is removed whilst on a trip you may be asked to collect your child and any costs incurred will be the responsibility of the parent/ carer FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE If your family is eligible for Pupil Premium funding or free school meals, you may apply for financial assistance towards the cost of the trips. Please note that Pupil Premium funding cannot be used for deposits. If your family is in receipt of Child Tax Credit you may also apply for financial assistance under exceptional circumstances. To do this complete the form found on the school website. form2016. All Financial Assistance must be applied for by Thursday 19 October, once the places have been allocated. Financial Assistance cannot be used to pay for deposits.

6 Bush Camp (Yr7 only) Bush Camp is an outdoor adventure where you will get very wet, very muddy and be challenged by the rich variety of activities that the Outpost instructors have waiting for you. If you want to experience life in the wild this is the trip for you. You will camp in huge 10 person tents beside a lake in the beautiful Quantock hills. Food, which is good and plentiful, might be eaten in the warm wooden barn on site or it might be in the woods or even as a picnic by a river. The program is diverse and fun every day. You will be raft building or taking part in Tarzan Rescue, survival and bush craft skills, air rifle shooting, archery, the Wall of Death, and Escape from Alcatraz. Because the site is right in the middle of the country side there will be a map and compass lesson when you will use your orientation skills to find your way to a local farm. Evenings will be spent under the stars beside a giant camp fire toasting marshmallows or playing games in a nearby meadow. The coach journey only takes an hour but when you arrive you will feel like you are a million miles away from anywhere. By lunch time on the Monday you will be ready to let the fun begin and learn about life in the wild. Whilst you settle into camp you can explore and discover all the quirks of the eco Bush Camp and see who will be the first to brave the unique showers. For more information about the camp visit
