2 The Attenborough moment... Relaxing after lunch we met some polar polar bears who will stay with us forever. On a small ice floe a mother and 2 cubs were feasting on a narwhal. They were so relaxed and focussed they didn t mind us dropping by. The Captain slowed the ship, and we hung out with them for an hour, as they ate, groomed, suckled, and finally rested. This was more than a photo opp, it was an invitation into their world, no fear, no barriers and no time limits. It was an Attenborough documentary, although we weren t watching it, we were part of it. This is the reason and the reward for travel. Thank you for taking me there. Suzanne C. Pathways to Franklin August PHOTOS IN THIS BROCHURE We like to keep it real, so we avoid using stock photos, and mainly use photos taken by ourselves and our travellers. Most of the photos in this brochure have been taken by us, or by travellers on the actual trips. This one was taken by Rose on her 2017 Arctic trip. We include photography tips in your preparation to help you capture the magic. All Arctic expedition cruises have a professional photographer too, to give you tips along the way FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 3

Rays, draped like cur tains, swayed across the entire sky You ll start your journey as a traveller, and we look Forward to welcoming you home as a friend. We re looking Forward to helping you start your journey. We drove 140km in the darkness then pulled into a clearing, and immediately the lights appeared. As the beam grew in brightness it extended across the whole sky and surrounded us from above. Our guide said something good was building, but it was so much better than good. The beam seemed to burst open and rays, draped like curtains, swayed across the entire sky, with pinks, reds and purples joining the greens and yellows. There were cries of delight and wonder, spontaneous hugs, and amazing memories that will last a lifetime. Aurora watching on our 2017 Canadian Arctic, Wildlife and Aurora Journey. 4 Welcome to The Arctic It s a pretty cool place... We want to take you to an incredibly vast and breathtaking place, where a giant sheet of ice links three continents and wildlife freely roams, swims and flies across them. Where for just three months each year the ice retreats, the sun emerges, and this incredible world comes alive, inviting us in. This is the Arctic, poles apart from Antarctica. It is warmer; there is more wildlife, there are ancient settlements, and polar bears replace penguins. Polar bears are the kings, revered and feared by all. The seas thrive with fabled creatures, including the narwhal, with its unicorn like tusk, and the white beluga whales. The wild, remote Canadian Arctic is filled with Inuit settlements and tales of brave exploration by man and mammals. Dazzling scenery stretches to the horizon and the definition of frontier needs no words. Greenland s iceberg factory pushes out 20 million tonnes of brilliant white skyscrapers, and soaring cathedrals with crystal spires. The Norwegian Arctic is the most northern, and more compact, luring headline hunting explorers for centuries and seabirds by the million. It is also the realm of the polar bear and takes you to within 100km of the North Pole. In Canada, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) dances across the sky from August till April, giving you the widest time frame to catch this amazing sight. We really want to help you experience the magic of The Arctic, to be immersed in the vastness, to be astounded by the wildlife, and to be inspired by the human determination to explore and succeed. We hope our brochure will encourage you to start your own Arctic journey and we look Forward to talking about it with you soon FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 7

5 CANADIAN ARCTIC AND GREENLAND The Canadian Arctic is huge. It is wonderfully rich and diverse, with boundless landscapes, thriving wildlife, and thousands of years of human settlement.it offers an endless paradise of wilderness. With more than 30,000 islands, including three of the world s largest, it really does seem like another world. We love it s scenery, history, mystery, and abundant wildlife. Mountains and tundra stretch to the horizon and exploring onshore is a constant discovery. Visit rarely seen ancient settlements and take extended hikes exploring the scenery. Remote beaches are strewn with bones, relics and fossils, reminding us of exploration and survival in these barren lands. EUROPEAN ARCTIC + NORTH ATLANTIC SPITSBERGEN The Svalbard archipelago in the Norwegian Arctic is celebrated as a breeding ground for many seabirds, marine mammals and polar bears. Expedition cruise itineraries take guests to the northern part of the island of Spitsbergen to explore the massive glaciers and stunning fjords. This area has the highest concentration of wildlife and places of historic and scenic interest in the archipelago. The unique ice capabilities of our ships allow us to venture to the edge of the permanent Arctic pack ice where incredible encounters with polar bears typically occur. THE FRANKLIN EXPEDITION The most amous and mysterious quest for The Northwest Passage is the Franklin expedition of Sir John sailed from London with high hopes and confidence, but was never seen again. His lead ship was finally found 2014 (with the help of One Ocean), and we will get you close to her resting site. THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE The quest for a trading route linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans lured men here for over 4 centuries. Many died, and more died trying to find them. In 1905, Roald Amundsen found a way through, completing the passage in 3 years. Thankfully our journeys are quicker than that.we follow their routes and visit historic sites along the way. GREENLAND The largest, non-continental island in the world, and its least populated. Greenland is a vast, remote land with a unique culture. It brings ancient traditions to a modern world. Brilliantly colourful villages dot the whiteness. The massive icecap produces all of the Arctic s soaring icebergs. BAFFIN ISLAND The fifth largest in the world is indented by fjords, and a glacier-laden spine with peaks up to 2,147m extending throughout most of its 1,500km.It is believed to have been visited by Norse explorers in the 11th century and is mostly protected to preserve its jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys, spectacular fjords, and marine coastal wildlife. THE FAROE ISLANDS An archipelago in the middle of the North Atlantic, The Faroe s are some of the more remote, inhabited islands in the world. Famous for their natural beauty, rolling green hills and grass-covered roofs, the country is dominated by steep mountains, sheep, and the largest colony of storm petrels in the world. ICELAND Iceland is where glaciers reach for the skies, deep blue mountain lakes fill steep valleys, sharp green peaks rise on all sides. Hidden hot springs in secluded valleys far from civilisation will relax and calm you as you take in the spectacular views. You can tour the island in comfort or go trekking, ice climbing, jeep riding, or jump on an Icelandic horse. With no boundaries on skill levels or experience, our Iceland journeys let you really experience the island s beauty and landscapes FORWARDTRAVEL.COM.AU 9

9 THE BEST EXPEDITION SHIPS AKADEMIK IOFFE AKADEMIK SERGEY VAVILOV NEW - RCGS RESOLUTE Capable, C omfortable, and morechoices Designed for polar research, sister ships Akademik Ioffe and Akademik Sergey Vavilov are modern, comfortable, safe, ice-strengthened ships which are almost identical. Built in Rauma, Finland in 1988/89 they are widely regarded as the two best polar expedition ships in the world. Each ship has an experienced Russian crew. Both ships are operated exclusively by One Ocean Expeditions. Designed for passenger comfort, RCGS Resolute is modern, well appointed, safe and ice-strengthened. Take a look at some of the superb facilities aboard, including numerous passenger areas designed for relaxation and our onboard educational programming. Quite simply, she is one of the most comfortable and capable expedition ships in the world today.. RCGS RESOLUTE HIGHLIGHTS STABILITY Both vessels were specifically built to work in tandem, conducting sensitive hydro-acoustic research and there is little, if any, ambient noise or vibrations from the engines. Ship stabilization is gaine through a built-in ballast trimming system. As a result, they are the two most stable expedition vessels afloat today - significantly more than smaller ships. This stability is something that you will greatly appreciate if the ship encounters rough conditions. THE BRIDGE The ship s bridge is located on Deck 6 and is open to passengers 24-hours a day. The officer on watch and helmsman can always be found on duty on the bridge, and it is also the best place to meet the Master of the vessel. The chart room is a facinating place to visit and expedition staff or crew members are often available to answer question about the equipment and instruments found on the bridge. In addition, the bridge is an excellent platform for viewing wildlife and birdlife. TOP DECK AND OBSERVATORY The top deck enjoyes 360 views around the ship, and it is a great place to enjoy the calm sea days and spectacular scenery. Bring your travel mug with you to the top deck on pleasant afternoons and our Adevnture Concierges will bring a Thermos of hot chocolate, tea or coffee. Other popular viewpoints around the ship include the bow (front deck) of the ship and stern (rear) of the ship. The fly-bridges are also fantastic places to view the surroundings. OBSERVATION LOUNGE Situated on Deck 7, immediately above the Bridge of the ship, one of the most popular locations for guests to gather and enjoy incredible panoramic views over the ship s bow. It s a great spot to sit with a book, or to observe wildlife through your binoculars at close quarters. Afternoon tea is served here and there is a coffee/tea station available 24-hours a day. A full bar service is also available here. SHIP S BRIDGE The ship s bridge is open to passengers day and night. With plenty of space for onlookers, the bridge doubles as an excellent viewing platform and a great place to watch our Captain and officers at work. This is a fascinating place to spend time and learn about navigation and ship operations. Guides will be on the bridge to assist in wildlife spotting and identification. JACUZZI / HOT TUB AND SWIMMING POOL No matter the weather, the warm water Jacuzzi is protected from the elements with a clear glass covered cupola. Our heated pool offers those looking for a more active water experience the perfect opportunity. Another benefit to this location is the comfortable and well-appointed casual seating area featuring sun lounges and exceptional views from the ship. 13 NORTHWEST PASSAGE & BAFFIN ISLAND 14 DAYS Explore the remote Northwest Passage and stunning fjords of Baffin Island The sense of history and exploration was all around us. There was a real frontier feel and the whole experience was amazing. R & J WATSON, Melbourne, Australia ARCTIC TRAVELLERS, 2015 HOPES AND DREAMS Explore the remote Northwest Passage and stunning fjords of the Baffin Island coastline. We enjoy excellent wildlife encounters, Inuit community visits, exciting navigation, hikes on shore and superb photographic opportunities along the way. We follow in the footsteps of the early Arctic explorers. Wildlife is a major draw card of our expedition, but there is plenty of historical interest too. 19 AUG. EDMONTON Arrive in Edmonton for transfer to your hotel. 20 AUG. CAMBRIDGE BAY We depart Edmonton on a charter flight to Cambridge Bay, a remote outpost above the Arctic Circle. Located on the southern shores of Victoria Island. Enjoy a walking tour of the town and then board our expedition ship, the Akademik Ioffe. Excitement is in the air as we enjoy a welcome cocktail and cast off, bound for the fabled Northwest Passage. 21 AUG. NORTHWEST PASSAGE As we chart a course into the Northwest Passage, our onboard presentation series begins and we delve into the tale of the Franklin expedition and the mystery of what happened. We aim to visit Victory Point, travelling very near the actual location of the wreck of HMS Erebus, while learning about the quest for exploration that eventually opened up the Arctic. Experts agree that the second of Franklin s lost ships, HMS Terror, is likely to be in this vicinity. 22 AUG. CONNINGHAM BAY Arriving at Conningham Bay we find one of the most remarkable wildlife sites in the Arctic. A hotspot for polar bears who come here to feast on Beluga whales. The hope for a passage through the American land barrier lured explorers since the 1400s. All met with failure, and many with disaster. In 1906, after a journey of 3 years Roald Amundsen, found it. 23 AUG. BELLOT STRAIT Today we transit the narrow passage of Bellot Strait. The mixing of waters in this strait provides an abundant food source for marine mammals, and we will keep our eyes peeled for harp seals, bearded seals and even polar bears. 24 AUG. BEECHEY ISLAND Beechey Island is of great historic importance. It is here that Sir John Franklin s ill-fated expedition spent its last comfortable winter in 1845 before disappearing into the icy vastness. A trip ashore at Beechey Island to visit the grave markers on a remote windswept beach gives one pause to wonder on the bravery (or foolhardiness) of these pioneering explorers, as they sought a way through the barren, frozen landscape. 25 AUG. LANCASTER SOUND Cruising the coastline of Devon Island, we are now in the waters of Lancaster Sound a rich, bio-diverse region often referred to as the wildlife super highway of the Arctic. Massive volumes of water from Baffin Bay to the east, Beaufort Sea to the west, and the archipelago of islands to the north combine to make a rich cocktail of nutrients supporting an abundance of Arctic wildlife. 26 AUG. SIRMILIK NATIONAL PARK We sight the wild north coast of Baffin Island and navigate through Navy Board Inlet. The vast landscapes of Sirmilik National Park surround us as we approach the remote Inuit community of Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet). A highlight will be a visit to the Natinnak Centre. We also enjoy meeting the local children of Mittimatalik and marveling at their athletic abilities as they demonstrate traditional Inuit games. 27 AUG. GIBBS FJORD This morning we enter the spectacular Gibbs Fjord. Our expedition ship will be dwarfed by the giant peaks and snowy glaciers as we cruise along the dark waters. 28 AUG. SABELLA FJORD Isabella Bay (Niginaniq) is an important summer habitat and feeding area for endangered bowhead whales. Polar bears, ringed seals, Canada geese, snow geese and narwhal are also found in and around the area. 29 AUG. SUNSHINE FJORD Sunshine Fjord straddles the Arctic Circle. This location offers terrific hiking opportunities and we have a number of great routes in mind. You may wish to take the extended hike or choose to take the less strenuous option along the shoreline. The sheltered waters of the fjord provide the kayakers with great conditions for paddling. 30 AUG. PANGNIRTUNG Nestled in the heart of Cumberland Sound and the western gateway to Auyuittuq National Park, the village of Pangniqtuuq is beautifully situated between the mountains and the sea. 31 AUG. MONUMENTAL ISLAND Situated in the Davis Strait, the rocky dome of Monumental Island can be seen from a distance. We explore by zodiac along the rocky shoreline and hope to encounter polar bears in this vicinity. In good weather a complete circumnavigation of the island in the zodiacs is possible. We often encounter large icebergs drifting southward towards Labrador and Newfoundland on the currents of the Davis Strait. 01 SEP. SAVE $1,000 The Svalbard archipelago is a remote island chain situated between Norway and the North Pole. Spitsbergen is the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago. These wild and remote islands offer a tremendous wildlife and birdlife experience, as well as a fascinating lesson in glaciology. Our itinerary allows for a thorough exploration of the western and northern coastline of the island of Spitsbergen. As we voyage up the coastline we make frequent stops at well known wildlife sites and places of historic interest. GO DEEPER IN THE PACK ICE TO SEE WILDLIFE ON THE EDGE MORE TIME ABOVE THE ARCTIC CIRCLE EXTRA DAYLIGHT EXTRA EXPLORING THE VERY BEST PARTS OF SPITSBERGEN 27 JUN. LONGYEARBYEN Arrive in Longyearbyen and transfer to the hotel for your included pre-cruise accomodation. 28 JUN. LONGYEARBYEN Today we embark Longyearbyen and sail out into Isfjorden during the early evening. With almost 24 hours of daylight at this time of the year, we enjoy the views from the outer decks of the ship as we depart. We meet our fellow passengers and the expedition team during an introductory briefing and enjoy a welcome dinner as we set sail. 29 JUN. BOURBONHAMNA Beluga whales are frequently seen as they transit the narrow sound near Bourbonhamna. It is estimated there are approximately five to ten thousand belugas in the Svalbard population. On our shore excursion, an old hunting cabin and other artifacts are points of interest. We will also hope to catch a glimpse of dozens of reindeer that inhabit the area. 30 JUN. LILLIEHOOK GLACIER The Lilliehook Glacier is an incredible sight. The face stretches almost seven kilometers across and has a height of around 80-meters. Viewed from the ship or on a zodiac cruise you come to appreciate the enormous scale of our surroundings. The area is home to numerous bird colonies and a variety of different species. As we cruise the dark waters, we are always on the lookout for bearded and ringed seals, both species known to frequent this fjord. 01 JUL. MONACO GLACIER No trip along the north coast of Spitsbergen would be complete without a visit to Monaco Glacier. A wide glacier face at the head of the fjord makes for spectacular kayaking and zodiac cruising. The coastal plain near the mouth of Liefdefjorden offers superb hiking and is often a great place to spot polar bears that come here to hunt for ringed seals or feed on birds eggs. 02 JUL. PHIPPSOYA At 81 north latitude, Phippsoya is just 540 nautical miles from the North Pole. The high ice classification of our ship allows us to approach the edge of the pack ice in safety and comfort. Because of its proximity to the permanent Arctic ice pack, Phippsoya offers the potential for great polar bear viewing. In recent seasons we have enjoyed excellent encounters with polar bears in this vicinity JUL. HINLOPEN STRAIT We enter the main channel separating Svalbard s two main islands. In Hinlopen Strait, the bird cliffs at Alkefjellet are nearby Murchison Fjord is a wonderful place to kayak or zodiac cruise between the islands. There are some excellent hiking routes here, affording us breathtaking views. 05 JUL. FUGLESANGENOYA Fuglesangenoya is home to a large dovekie colony. Nearby is the old whaling station of Smeerenburg, literally translated as Blubber Town. As we hike the shoreline of the old station, we learn about the importance of whaling in the discovery and exploration of the Svalbard archipelago. The blubber ovens stand as a reminder to this harsh industry in an equally harsh environment. 06 JUL. PRINCE CHARLES ISLAND We visit the walrus colony on Prince Charles Island and hope to see these odd looking animals ashore. It is an incredible sight. Approaching from downwind can often confirm that walrus are ashore - the smell of a walrus haul out is quite unique! Tonight we celebrate our journey with a special dinner attended by the ship s Captain. 07 JUL. RETURN TO LONGYEARBYEN Arriving back into Longyearbyen this morning, our journey comes to an end. A transfer into town is provided for those choosing to stay a few days, or to the airport for those departing. PHOTOGRAPHY SYMPOSIUM 18 JUNE - 28 JUNE 2019 This special departure visits all the key sites in west and north Svalbard. An extra highlight will be the special photography symposium open to all guests, no matter what your experience or skill level. This runs in addition to the regular series of presentations on history, ornithology, geology, wildlife, exploration and the natural world. The members of our expert photographic team each have a specialist area including wildlife photography, landscape and composition, macro and so on. We make regular use of our ship-board multi-media studio for breakout sessions and to review and critique our images throughout the voyage. Our photographic goals on this departure will be formed and led by the light available both onshore and on the water. This voyage has wide appeal no matter what your interests. For the photography buffs, this trip is not to be missed! 18 NORWAY - SPITSBERGEN EXPLORER 13 DAYS An in depth exploration of Spitsbergen and The Sval bard Archipelago The size and space of The Arctic is amazing. It really is an exploration, and an expedition. Hiking on the remote islands was incredible - being surrounded by history and unending landscapes. Such a privilege. Thanks to everyone at Forward Travel for helping me prepare and experience it. K BLUNDY Melbourne, Australia ARCTIC TRAVELLER, 2017 PHIPPSOYA The Norwegian territory of Svalbard and the islands that make up the archipelago offer a tremendous wildlife and birdlife experience, as well as a fascinating lesson in glaciology. The islands were first used as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries and are now celebrated as a breeding ground for many seabirds, along with marine mammals and the elusive polar bear. Our expedition vessel is perfectly suited for remote polar exploration. With her high ice classification, we are able to push further to the north along the edge of the ice pack. It is here we frequently encounter the icon of the Arctic the polar bear hunting for seals and other food to sustain them through the Arctic summer. 07 JUN. LONGYEARBYEN Arrive in Longyearbyen and transfer to the hotel for your included pre-cruise accomodation. 08 JUN. LONGYEARBYEN Today we embark your expedition ship, Akademik Sergey Vavilov in Longyearbyen and sail through Adventfjorden and into Isfjorden then out into the Greenland Sea. So begins your Arctic cruise, 24 hours of daylight and hopefully some great photographic opportunities and memories. 09 JUN. 10 JUN. STORFJORDEN Coming around the most southerly point of Spitsbergen, we push into the broad expanse of Storfjorden. Exploring Dolerittneset near Kapp Lee, the lush vegetation of this region is remarkable given the latitude at 70 North. 11 JUN. HORNSUND Returning to the west coast, explore the glacier-filled bay leading into Hornsund. The entire archipelago of Svalbard is a lesson in glaciology and our on-board guides will explain the formation of this fantastic landscape during hikes and zodiac excursions. Hornsund is home to the Polish Polar research station and a good place to see reindeer and Arctic foxes. 12 JUN. 14TH JULY GLACIER AND KROSSFJORDEN The rocky shores of Krossfjorden are home to numerous bird colonies and species. We anchor in a protected harbour, launch the zodiacs and cruise along the bird cliffs near the 14th July Glacier. Bearded and ringed seals are known to frequent the waters here and we watch out for them in the dark waters of the fjord. 13JUN.KROSSFJORDEN, SMEERENBURGFJORDEN Sailing out of Krossfjorden and Kongsfjorden, you may be fortunate enough to see the historic airship anchor pylon near the scientific community of Ny Ålesund. Nearby, Smeerenburgfjorden has a four hundred year history of whaling and is a favorite spot as we round the northwestern tip of Spitsbergen. 14 JUN. EXPLORATION OF THE SEA ICE Continue north and east up into the ice, hoping to cross the 80 north parallel. Approaching the ice-edge the ship slows down and all hands are either on the bridge or out on the outer decks scanning for wildlife. Bearded seals, ringed seals and walruses may be found hauled-out on the edges of the ice. Harp seals swim in herds of 10 to 20 through the open water channels in the ice. 15 JUN. PHIPPSOYA At 81 degrees north latitude, Phippsoya one of the Seven Islands is only 540 nautical miles from the North Pole. Because of its proximity to the permanent pack ice, Phippsoya offers the potential for great polar bear viewings. Be sure to get up to the bridge and take a picture of the ship s GPS showing this incredibly high polar latitude near the top of the world. 16 JUN. NORDAUSTLANDET AND HINLOPEN STRAIT From the ice edge, turn south into the main strait separating Svalbard s two main islands: Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. In Hinlopen Strait, the bird cliffs at Alkefjellet are home to more than a hundred thousand breeding Brunnich s guillemots, as well as thousands of kittiwakes and black guillemots. 17 JUN. LEIFDEFJORDEN Enter Leifdefjorden and slowly cruise towards the Monaco Glacier. This vast sweep of ice more than four miles wide provides a fabulous backdrop for a zodiac cruise. Ice caves and tumbling seracs are an impressive sight as are the thousands of black-legged kittiwakes feeding on the upwelling of rich nutrients found near the sub-glacial outflow. A morning of cruising in the ice is best followed by a hike on the tundra. Red phalaropes, purple sandpipers and vibrant tundra provide plenty of viewing and photography opportunities. The geology is fascinating and it is a great chance to see reindeer and Arctic foxes. 18 JUN. ALKEHORNET Alkehornet, at the mouth of Isfjord, offers breathtaking views and an incredible tundra walk. Arctic foxes can often be seen here, as well as reindeer. Towering above the site is a hornshaped mount covered in guillemots and kittiwakes. This evening, celebrate the journey with a special dinner attended by the ship s Captain. It s a great time to reflect on a wonderful voyage in this wild and remote place. 19 JUN. LONGYEARBYEN DISEMBARKATION Arrive back into Longyearbyen this morning and disembark after breakfast. Transfer back into town with a chance to visit the museums and buy a few last-minute souvenirs before transferring to the airport for your return flights. Phippsoya is the most northerly island of the Svalbard archipelago, It is a wildlife hub, being a favoured hunting ground for polar bears, and a great place for seeing walrus. 25 THE AURORA BOREALIS IN YELLOWKNIFE Gaze in wonder as the sky comes alive. A phenomenal experience We really did chase the sky! Our guide drove into the darkness for over an hour to find a clear patch of sky and the Aurora danced across the whole sky. He was an amazing guide and without him we would not have seen the Aurora. Thanks Forward Travel for finding him, and taking us to Yellowknife. Forward Travel Director, Rose first saw the Aurora in 2016, and has been back twice since to see them again. Watching the Aurora dance above me in Yellowknife was a phenomenal, almost fairytale like, experience that I will never forget. It was so much more intense and dramatic than I expected, that I simply didn t want to leave. Four of our Arctic expeditions coincide with excellent Aurora viewing in Yellowknife and I encourage everyone booking on those trips to add an Aurora package to your holiday, as it is only a 2hr flight from Edmonton, where several Arctic trips start and end. As with all nature experiences, nothing is nothing guaranteed so our packages are 3 nights, giving you a great chance to see the Aurora, but if you have extra time, you should add another night or 2, as it s a long way to go back. This is my guide to Aurora viewing in Yellowknife, with help of locals who will be doing their best to ensure you see them too. WHEN IS THE THE AURORA SEASON? It runs from August-April, when there is darkness. During May-July it is just too bright to see them. In keeping with the Arctic season, we are foucussing on August-September. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THEM? Mid-August to the end of September and from mid-november to mid-april are the best aurora viewing seasons in Yellowknife. WHAT TIME DO THEY APPEAR? Whenever the skies are dark. The peak hours are between 11pm and 2am. In Aug- Sep you can expect vewing to start from 9:30pm to catch sunset and last till 3:30am. WHAT IF IT S CLOUDY? Clouds literally bring the curtain down on the show, but quick cloud movement means you still have a good chance of some clear skies during the evenings. Having at least the three nights gives you a good chance for clear skies. WHAT DO I NEED TO PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA? A good SLR with a wide aperture is best, and a tripod for stability as you will need a 2-5 second exposure to capture the colours. WILL I SEE STARS AS WELL? Oh Yes! you will see millions of stars, satellites, and the whole Milky Way. It s quite mind blowing (if the skies are clear). The aurora shines beneath the stars, and the viewing areas are away from town, so you will have a wonderful star show as well as aurora viewing. WHAT S THE WEATHER LIKE? AUGUST. Late evening sunsets will lead right into aurora chasing hours which can present you with spectacular photography opportunities. The daytime temperatures reach low 20 C, and the nights are beginning to dip below 0 C (that s still considered warm in Yellowknife). More importantly, the skies are often clear. SEPTEMBER. It s the autumn equinox month, and common to see heightened aurora activity from September into October. The good conditions from August carry on, although there will be nights where chasing clear skies is required. Temperatures begin cooling off in the evening, but are still not extreme. WHAT WILL I ACTUALLY SEE? As humans we are so eager to process information that our eyes and brain don t allow time to let the colours develop, so we see greens, yellows, and maybe a tinge of pink. Cameras take it slower to let the depth develop. All these photos were taken with 2-5 second exposures. HOW DO WE SEE THE AURORA? The key thing is to get away from any light pollution. Some companies have viewing areas in remote locations, and others will drive around the area chasing clear skies. These are some samples of the aurora viewing tours available. We will discuss them with you to make sure you choose the one most suitable for your needs. AURORA VILLAGE: Relax and take in nature s most spectacular show in comfort at Aurora Village. You can stay warm in your teepee with a wood fire stove and hot beverages while you wait for the aurora to arrive. INGRAHAM TRAIL CABIN: A clear dark sky and high solar activity can provide an evening light show that is worth staying up into the wee hours for. Enjoy the warmth of a crackling wood stove, hot beverages and snacks at a remote cabin on the Ingraham Trail. AURORA CHASING: Take to the open road and litrerally chase the sky looking for the aurora. This option gives you the maximum chance to see the lights as you are not restricted to one location. G AND F BROWN Brisbane AURORA CHASERS 2017 AURORA AWAKENING 4 DAYS DAY 1. ARRIVE IN YELLOWKNIFE - AURORA Upon arrival in Yellowknife, grab a taxi to your chosen accommodation. This afternoon set out to explore the town. Definitely call into the visitor centre, and adjacent museum to get a great overview of the town (pop n 20,000), officially settled 82 years ago, but inhabited by Dene for thousands of years. Depart this evening for your first Aurora viewing. DAY 2. CAMERON FALLS - AURORA (B) After a well-deserved sleep in, take a scenic tour out to Cameron Falls. Heading out of town you ll visit the Giant Mine and the Yellowknife River to hear the River Legend, a Dene story dating to a time when it's said giants roamed the landscape. Travel along the picturesque Igraham trail to the trailhead and hike just over 1km to see Cameron Falls, followed by a picnic lunch. Those feeling energetic could extend the tour with an excursion to the ramparts, another 8 km past the falls. In August and September as Fall arrives the changing colours of the foliage are a fantastic sight. This evening depart again for more Aurora viewing. DAY 3. YOUR CHOICE TODAY AND AURORA. (B) There s plenty to do in town, from meeting local artisans, walking trails and excellent cafes. Make sure you take a walk around the historic Old Town with its great shopping and food. This evening embark on your final Aurora viewing. DAY 4. DEPART YELLOWKNIFE. PRICING: We book your arrangements directly with the service provider at your destination. We pay them in the local currency, or USD. This means we can keep our prices lower, and means if there is a big shift in the exchange rates it may affect the price you pay. We strive to maintain the price although if the change is significant your price will either decrease or increase accordingly. We welcome clients to pay early, either in full or partial, to remove the risk of fluctuations. Once you have paid in full for your trip there will be no changes to the price. We must however reserve the right to amend our prices, at any time up to final payment has been received. The rules for your airfares will be advised at time of booking. CHANGES BY US: Amendments and Cancellations: We plan everything to run smoothly but sometimes changes have to be made, and sometimes they have to be made quickly, perhaps without notice. You need to understand that your itinerary could change due to weather, political situations, airline or cruise schedule changes, transport delays, force majeure events or any other circumstance. Forward Travel cannot accept liability for loss of enjoyment, distress, disappointment or delays or any costs you may incur as a result of such changes. On rare occasions, where a component of your booking is subject to a minimum number of passengers, and that number is not reached, or for other reasons, our operators may decide to cancel a tour or service that you have booked. We will always endeavour to provide alternative arrangements for you which may affect your final tour price. If we cannot book a suitable alternative for you we will refund you any payments you have paid for the component. In the event of such a situation you will not be entitled to make any further claim for compensation or damages for any loss, consequential damage, expenses, and loss of time, distress, disappointment or inconvenience which may result from such cancellation. TRAVEL INSURANCE: You must have comprehensive travel insurance appropriate for your destination and health to travel on our trips. This is to protect you. The policy needs to include cover for emergency evacuation and repatriation and you must carry a copy of your insurance with you when you travel. We strongly suggest you take out the policy when you pay your deposit. Your deposit is non-refundable so you should really have cover in place when you pay it. We recommend you visit your doctor and dentist when you book and you must disclose any pre-existing medical condition. If you fail your medical, a full refund of the deposit paid will be given providing you send us a medical certificate within two weeks of the date of your booking. We guarantee any travel insurance policy purchased through Forward Travel for travel booked through Forward Travel will have appropriate cover. Any travel policy will be subject to the terms and conditions on the policy. We cannot accept responsibility for any policies obtained elsewhere. By booking with us you understand and accept there may be inherent risks which include, without limitation, the possibility of injury or death, psychological trauma, disease, loss or damage to property, inconvenience and discomfort. You assume all such risk for all itineraries, bookings and tours, and release Us from all losses, costs, damages, expenses, payments, claims or actions arising from illness, injury, disease, misadventure, loss or damage to property, discomfort and inconvenience or death resulting from these inherent risks.
