1 OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Outdoor ADVENTURES World-Class Adventures on Land, on Water, and in the Air DID YOU KNOW? LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN HANG GLIDING In 2017, the Tennessee State Park system celebrated its 80th anniversary. To commemorate the milestone, members of the park system listed their 80 favorite Tennessee adventures, which included golfing at Harrison Bay, mountain biking at Booker T. Washington, and hiking to Blue Hole Spring at Red Clay. Bordering the Tennessee River and tucked between the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains, attracts seasoned hikers and nature lovers from around the world. Visitors will find breathtaking views and adrenaline-producing adventures in the city, surrounding neighborhoods, and beyond. Travel magazines, along with countless websites, frequently include among their top outdoor destinations. Climbing magazine named as America s New Climbing Capitol for its enthusiastic climbing community and high-quality sandstone. Men s Journal listed as one of the 20 Best Mountain Towns in America, while Expedia s Viewfinder blog featured in Every State s Best Destination for Nature Lovers, citing rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, and paragliding as just a few of the outdoor adventures that await visitors. 222 CHATTANOOGARESOURCEANDRELOCATION.COM (TOP) PHOTO COURTESY OF CHATTANOOGA CVB
2 OUTDOOR ADVENTURES HEAD OF THE HOOCH Parks and Greenways Six state parks offering more than 50,000 acres of mountains, canyons, and streams surround the area. Booker T. Washington State Park, with 353 acres, and Harrison Bay State Park, with 1,200 acres, are located on Lake Chickamauga. Near Apison, the 263-acre Red Clay State Historic Park is home to a natural Blue Hole Spring. On the western edge of Lookout Mountain sits Cloudland Canyon State Park, spanning nearly 3,500 acres with waterfalls, wild caves, and cliffs ideal for hiking and cave tours. Prentice Cooper State Forest, just a short drive from, offers 25,000 acres, including 35 miles of hiking trails, camping areas, rock climbing, and more. South Cumberland State Park is located within four Tennessee counties; the park has approximately 25,539 acres and some of the best hiking and backcountry camping in the region. Locals and tourists can also take advantage of s walking and biking paths, including the popular 13-mile Tennessee Riverwalk. Area greenways and parks include the North Chickamauga Creek Greenway, the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway, Wolftever Creek, and Enterprise South Nature Park. Hiking and Mountain Biking Ranging from easy to strenuous, hiking trails in are considered to be some of the best in the Southeast. More than 50 trailheads can be reached within 30 minutes of downtown, from family-friendly hikes at Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center to the more challenging 10-mile Big Daddy Loop on Lookout Mountain. Serious hikers can also navigate the lengthy Cumberland Trail. Still a work in progress, the trail currently has 210 miles open for hiking and can be accessed at more than 30 trailheads. Falling Water Falls, Glen Falls Trail, and Lula Lake Falls are among local hiking trails that lead to tumbling waterfalls, and Stringer s Ridge offers hiking and a short loop for mountain biking convenient to NorthShore. Considered the crown jewel of mountain biking, Raccoon Mountain provides a network of intermediate and advanced trails only 15 minutes from downtown, while Five Points atop Lookout Mountain boasts more than 20 miles of high-speed riding. Rock Climbing, Caving, Deep Water Soloing Lookout Mountain s Sunset Rock offers more than 100 routes for traditional rock climbers. They can also choose from hundreds of routes at the Tennessee Wall, with new routes being established still today. Considered one of the best bouldering areas CHATTANOOGARESOURCEANDRELOCATION.COM 223
3 OUTDOOR ADVENTURES OCOEE RIVER Greenways/Hiking Trails* in the country, Stone Fort, or Little Rock City, is located alongside the Montlake Golf Course in Soddy-Daisy. Climbers of every skill level can brave the sandstone bluffs, but only the best travel to Stone Fort each fall for the Triple Crown Bouldering Series. Caving enthusiasts can explore over 7,000 caves in and around. Raccoon Mountain Caverns, Tennessee s highest rated cave, offers more than five and a half miles of underground passages. One of s most iconic attractions, Ruby Falls, is a 145-foot waterfall beneath the surface of Lookout Mountain. Deep water soloing, a favorite activity in the summer months, is growing in popularity especially in. Nickajack Lake provides a 50-foot limestone cliff that towers over the deep water below, while Foster Falls, only a 45-minute drive from, features a cavernous rock behind a 60-foot waterfall. The Blueway is easily accessible from boat launches along the river, perfect for kayaks and canoes. The river also draws residents on sunny afternoons for water skiing and paddle boarding. Within an hour of, the Ocoee River is a top U.S. destination for whitewater rafting due to its consistent class III and IV rapids. Avid fishermen are drawn to Chickamauga Lake, a favorite for bass fishing, and other area lakes and rivers for their variety of freshwater fish. Lookout Mountain Flight Park, one of the largest hang gliding flight schools in the world, has been offering tandem flights and flight training for thrill-seekers since Skydiving companies operating in include Skydiving Adventures and Skydiving Company, each providing an unforgettable experience above the Scenic City.
