2 page 2 Kilimanjaro Lemosho Charity Challenge The words Challenge and Kilimanjaro are synonymous. Kilimanjaro is after all the highest point on the entire African continent and the world s highest free standing mountain. Summit success on Kilimanjaro is strongly related to the amount of time you spend acclimatising and therefore we use our preferred route of Lemosho. At 8 days/7 nights, it is the longest and therefore linked to the highest summit success rate. It is also considered the most beautiful with panoramic vistas around the mountain as you go. We fly you into Kilimanjaro s international airport and transfer you to the small town of Moshi. The hotel is a beautiful relaxed establishment and it is here that you will meet your Guide for a briefing on the ing days. He will ensure that you are prepared for your departure the following morning. The drive to the Londrossi National Park Gate will show you rural Tanzania passing through several villages en route. Once you reach the gate and pass through the formal entry procedures, you will be on your way. The scenery will slowly and dramatically change from the colourful dense rain forest (plete with monkeys!), to moorland through to alpine desert. This vast expanse that was once a volcano will bee apparent as you circle on the southern circuit of this huge mountain passing Cathedral Rock, the Lava Tower, Barranco and then to Barafu. All of this time you are acclimatising. The short ascent up the infamous vertical looking Barranco Wall is unexpected but great fun and has great views of Mt Meru from the top. When it finally es, the trek up to this incredible summit is what you came for. The tremendous effort, which begins at about midnight, is what makes climbing Kilimanjaro a magnificent achievement. After a potentially cold and dark, 6-7 hr climb the initial target is Stella Point and then onto the famous summit itself. Savour the moment, watch that sun rise over the earth s curvature above a blanket of fluffy cloud; a wonderful sight. Be sure to take in your surroundings; the endless view over Africa, the Kibo crater and the glacier before capturing your achievement with a photo next to the signpost. The descent is a much faster affair, loose scree and soft dust initially will allow you to virtually slide back down before trekking out of the park the following day. Completion of this challenge, and it is a true challenge, is something to be very proud of. To sum up the challenge... Summit Kilimanjaro (5895), the highest point in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world. It s a physically and mentally tough challenge but a spectacularly rewarding achievement to be proud of! Why choose our Kilimanjaro Lemosho Charity Challenge? Exemplary Acclimatisation Medical research has proven that even 1 extra day acclimatising is hugely beneficial to your chances of being unaffected by the effects of high altitude. The Lemosho route spends more time acclimatising than any other route. You re only here once; get it right. Early Guarantee Status/Low Minimum Numbers Our challenges are guaranteed to run once we receive bookings from between 2 and 6 people depending upon the trip. This means you can fundraise safe in the knowledge that your trip will go ahead and not be cancelled due to low numbers at the last minute. All Meals and Water Included on Trek All meals and drinking water (boiled) on trek are included. That s breakfast, lunch, post trek tea/biscuits and a 3-course evening meal. All dietary requirements can be catered for including Vegan and Gluten free - just let us know. No supplements of fuel charges Our trip costs include all your flights related costs so you won t have to cover an unknown additional cost at a later date. No supplements to extend We do not charge admin fees for using different departure and/ or return flight dates. We re also happy to help you arrange your extended break. Decent International flights We do not pre-book a block of seats on an aircraft in the hope of filling them to save money. Our flights are booked individually, using reputable airlines that take a reasonable time to get you to Kilimanjaro and just 1 stop. Challenging but Safe Weather conditions can often make our trips more challenging. There is a fine line between challenging and unsafe, especially on the climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Our experienced Guides will make the right decisions to keep you safe. Qualified English Speaking Local Guides We employ our local guides full time. Their training, including first aid, is renewed regularly. They know what they re doing, loved by our clients and they love their jobs. and it shows! Peace of Mind All our trips have full ATOL protection. See the last page for full details.
3 page 3 Itinerary Day 1. Depart UK Fly from London bound for Kilimanjaro. Day 2. Arrive Tanzania You will be collected by our Staff at the airport and transferred to the hotel. Your Guide will be there to meet you and brief you on the timings for tomorrow and offer any further assistance. You are then free to settle in and prepare for the trek the following day. Our friendly hotel staff are on hand to provide any advice or assistance. Day 3. Moshi - Londrossi Park Gate (2100 m) - Forest Camp (2800 m) Your Guide will meet you at the hotel and after breakfast, drive to the Londrossi Gate (approx 2 hrs drive) on the west side of Kilimanjaro. After registering at the gate (pulsory), meet your porters and begin this fantastic trek. It ll take about 2-3 hrs of trekking through dense rain forest for you to reach Forest Camp, your first nights stop. BLD Day 4. Forest Camp - Shira Camp One (3500m) Continue your trek through the rain forest and keep an eye out for the monkeys! Leaving the rain forest, the trek continues upward through a high moor with some interesting flora and fauna to see. The altitude is already beginning to get to a significant level as you head towards your second night stop at Shira Camp. Great views towards Mt Meru. 4-5 hrs, BLD Day 5. Shira Camp One - Shira Camp Two (3900m) A great day to demonstrate the history of this area and to see how vast Kilimanjaro National Park is. We take a diversion trek via the Cathedral Rock formation across the wide Shira Plateau with glorious views to Mt. Meru and Kibo. The Shira Plateau is a relict of a gigantic volcano and oldest of the three volcanos of the Kilimanjaro Massive. 6hrs, BLD Day 6. Shira Camp Two - Barranco (3950m), via the Lava Tower (4590m) A good acclimatisation day as we ascend to the well known Lava Tower for lunch (4590m, approx 4 hrs of trekking). Cracking views of where you have e from. The second half of the day is a descent back down to 3950m, where you will camp at Barranco. Right in front of you is the wonderful Barranco Wall, the first thing you will go up in the morning. 6 hrs, BLD Day 7. Barranco Karanga 4050 m This is another trek high, sleep low day with the first hour and a half ascending up through the Barranco wall. Some fantastic views once you get onto the top of this. After a short break you will walk along the old original Machame Route, descending until you arrive in the Karanga valley. It is a relatively short day but all geared to your acclimatsation. Never be tempted to skip this day and move on to Barafu. 3-4 hrs, BLD Day 8. Karanga Barafu 4650m Another short day but a very important one. The ascend to the Barafu should be taken slowly and when you do arrive, take your time to rest, drink and take an early dinner in preparation for the overnight ascent to the summit. Ensure that all of your kit is ready for the climb; snacks, water, torch, batteries, etc... Check, check and check again. 3 hrs, BLD Day 10. Barafu summit (5895m) Mweka Hut (3100m) Summit day; this is the day you have been waiting for! At approx midnight you will begin the ascent. You are likely to see lots of lights ahead of you and behind you. It is not a race, take your time to get into the climb. The initial target is Stella Point (5730m) with the summit (Uhuru) just another 40 mins away. You should reach this by sunrise. Get up to Uhuru and enjoy the view, enjoy the moment for just then, there is no human on the African Continent standing higher than you! The descent is much faster and in daylight, you will see why. The upper reaches of the mountain is made of soft ash, perfect for scree running! Once you have descended back down to Barafu, rest a little, eat, drink and then continue the long descent to Mweka Camp. Total trek time today is up to 15 hrs with a 1300m ascent. BLD Day 10. Mweka Hut Mweka Gate - Hotel From here, it s just a 3hr trek down through the rain forest to exit the park at the Mweka Gate, where you will be presented with your Certificate. Your transport will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel for a well earned rest and shower. BL Day 11. 4 page 4 Challenge Costs Jan 2019 Total Cost for your trip (includes deposit below) 2980 Payment Breakdown Deposit for all payment options Plus one of the following payment options Self funded balance * 2480 Sponsorship funded fundraising total 4960 Flexi funded additional personal contribution ** fundraising total Payment Options Explained There are 3 payment options to choose from when you sign up. With all 3, there is the initial deposit which is your personal contribution towards the cost of your challenge. This is not a fee for administration but will secure the services/flights for your trip and forms part of the overall trip cost. Self Funded This option allows you to pay the entire cost of your trip yourself. An interim payment is due 7-8 months prior to departure with the balance payment due 60 days prior to your departure. You can then make arrangements directly with your chosen charity and all money you fundraise will go directly to that charity. Sponsorship Funded You mit to raising a minimum amount of sponsorship for your chosen charity from which the remaining balance for your trip will be paid. You will be asked to plete a pledge form with the charity setting out the target dates and any guidelines required; this is a requirement of your booking. Your chosen charity will support your fundraising throughout and all sponsorship money you raise must be paid to them upon receipt. Generally, the sponsorship target is set to ensure that a minimum of 50% of the money you raise is retained by the charity. All money raised above the target will also be retained by the charity. Your fundraising target must be met, and paid to the charity, a min of 10 weeks prior to your departure date. This enables them to pay the remaining balance for your trip with no financial risk to themselves. Flexi Funded In addition to the deposit, you pay a 2nd personal contribution, 7-8 months prior to departure which reduces the fundraising target. You then mit to raising a minimum amount of sponsorship for your chosen chairty from which the remaining balance for your trip will be paid. Your financial protection * Your payment is made up of an interim payment of 800 due 7-8 months prior to departure, plus the balance payment of 1,680 which is due 60 days prior to departure. ** Your additional personal contribution is due 7-8 months prior to departure You are financially protected against our insolvency. Our ATOL Licence number is Click here to view verification. When you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight inclusive holiday from us you will receive an ATOL Certificate. This lists what is financially protected, where you can get information on what this means for you and who to contact if things go wrong. We, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, will provide you with the services listed on the ATOL Certificate (or a suitable alternative). In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with the services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable). If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. That agree that in return for such a payment of benefit you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable). You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme. Click here for Consumer Information on your ATOL protection. Many of the flights and flight-inclusive holidays in this brochure are financially protected by the ATOL scheme. But ATOL protection does not apply to all holiday and travel services listed in this brochure. Please ask us to confirm what protection may apply to your booking. If you do not receive an ATOL Certificate then the booking will not be ATOL protected. If you do receive an ATOL Certificate but all the parts of your trip are not listed on it, those parts will not be ATOL protected. Please see our booking conditions for information, or for more information
5 page 5 Your questions answered Is this challenge for me and how tough is it? You will be walking between 4-7 hours per day. Hours rather than miles or kilometers are used to measure days as the terrain varies. Temperatures during the day (sun up) will vary between 10 and 25 and the night temperatures will drop to single figures, potentially below zero. The trekking on this trek is generally moderate. It is a tented trek, with basic conditions throughout; no showers or restbite from the prevailing weather. The exception to all of this is Summit Day. It is a demanding 12-16hrs day including the 6-7 hr climb to the summit. It is highly likely to be below zero for the entire duration of the climb (which begins at about midnight) as well as being dark with potential wind and rain for pany if the weather is unkind. The altitude is also a serious consideration. Despite sufficient acclimatisation, it is a 1300m ascent to the summit, which is just short of 20,000 feet. You will need mental and physical endurance and a degree of robustness to undertake this trip and we would remend a good level of fitness. After booking, you will be asked to plete an Emergency Details Form which will include your medical history. If we have any doubts about your ability to take part in the challenge, we may ask you to provide a letter of fitness from your GP, therefore we would remend that if you have any concerns, you speak to your GP prior to booking. What is a typical day like on trek? You will need to be ready for the hearty breakfast with bags packed (ready for the porters) by 7am and underway by 8am. There are regular breaks during trekking and you will be encouraged to trek at a slow pace due to the altitude. Lunch is a pack up, probably a stop of about an hour. A few more hours trekking in the afternoon will take you to your night stop. Tea/coffee/biscuits are on offer on arrival in camp. The evening meal follows and it won t be long before you retired after a good day s trekking. Remember, Kilimanjaro is just 300km from the equator so year round the daylight/night hours are about 12 hrs each. What will the food be like? All of your meals are prepared freshly by our skilled camp chefs. All food is carried from the start to finish; there are re-supply facilities. Options for breakfast vary from cereals, porridge, pancakes, toast, eggs, etc...hot drinks. Lunch is usually packed; bread, biscuits, pancakes, cake, fresh salad and a drink. Coffee/tea/snack on arrival in camp. Evening meal - soup, potatoes, pasta, rice, vegetables, fruit, hot drinks. If you like additional snacks such as chocolate bars, arrange that as part of the your overall kit. What about special dietary requirements? Virtually all individual dietary requirements can be catered for if you let us know in advance. Can I travel on my own? Yes! Our Open Challenge trips are available to anyone wishing to join, either as a group or as an individual. Groups form close bonds even if they have never met before the challenge, which makes our trips such a huge success with those taking part and leads to lifelong friendships. In some situations, it s also possible to join one of our closed groups challenges if the charity and the group are open to additional members. There is no harm in asking! What will the acmodation be like? Moshi - We use an excellent low rise Lodge on the outskirts of Moshi. The hotel owners are lovely people and it is equipped with a bar, restuarant, laundry and safe deposit boxes. In the Hills - good quality 2/3 man tents with sleeping mats. There is a kitchen tent, dining tent and toilet tent. Washing facilities will be a warm bowl of water. There are no showers. What do you mean by Early Guarantee Status? Unlike many panies, we will guarantee a trip with numbers as low as 2 people, even if they are two independent travellers. This means that from a very early stage you can fundraise and make your travel plans, safe in the knowledge that your trip will not be cancelled at a late stage due to minimum numbers not being reached. We have organised many trips at the last minute for people who have achieved their fundraising total, only to find that the trip is cancelled by other panies two months before they are due to depart due to insuffcient numbers. We know how vital this assurance is. How big are your groups? Our average group size 4-8, however we can acmodate much smaller or larger groups if required. Can I extend my stay? As long as you let us know at the time of booking, we can adjust your outbound or return flights so that you can enjoy some additional time in country. We don t make any charge for this adjustment and as long as your revised dates are not affected by increase flight prices, the cost will remain the same. If you would like to extend and discuss the options with us then we re more than happy to help. Some suggestions: Head for the Safari Parks for a few days. A few relaxing days in Zanzibar. This exotic Indian Ocean island lies just off the coast and it s an easy short domestic flight to get there. Perfect for recouperation after a Kili climb!
6 page 6 Your questions answered KILIMANJARO LEMOSHO CHARITY Will I have to pay a single supplement? Not unless you request sole occupation. Generally, all acmodation is on a twin/triple share, same-sex basis. We will pair you with another member of the group. If you wish to be paired with someone specific within the group, just let us know. If you decide that you would like to have your own hotel room and perhaps tent too, we can acmodate this and an additional fee will be applicable and payable personally. Please indicate your preference on the booking form. If you do not indicate that you wish to have sole occupation and you happen to be the odd one out, then you will be acmodated on your own at no additonal cost. Requested Sole Occupation fee for this Challenge: 80 What about Tipping? Tipping trekking crews is customary as a way of saying thank you for good service but in Tanzania, it does form part of their wages and therefore is a little more stringent. This subject is covered in far more detail in the Challenge Manual but for budgeting purposes prior to sign up, you should budget for this. When is the best time to go? In the dry season, which is the summer months of Jun - Oct and Dec - Mar. You can climb Kilimanjaro throughout the year but cleary the weather conditions vary enormously. Can I book if I m travelling from overseas? Yes. If you live outside the UK then please contact us and we will be able to make arrangements for you to meet us in country on a Land Only basis or connect with our flights from the UK. Can we book as a private group? Yes. All of our challenges can be booked for a private group either through the charity of your choice or as an independent group of friends fundraising for one or more charities. You will have the option to choose dates to suit and also amend the itinerary to either lengthen or shorten your trip as required. Can I choose any charity? You can choose your charity when booking onto an open challenge or if you are booking as a group. We work with many of the large as well as smaller charities which are local, national and internationally based. Before your booking can be processed, we need confirmation from your chosen charity which we will organise on your behalf. Please be aware that some larger charities will now only accept self funded challenges. How soon should I book? / How long to fundraise? We would always advise that you book your challenge as soon as possibe (many opt to book a year in advance) to allow plenty of time for fundraising. Fundraising target dates are 10 weeks before departure. That said, if flights and the trip you are interested in still have availability, you can book at any time, particularly if you are choosing the self funded payment method. If you want to book onto a specific challenge then we would always advise that you contact us first to discuss the funding options in relation to the timescale before departure. How do I book? A Charity Challenge is one of the most rewarding events you can take part in. Once you decide what you want to do and and when you would like to go, the next thing is to decide which charity you would like to fundraise for. We would even suggest that you contact us to have a chat about the challenge and in particular if you are taking on a sponsorship method so that we can contact the charity to seek their approval for the funding. Before booking any challenge, we would remend that you thoroughy check through our booking conditions as acceptance is a requirement of your booking. Once approval is in place, we will issue you with: The charity pledge form. Our booking form - available on line or to download. These forms should be returned to us together with your deposit. Those who are self funding can plete the booking form and forward it to us with their deposit. How to Pay can be found on the Booking Page. What happens after I book? Once we receive your pleted booking, we will issue you with a confirmation letter, ATOL certificate, receipt invoice, the Challenge Manual and details of any retail discounts available to our clients. You will also be provided with a link to the client area of our web site. Here you will be able to access our required forms, and infomartion which will help you prepare for your challenge.
