3 Travel information (4 days / 3nights) Price includes online check-in, hand luggage and hold luggage. Departure 14 th July 2017 (Friday) Return 17 th July 2017 (Monday) *Coach will be booked to the airport and from the airport once the trip has been confirmed, which will be an additional cost).

(1GBP 207 Ikr) Swimwear, towel and 100ml shampoo/conditioner for our trip to the Blue Lagoon. Any personal belongings (mobiles, ipads etc )are not the responsibility of staff and damages will not be liable to staff. Brought at own risk. 6 Ensure all electronic devices are charged for the flight! Important Current ABTA Advice re: Enhanced airport security measures from 9th July 2014 Due to new security requirements introduced on 2/7/14, ABTA recommends that customers ensure all electronic devices taken on board a flight in hand luggage, are fully charged before departing from home and on their return journey. The Department for Transport has advised that these additional security measures will affect some routes into and out of the UK, they have not specified which routes, so customers on all international flights should be prepared. If you are unable to demonstrate that your phone or other electronic device can be switched on, you risk having to leave the device at the airport, which may also result in you missing your flight. Many airports now have charging facilities at the airport but demand for these will be intense particularly at this time of the year. Customers are also advised to switch on their electronic devices before they reach the security check areas to cut down on potential delays."

7 Weather and climate Expect temperatures around 10ºC at night and 12ºC during daytime. Weather can be changeable so layers are advisable. The sun sets in July at around midnight and rises at about 3 in the morning. It might be advisable to bring some sunglasses.

8 Itinerary - Day 1 Land get on coach. Then, onto the Blue Lagoon. The blue-green is algae and white silica mud give the lagoon its milky, aquamarine colour and provide a natural source of therapeutic minerals. Take a dip and try it for yourself! Head to accommodation to settle in for the evening. Meal.

9 The Blue Lagoon Set in a black lava field, the milkyblue spa is fed by water (at a perfect 30 C) from the futuristic Svartsengi geothermal plant. The super-heated sea water is rich in blue-green algae, mineral salts and fine silica mud.

10 Itinerary Day 2 09:00 Excursion Golden Circle Daytrip TOPIC AREA: Plate Tectonics Today, you will walk along a plate boundary, and witness the explosive effects of plate tectonics at Geysir! Visit Nesjavellir The tour starts with a visit to Nesjavellir, a high temperature geothermal area in the scenic landscape of Lake Þingvallavatn. Visit Þingvellir National Park The Mid-Atlantic Ridge the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates is clearly visible here. Gaze with awe at the line where Iceland is slowly being pulled apart. Meal Packed lunch You will be provided with a packed lunch to eat on the coach.

11 Itinerary Day 2 Visit Gullfoss Waterfall Gullfoss waterfall consists of two steps of 11m and 20m, each made of hard volcanic rock that resists erosion. On a sunny day the glacial meltwater tumbling down the 32m chasm truly looks golden! Visit Geysir Look out for Strokkur geyser, a very active fountain geyser which shoots boiling water up to 40 metres into the air every 5 minutes! 17:00 Approx Arrive Hotel Meal Dinner at accommodation

12 Gullfoss Iceland s most famous waterfall. It has a spectacular double cascade with a 32 metre drop into a mile-long gorge. Gullfoss it at it best in early summer when the Hvitas feeder glaciers upstream are first melting.

13 Þingvellir National Park Þingvellir, anglicised as Thingvellir, is a national park in the municipality of Bláskógabyggð in southwestern Iceland, about 40 km northeast of Reykjavík.

14 Geysir Geysir, sometimes known as The Great Geysir, is a geyser in southwestern Iceland. It was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans. The English word geyser derives from Geysir.

15 Nesjavellir Power Station The Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Station is the second-largest geothermal power station in Iceland. The facility is located 177 m above sea level in the southwestern part of the country, near Thingvellir and the Hengill Volcano

16 Itinerary - Day 3 09:00 Excursion South Shore Daytrip TOPIC AREA: Fluvial, Glacial and Coastal Processes Visit Iceland's spectacular South Shore, and see the impact of waterfalls, glaciers and waves on the landscape! Visit Seljalandsfoss Waterfall Take your group to see one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. At Seljalandsfoss, it is possible to walk behind the cascade via a footpath at its base. Visit Skógafoss Waterfall Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland! In the distance you will see the country's most notorious volcanic glacier, Eyjafjallajokull. Meal Packed lunch You will be provided with a packed lunch.

17 Itinerary - Day 3 Visit Reynisfjara Beach Walk along this ethereal black sand beach and admire the striking basalt formations. Legend has it that the stacks are trolls who tried to drag a ship to land, but were turned to stone as day broke. Visit Sólheimajökull Glacier At Sólheimajökull, students can clearly see the dynamics that shape the movement, volume and shape of glaciers. Unfortunately, the most striking feature of Sólheimajökull is how fast it is receding! Visit Vík Vík is a clear example of Living with Natural Hazards: the village lies directly beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Katla volcano, so all of its 300 inhabitants are well-trained in evacuation! 20:00 Approx Arrive Hotel Meal Dinner at accommodation

18 Skógafoss Waterfall A waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward (it is now at a distance of about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Skógar), the former sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometres, creating together with some mountains a clear border between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland.

19 Seljalandsfoss waterfall Seljalandsfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland. Seljalandsfoss is located in the South Region in Iceland right by Route 1 and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249

20 Reynisfjara Beach Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village Vík í Mýrdal, southern Iceland which is framed by a black sand beach that was ranked in 1991 as one of the ten most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world. Legend says that the stacks originated when two trolls dragged a three-masted ship to land unsuccessfully and when daylight broke they became needles of rock. Contemporary legends note the story of a husband who found his wife taken by the two trolls, frozen at night. The husband made the two trolls swear to never kill anyone ever again. His wife was the love of his life, whose free spirit he was unable to provide a home for; she found her fate out among the trolls, rocks, and sea at Reynisfjara.

21 Sólheimajökull glacier The Sólheimajökull glacier tongue extends from the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier, down to the sandy plains of the Icelandic south coast. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and majestic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. On this fun, safe, and easy to moderate glacier walk, you get to explore the wonderland of ice sculptures, water cauldrons, ridges, and deep crevasses on the breathtaking Sólheimajökull glacier. While enjoying all the features of the glacier and its spectacular surroundings, you will learn more about the behavior of glaciers and their impact on nature. No technical requirements are needed for the tour as an experienced glacier guide will teach you how to use basic glacier equipment, such as crampons and an ice axe which are provided for all our glacier walk tours. The unique experience of a glacier walk on one of the many retreating glaciers of the world is sure to leave lasting memories.

22 Vik The village of Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the main ring road around the island, around 180 km by road southeast of Reykjavík.

25 Kit Swim wear and swimming towel (packed in hand luggage) Walking boots / shoes they should have a strong grip to cope with the conditions which may be muddy, icy or loose moraine/ground Walking socks, at least 2/3 pairs Layers of clothing, thermal t-shirt and long johns (optional), long sleeved t-shirts, jumpers, fleece Waterproof outer clothing jacket and over trousers Trousers jeans and lightweight trousers for travel and evening activities. However alternative lightweight walking trousers are essential for daytime activities as jeans are inappropriate if they get cold and wet

26 Warm hat and gloves Sunglasses, sunscreen and Insect repellent A rucksack, for field equipment and lunch Indoors: The accommodation is warm and comfortable so normal clothes and trainers for inside are fine. Travel slippers or slipper socks are useful too for indoors Other Personal Items: European adaptors are suitable for the plugs in Iceland. Mobile phones may be taken at pupils own risk. 27 Food and Dietary Requirements All food will be provided during the trip. Breakfast and packed lunches will provided by the hotel accommodation. Pupils may wish to pack additional snacks to supplement their packed lunches. Evening meals will be catered for. If you have a specific dietary requirements, please let us know ASAP.

28 Medical Requirements If pupils have a medical condition that the school doesn t already know about please let us know asap. If anyone carries an EpiPen, insulin or other self-administered medication, they must obtain a prescription or doctor s certificate before travel to ease passing through security at the airport. The travel company always pass the information to hotels regarding allergies and dietary requirements.

29 Questions? It is open to 30 students to keep costs down if we do not get enough interest the trip will not run. Year 10 and Year 9 will be invited.
