CAMP TRACY Celebrating 99 Years of Scouting ( ) EXPERIENCE CAMP TRACY 2018 LEADERS GUIDE

Camp Tracy By Marcus Mayfield (11 Year-old Scout) June 21 st, 2013 the 11 year old Boy Scouts for the Wells Stake, Scorpions Patrol (Daniel, Thomas, Kaulin, D angelo, Nephi, Issac, Josh, Austin and me) went to Camp Tracy in Millcreek Canyon. We spent three days there at the New Scout Camp for 11 year olds. We went to Scout camp to learn and earn rank advancements. We had an opening ceremony where we did the pledge of allegiance, a couple of skits and we started our day. Truman was our guide and he was funny and helpful. We all liked him. First we went to practice flag ceremonies. I led the flag ceremony and we all had turns to participate. After that we went to the rock climbing wall. I almost got to the top. Everyone went but Thomas. We all cheered for Bro. Hermann, one of our adult leaders, when he climbed to the top. We bought popcorn at the trading post and I bought a dog tag and some candy. We went to map and compass and I thought that was a bit boring. We had lunch. I ate my sandwich, chips and an apple under the trees with my patrol. We went rifle shooting. We shot.22 rifles. I almost hit a bullseye. Then we did archery. I didn t do so well on that. All of us were interested in getting the archery merit badge. Our leader got to shoot the long bow and she did great. We built a fire and played some fun games. Then we went home. The next day we went swimming. I almost earned my swimmers badge. We all got a token that showed what good swimmers we were to use on the buddy board when we went canoeing. We went canoeing on Taylor Lake. I was really good at it and we didn t get splashed at. We learned lashing and hitches. My hitches were very tight. Our guides, Shades, told us stories to help us learn the hitches. We all earned the Toten Chip. I loved using the hatchet. We went to Nature and learned about the birds, plants and animals. During free time we did rescues in the pool. At the end of the day we set up camp. We were at site #7. We had hot dogs and burgers for dinner that we cooked. After dinner we told scary stories and then we went to bed. In the evening we went to the Honor Trail and they told us the Scout Oath and what it means. We walked around Taylor Lake and the counselors talked with us. The next morning Thomas and I made pancake while the other scouts were messing around trying to warm up. Then they got up and help cook. We put our tents down and cleaned up the campsite. We need to leave no trace. The rest of the day was free time. We did the map and compass course and that was fun. We found most of the numbers on the course along the trail that was marked with red reflectors and numbers. Our patrol did a service project. We leveled the steps that led to the lashing area. We all got shovels and worked hard. We practiced flag ceremonies again. We went canoeing, did archery and I did better this time, and then we had a closing ceremony. Our patrol earned the Honor Patrol award. Only two patrols earned the Honor Patrol Award. We tied the ribbon on to the Scorpion Patrol flag. We ate lunch and then went home. In conclusion we had a fun time at camp. Because of this first camp I am now almost a First Class scout.

Welcome to Camp Tracy Summer Camp! Why We Are Here? Our program is designed to meet the needs of new Scouts (i.e. those who have not yet earned the First Class Rank). 5 Before Camp PATROL METHOD Before coming to camp you should organize your boys into a patrol. (If you have more than ten boys they should be divided into two patrols.) The patrol method, Scouting s method for working in teams, will be used at camp. Each patrol will need to have a patrol leader, patrol name, patrol yell, and patrol flag. More information on patrols can be found in the Boy Scout Handbook. In is suggested that patrol leaders receive Troop Leadership Training before coming to camp. DRESS & UNIFORMING It is important that participants are properly attired for camp. Prepare for the elements (long sleeved-shirts and hats for the sun; sturdy, closed toe shoes for the rough terrain; jackets or sweaters for cool mornings or evenings; lightweight poncho for rain). Remember: Be Prepared. The camp experience is enhanced when Scouts and leaders wear the uniform. The field uniform (Scout shirt with Scout pants or shorts) is appropriate for our evening campfire and Honor trail. The activity uniform (patrol t-shirts with Scout pants or shorts) is appropriate for most camp activities. This year units may pre-purchase Camp Tracy activity uniform tee shirt. Shirts will be available in a variety of colors and may be imprinted with your troop number and/or patrol name. Call the camp desk or camp director for more information. The uniform builds unity and instills pride. Uniforms should be clean, in good condition and tucked in (unless there is a health concern). Make the uniform as uniform as possible. Inexpensive additions (neckerchiefs, patrol patches, hats) are helpful. Come with the sharpest looking, most complete uniform you have, but remember that the boy is more important than the uniform. CAMP FEES $65 Weekday Session (Monday - Wednesday) $75 Weekend Session (Thursday -Saturday) Leaders attend free There is a $30 deposit per boy to camp- refundable up to two weeks before camp. A late fee of $5 per person will be charged for late registrations TO AVOID FORFEITING CAMP FEES, WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE UNITS TO OBTAIN FIRM COMMITMENTS FROM LEADERS, SCOUTS, AND THEIR FAMILIES PRIOR TO PAYING FEES. 5

REQUIRED FORMS The following form are required for each patrol at check-in. Two rosters of the youth attending camp. One will be turned in at check-in, the other will be retained by leaders. For your convenience, these forms are included at the back of this guide. Photocopy and distribute them as needed. SIMPLIFYING CHECK-IN Pay all camp fees before arriving at camp and as early as possible. Register all boys with the BSA prior to coming to camp. (Your district commissioner or executive can assist you. Call ) Have your forms collated by form, not by boy. They should be in this order. 1. Pre-checked troop roster 2. Financial form (receipt) 3. 7 LEAVE NO TRACE Camp Tracy follows the seven principles of Leave No Trace. Please review and practice these principles with your Scouts and use them in your planning. Learn more about teaching Leave No Trace principles at PERSONAL GEAR The camp experience is enhanced when Scouts bring the appropriate personal gear hat, sunscreen, water bottle, compass, daypack, etc. Leaders need to instruct Scouts on what is appropriate and how to care for those items. The care and safekeeping of all personal items is the responsibility of the Scout. First Day of Camp ARRIVAL AND PARKING Camp Tracy s parking lot entrance is gate G (on the right side of the road, just past the Tracy Training Center gate). First day arrival time is 7:45 a.m. Our check-in process is simple and quick so arrival before 7:45 a.m. is not recommended. Our staff will direct you to a parking spot. As a safety precaution, vehicles will be backed into parking spots. Do not block any roadways. Leave your lunches and swimsuits in your car until after you have checked in. Because parking is limited, carpooling is strongly encouraged and utility trailers are strong discouraged. CHECK-IN Our staff will greet and direct you. Check-in begins at 7:50 a.m. Leaders and boys proceed to the amphitheater for the opening ceremony. One leader (with paperwork) will proceed to the check-in area. Please make sure you organize your forms according to type, not according to each boy. (ex. All the climbing forms together, medical forms together etc.) ADULTS MUST WEAR A WRISTBAND AT ALL TIMES. THEY ARE DURABLE AND CAN BE WORN IN THE POOL. IF AN ADULT LOSES A WRISTBAND, THEY SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT THE COMMISSIONER STAFF FOR A REPLACEMENT. LATE ARRIVALS AND VISITORS MUST CHECK IN AT THE OFFICE AND OBTAIN A WRISTBAND. Our check-in staff will provide you with and orient you to the following Camp and Activity Schedule Camp Map Advancement Skill Tracking Sheet Swim Check Tracking Sheet 7

Our staff will collect and process the following paperwork Pre-checked troop roster PLEASE REMEMBER THAT CHECK-IN GOES Financial form (receipt) FASTER IF YOU HAVE YOUR FORMS COLLATED BY Medical forms FORM TYPE, NOT BY BOY. Parental Informed Consent Agreement Our staff will also ask you about the following Early Departures. We need to know who is coming to pick up the Scout and what relationship the person is to him. Special Needs. Scouts with special needs, please let us know so we can assist you and your Scout. OPENING CEREMONY The opening ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. each morning and is held in the amphitheater behind the trading post. Patrols will participate in a flag ceremony; enjoy the songs and skits and receive instructions for the day. ACTIVITY AREAS The first two days of camp, Scouts will follow a set schedule. Patrols will receive a schedule and map at check-in. Junior staff will be instructing in most activity areas. Patrol leaders have the responsibility to keep their patrol members engaged and on task. Adult leaders should allow the staff and patrol leaders to do their jobs, leading from the shadows. Patrols will be asked to give their patrol yell at the beginning of each activity. Remember: Be Prepared. SAFETY CONCERNS Safety is job #1 at Camp Tracy. Staff, Scouts and leaders are asked to observe the high standards of safety found in the National Camp Standards, Guide to Safe Scouting, policies of the Great Salt Lake Council and Camp Tracy. Areas of special concern include the following: Shooting and Archery Ranges Camp Tracy s ranges are staffed by mature, responsible adults who are NRA and BSA certified. They are very safety conscious. Scouts are required to listen and follow the instructions of the instructors and range safety officer if they wish to participate. Adult leaders are asked to support the range safety officer and instructor in their efforts to keep the boys safe. Swimming Pool and Taylor Lake Camp Tracy s pool and lake are operated by mature, responsible adults who are BSA certified Aquatics Directors. Our lifeguards are Red Cross certified; they are very safety conscious. Scouts are required to listen and follow the instructions and requests of the directors and lifeguards it they wish to participate. Adult leaders are asked to support them in their efforts to keep the boys safe. A special concern is leaders who push boys to swim check in a group beyond their capacity. Please trust our staff to do their job helping the boys find their ability levels. Climbing Wall Camp Tracy s climbing director is a mature, responsible adult who is BSA certified. As with our other specialty areas, Scouts and leaders are required to hear and follow the climbing staff instructions if they wish to participate. Adult Responsibility All Scouts and Scouters are responsible for safety at camp. However, adults have a special role. While we want staffers and patrol leaders to have the freedom to do their 8

jobs in a boy-led program, adults are expected to intervene in any situation they believe may compromise the safety of a staffer, Scout, or leader. Staffers and Scouts are expected to defer to any adult with a safety concern. Staffers, Scouts and leaders have a responsibility to report any safety concerns, near misses or accidents to camp administration (commissioner, program director, or camp director) immediately. ADVANCEMENT Camp Tracy staffers are instructed in the use of the EDGE teaching system. In the time allotted, they will have time to explain, demonstrate and give some guided practice in the Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class requirements. Scouts may or may not master the skill while in that activity area. Leaders have the responsibility to review their Scouts progress and to sign off rank requirements as appropriate. Our instructors are not unit leaders and cannot pass off requirements. The exceptions to this rule are that our range officers can sign off on a target for the rifle shooting merit badge requirements and the blue card for the archery merit badge requirements. Because of time restraints we will not be able to cover every rank requirement in the book. We would rather offer high quality instruction on fewer requirements than poor instruction on many requirements. Please check the advancement tracking sheet for information on which requirements will be offered in the various areas. SWIMMING If Scouts will dress quickly (both while entering and exiting the pool) and follow the directions of the instructors and lifeguards, they should have time to practice rescue throws, receive swimming instruction or just recreate. Scouts may also return to the pool during open program time on the Second and Third day of camp for swimming instruction, guided practice or to play. If possible, have one of your leaders come prepared to enter the pool and assist the pool staff in administering the test. (Please note the important note under SAFETY CONCERNS above.) Instruct your Scouts to change in and out of their swimming suits as quickly as possible. Dawdling may cost them the opportunity to participate or make them late to their next activity. We suggest you place all your members swimming gear (suits and towels) in one bag. This will allow you to leave the bag in your car until just before your group heads for swimming and to return it to the car as soon as you are finished. Separate changing facilities will be provided for youth, adult men, adult women and those requiring special assistance from a parent or guardian. PATROL TIME Built into each group s schedule is a patrol time slot. This time slot allows time for the patrols in the group to visit the trading post, participate in some additional activities outside the regular activity time or to just relax and enjoy nature. Skits can also be presented to the program staff for approval during this time. Leaders are responsible to manage their Scouts during this time. LEADERS MEETING The commissioner will hold a brief leaders meeting at 10:00 a.m. at the amphitheater behind the trading post. One adult from each patrol should attend this meeting. All information regarding campsites and camping logistics will be given out at this meeting on day two. 9

LUNCH There are two lunch times. One is from 11:40 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. The other is from 12:20 p.m. to 1:00. The schedule you receive at check-in will indicate your lunch time. Units are responsible for their own meals. Patrols are free to gather anywhere except in the pool, waterfront, shooting ranges or staff area (tables immediately around the camp office). The trading post is open during lunch. EMERGENCY DRILL In case of a camp wide emergency, an air horn will sound three times. If this happens, everyone needs to report immediately to the amphitheater which is located behind the trading post. At 2:55 p.m. on the first day, a practice emergency drill will be held. Please stay in your activity areas until you hear the siren sound. At this time, you will be directed to the Camp Tracy amphitheater behind the trading post where roll call will be taken. CLOSING CERMONY Immediately following the emergency drill, a short closing ceremony will be held in the amphitheater. Camp will be dismissed immediately following the closing ceremony. You should be on your way home around 3:15 p.m. Second Day of Camp ARRIVAL AND PARKING Second day arrival time is 7:45 a.m. Our check-in process is simple and quick so arrival before 7:45 a.m. is not recommended. Camp Tracy s parking lot entrance is gate G (just past the Tracy Training Center gate). On the second day it is even more important that you carpool and consolidate your loads. Utility trailers are discouraged. If our lot fills, you will be directed to an overflow parking lot on the canyon road, across from Gate H. If you are directed to the overflow lot, you will be instructed to have at least one leader and the boys exit the vehicle and take lunches and swimsuits before the vehicle heads up the canyon. Do not block any roadways. Leave your lunches and swimsuits in your car until after you have checked in. (Please note the above mentioned exception if you are directed to Gate H). CHECK-IN One leader will proceed directly to the check-in table to report on the number of youth and adults camping over and to check in any new boys or leaders. You will also report any special circumstances or needs relative to your overnight stay. The other leader(s) will take the youth to the amphitheater. They are invited to visit the trading post along the way. OPENING CEREMONY The opening ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. and is held in the amphitheater behind the trading post. 10

PATROL CAMP TIME 5:00 p.m. to 7:25 p.m. is patrol time. Patrols will set up camp; prepare and eat dinner; and clean up. If parents or other guests are invited to visit camp, they should check in at the Tracy Lodge (next to Taylor Lake) and receive a wrist band. OVERNIGHT CAMPING POLICIES Please review and observe the following overnight camping procedures and policies. They are designed to make the overnight camping experience as safe and enjoyable as possible. Your unit will be assigned a campsite and unload time at the leaders meeting on Day 2. Please let us know if you have any special needs when you check in on Day 2. Unloading times will be between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Staggering the unload times over a 90 minute period allows vehicles to enter, unload and exit more easily. Vehicles will enter the camping area through Gate I and will exit through Gate I. No vehicles are allowed to exit through the program areas. For your convenience, Gate I will remain open until 7 p.m., but it is expected you will unload and return you vehicles to the parking lot as soon as possible (preferably by 5 p.m.) All vehicles must be out of camp and Gate I secured before we start our Campfire Program. Please be courteous and make sure your vehicle is out of the camping areas as soon as possible. No fires are allowed in campsites. This includes charcoal. Propane stoves are the only method of cooking allowed at Camp Tracy. Propane campfire rings are allowed if they are at least 18 inches off the ground. We follow the seven principles of Leave No Trace at Camp Tracy. Please review and practice these principles with your Scouts and plan accordingly. All Scouts and Scouters are to observe lights out at 10 p.m. However, it is expected that all Scouts and Scouters will be on their best behavior and respectful of other campers at all times. Gate I will reopen to vehicles at 6:30 a.m. Units camping in program areas must have the area cleaned and vacated by 8:00 a.m. on Day 3. All other campsites sites must be cleaned and vacated by 9:00 a.m. on Day 3. All garbage is to be packed out. CAMPFIRE PROGRAM Our camp-wide campfire program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the fire bowl next to the Tracy Lodge. The program will consist of skits and songs by select patrols; stories, skits, songs and presentations by our staff. Campfire begins as a fun, playful event and progresses to a reverent and patriotic conclusion that prepares the Scouts for our sacred honor trail. The leaders job is to help the boys enjoy the fun and feel the reverence as appropriate. 12

The campfire will not begin until the commissioner staff reports that all vehicles have been removed from the camp and returned to the parking lots and that Gate I has been secured. Please be courteous and make sure your vehicle is out on time. Honor Trail will begin immediately following Campfire. Please remain seated quietly until excused for Honor Trail. HONOR TRAIL Honor Trail is a reverent experience in which members of the Camp Tracy staff present the values of Scouting. For many young Scouts this is the first time they have had peers share these values. It can be a positive and inspiring experience. Please help your Scouts be reverent (quiet and attentive) during the presentation of the Honor trail. The presentation is made as Scouts take a guided hike around Taylor Lake. It is a mostly level and smooth walk and most Scouts should have no problem navigating the trail. If you have Scouts who might have difficulty or require assistance, please notify the commissioner in advance and effort will be made to provide accommodation. At the conclusion of the Honor Trail, you will be instructed to return quietly to your campsite. Please help your Scouts maintain the reverent feeling as they proceed back to camp. If appropriate, you may wish to talk with your Scouts about their Honor Trail experience. Third Day of Camp OVERVIEW Day 3 is three hours of open program time and special activities for the boys. At the end of the day we will have a closing and awards ceremony. Camp will conclude by 12:00 p.m. OPENING CEREMONY There will be an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in the amphitheater. OPEN PROGRAM TIME 8:45 a.m. to 11:25 p.m. is open program time. In addition to the regular activity areas, all of the open time activities offered on the afternoon of day two will still be open. (See Open Program Time above.) There are two unique activities offered on the morning of day 3. 5-Mile Hike The 5-Mile hike passes through a portion of the Mt. Olympus Wilderness Area which means that there is a group size limit of 10 (including staff and adults). We are able to take up to four groups on this hike depending on our staffing. Please be aware that we must stick to this limit. Participants will also have the opportunity to ear the Mt. Olympus Wilderness segment of the UWCNF Experience the Wilderness patch set. One leader from each participating unit must accompany his boys on the hike. Hikers meet at the trading post at 8:15 a.m. The hike takes about hours and will occupy all of the participants open time on Day 3. Units must sign up for the hike, in advance, at the camp office. Scouts need to take a hat, sun screen and at least 2 liters of drinking water for the hike. A hiking staff and compass are recommended. After the hike please stop by the office to complete your patch requirements and receive the Mt. Olympus patch. 13

Ga-Ga Ball tournament Teams of 4 compete to see who is the best of the best at Camp Tracy. Winners get to sign their names on the Camp Tracy Ga-ga ball champions flag. LUNCH There is no scheduled lunch time on Day 3. CLOSING CEREMONY Camp will conclude, at 11:30 a.m., with a brief closing ceremony. Honor troop ribbons will be presented at that time and the Ga-ga ball champions will be announced. We will also present the camp rifle champion award and go through the lost and found. Please plan on attending the closing ceremony. We will not be able to get your awards to you if you are not present. CHECK OUT After the closing ceremonies a packet will be waiting for you at the check-in table. This packet will include your medical forms, Camp Tracy patches, and canyon passes. Also, please check the lost and found (chest on the back porch of the trading post) for any lost articles. Units leaving early will be responsible for picking up their packets from the office. Other Important Information BATHROOM AND HANDWASHING FACILITIES The flushing toilets in the adult dressing rooms at the swimming pool and in the Tracy Lodge are for adult use only. Scouts are to use the KYBOs located throughout camp. Please check with the commissioner staff if you have Scouts with special needs. KYBOs are pumped, cleaned and stocked regularly. If there are any problems, please let the commissioners staff know immediately. Hand washing stations are available next to each set of KYBOs. They are stocked with soap (in a nylon sock tied to the station) and cleaned regularly. Scouts will dry their hands using the open air system. There is a water bib located between the archery and rifle range where it is recommended that Scouts rinse their hands after participating in the rifle shooting activity. WATER Water bibs are located throughout the camp. The water is treated and safe for drinking and cooking. Please be sure the Scouts know the location of these bibs and use them to stay hydrated. In the case of a loss of pressure, water stations will be established. LOST AND FOUND Lost and found is located in the trading post. Please check there if you find or lose an item. On the last day of camp, right after closing ceremony, the lost and found box will be placed on the back porch of the trading post. Please check the box for any missing items, but do not shop the box. Lost items will be held for three days and will then be donated to a local thrift store. FIRST AID 14

Leaders are responsible for the initial first aid for the boys in their unit. Please plan on bringing a first aid kit for your unit and treating minor injuries yourself. Each of our staff members has been trained in basic first aid and will act as a resource if you need help. More serious injuries should be reported to the office immediately. The office is a quick walk from any point in camp and radios are available at the climbing tower, the lake and the pool. A medical officer will be dispatched to determine the best course of action. BAD WEATHER PROCEEDURE Camp will be held regardless of the weather except for lightning. Should a thunderstorm arise while camp is in session Please take cover in the nearest enclosed building and follow the instructions of the staff. Activities may resume again once no thunder has been heard for a period of at least 30 minutes. The staff will do their best to continue instruction during the time you are waiting out the storm. Please make sure to check the forecast before attending camp and prepare accordingly. The forecast for Camp Tracy can be found here: &lat= #.WDNaF9IrKig EMERGENCY CONTACT Cell phone service is very spotty in the canyon and should not be relied upon for emergency calls. Most cell phones begin working well at the mouth of the canyon near Wasatch Blvd. The best method for calling in and out of camp is the land line. This line is available for adults to make outgoing calls and a staff member is assigned to man the phone during the hours camp is in operation. Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Day 2, the landline will be available at the Tracy Lodge. Those making calls into the camp need to realize that the line is a party line shared with Webelos camp. Webelos camp is instructed to answer on the first four rings. If the call is for Camp Tracy, the caller will be asked to redial and Camp Tracy answers on the fifth ring. Make sure that all those who may need to call the camp (parents, spouses, etc.) are aware of your troop number and leaders name so that we can more easily locate your unit in the case of a call. OUT OF BOUNDS AREAS To help control erosion and to keep campers safe, the following rules have been established. Stay on the established trails (especially when hiking the mountain). Hiking or playing on the creek bank or in the creek is prohibited at all times. Hiking or playing on the hillsides that border the camp is prohibited at all times. TRADING POST The trading post sells souvenirs, snacks, drinks, apparel, and Scout themed items. Cash, debit cards and credit cards are readily accepted at camp.
