Surviving Everest Klondike Derby & Deep Freeze February 17-19, 2017 This year Battlefield District and Indian Rock District takes a page from Schenectady District, Twin Rivers Council in New York. For over 50 years Schenectady has conducted a snowy Klondike Derby under tough conditions (even double digits below zero). Over 40 patrols compete each year and come back for more. Patrols face the same winter survival events each January. With practice and preparation, their skills improve yearly. Adult leaders can document cases where lives have been saved by the skills learned at the Klondike. Boys brave enough to sleep in tents earn an award for facing the "Deep Freeze." Thank you, Schenectady, for the inspiration! Our theme is "Surviving Everest." If your troop was invited on the expedition, how would you began to prepare? Read on for some ideas... Klondike Derby: Prepare for major challenges! Your patrols will face survival challenges that anyone climbing Mount Everest might face. By planning, practicing, and preparing, your Scouts will compete strongly with others and gain confidence on the way. Each patrol will have to complete and pass a challenge at each base camp in order to continue on their journey. They will be scored at each base camp and first place ribbons will be awarded for each base camp as well as an overall grand champion trophy that will be awarded at the campfire. Something New: Rather than being surprised by Klondike challenges, your Scouts will know exactly what they are facing. They can study and practice for each event beforehand. In fact, a motivated troop might conduct a "Trial Klondike" some Saturday and work through each challenge in advance. Scouts can achieve a number of rank requirements by working through the skills necessary to succeed at the Klondike. The BSA Handbook will be your prime reference. Most of the challenges are designed to strengthen survival skills that will stick with boys for life. Deep Freeze: No one climbs Mount Everest without sleeping in tents under extreme conditions. To build confidence in winter camping, a special "Snowball" award with be presented to each Scout or adult who sleeps in an unheated tent at least one night during the Klondike. If that night happens to be Saturday night, awards will be entrusted in advance to the Scoutmaster. Troops staying in cabins can participate by setting up tents nearby and sleeping in them all night. Experience in cold weather camping will help your boys prepare for a future Mount Everest, or any other challenge that seems tough. Prepare for these challenging base camps:

Winter Clothing Inspection No Scout expedition would climb Mount Everest without proper attention to winter clothing. Proper clothing is essential to survival. Each patrol leader will present his patrol for clothing inspection. He will point out important elements of winter clothing, including the principles of layering, the avoidance of cotton ("cotton kills" in the winter), and the need for warm, dry footwear. No Scout will be eliminated for clothing deficiencies, but he may be advised to return to camp to retrieve or borrow something essential for his own safety. Patrols will be scored on clothing preparedness, with recognition given to the best prepared. A display will be provided to coach Scouts on the best choices in active winter wear. BSA Rank Requirements: to be added, together with possible pdf on winter clothing... Equipment List 1 - WEBELOS or Boy Scout handbook Compass, pencil, and 12 ruler 4-20 or longer sturdy rescue ropes 8 lengths of ropes for lashing 1- sleeping bag or blanket Patrol First aid Kit including a triangular bandage 1- tarp large enough to shelter the patrol and ground pads for each member fire building kit, cooking utensils and food for each member of your patrol Note: please refer to equipment list for each station Compass Navigation Challenge Your patrol has left one camp on the slope of Mount Everest. In route to the next higher camp, you are struck with snow, high winds, and near "white-out" conditions. With darkness approaching, the next camp is out of reach. Your guide headed down slope in search of help and is presumed lost. Thankfully, he left you with a map that shows a nearby food cache and a more distant climber's hut. Your patrol must reach the food supply and continue on to the hut before dark. Under these conditions, your survival depends on your skill with map and compass. Equipment Needed: compass (mirror type preferred), 12 inch ruler, pencil. BSA Rank Requirements: Compass -- 2nd C. 3a, 3b; Orienteering --1st C. 4a.

On the Cornice As you climb higher you reach a hazardous zone with steep drop-offs on each side of the trail. High winds have packed snow into a dangerous overhand called a "cornice." A member of another patrol fell behind his friends and slid down onto the cornice. He is still alive, but seems sleepy and unresponsive. His body temperature is probably dangerously low. No one can guess how much weight the cornice can support. The weight of rescuers might collapse the cornice resulting a fall of over 1,000 feet. To make it tougher, the victim may have neck or back injuries. You hesitate to simply rope him and drag him up the slope. Every minute counts. Rescue him! Rescue Phase, suggested steps: 1) Secure a safety rope around a patrol member using an appropriate knot. Belay the rope around a strong anchor point and lower him down to the victim. Place another safety rope around the victim and secure it. Place a blanket or sleeping bag over the victim. Remain with the victim to encourage him and keep him awake. 2) Take advantage of some discarded poles left behind by another expedition. Using the lashing ropes you brought with you, lash them into a stretcher-shaped frame large enough to hold the victim. 3) Send a second patrol member down slope with the stretcher. Be sure he is also properly secured with a safety rope. The two rescuers carefully slide the victim onto the improvised stretcher and secure him to it. Secure anther rope to the stretcher with an appropriate knot. With the help of patrol members above, gently skid the victim and stretcher to the top of the slope. Remember to manage the rope attached to each rescuer for safety. You will be timed on the rescue, with the clock stopping when the victim and rescuers are on safe ground. Hints: Utilize teamwork and division of tasks to maximize speed in both rescue and treatment phases. For fast boiling water, look for small fuels: sticks up to pencil diameter vs. larger slow burning branches. Equipment Needed: Four (4) lengths of sturdy rescue rope (20 feet or longer each). Longer rope can be doubled for use without cutting. Eight (8) shorter ropes adequate for lashing poles together. Sleeping bag or blanket and insulated ground pad for use in treating hypothermia. BSA Rank Requirements: Knots -- Tend. 3a & 3b, 2nd C. 2g; Lashings Injured Climber! A member of your patrol tried, but failed, to clip himself to the safety line with everyone else. He slipped and fell down an icy slope, crashing into a boulder sideways. You check for vital signs and find him unconscious but with pulse and breathing. He has suffered a compound fracture of the lower right leg. The bone is partially protruding and bleeding is severe. Using recommended BSA first aid techniques, apply first aid. Treat for shock. Improvise a splint for the leg to permit movement up to the trail. During the rescue he regains consciousness and complains of severe pain in his left ankle.

It appears to be badly sprained if not broken. Using a triangular bandage, tightly bandage the ankle to minimize movement and pain. He complains of numbness in his left hand. His glove is missing and you see tell-tale signs of frostbite. Treat his hand accordingly. Once the victim is safely back on the trail, make him comfortable, treat for shock, and secure him with enough warmth to avoid hypothermia while waiting for transport. Hypothermia Treatment & Fire Building Phase: Immediately take recommended steps to treat the victim for hypothermia. In this extreme cold, hot water is critical for the victim. To provide hot water for hypothermia treatment, build a quick, hot fire using natural materials found in the area. You will find a metal can with a wire bail on site. Fill it within a inch of the top. A stick will be useful to hold it over the fire. Since your victim desperately needs warmth, every minute counts. You will be timed from the end of the rescue phase to the full rolling boil of the water! Use the hot water in recommended ways to aid the hypothermia victim. Notes: No fire starting aids are allowed. You will be provided with a match box containing five (5) stick matches. If you need more, they will be provided at a 30 second penalty per match -- added to the total time recorded to rolling boil. Equipment Needed: Patrol first aid kit, triangular bandages or BSA neckerchiefs, insulated ground pad and blanket or sleeping bag. BSA Rank Requirements: Hypothermia -- 2nd C. 2g; Fire building -- 2nd C. 2c. Stranded at Dusk! Within sight of the peak, exhaustion and thin air slows your progress. Not only will you fall short of the peak this day, but falling darkness will prevent your return to the lower camp. You must improvise emergency shelter immediately. Using equipment you have with you and anything you can utilize on site, create shelter adequate to survive the night. A bitter wind is blowing. You will be advised of its direction on site. Using your compass, arrange your shelter to offer maximum protection from the wind. When your arrangements are complete, place your entire patrol under shelter as you would have them survive the night. Equipment Needed: Tarp adequate to shelter the patrol with essential ropes to secure it. Hiking sticks (optional) to aid in creating the shelter. Insulated ground pad (whole or cut into individual "situpons") sufficient to protect all patrol members from the cold ground. Sleeping bag or blanket to share among the patrol members.

Hot Trail Lunch At mid-day enjoy a Derby lunch break. With firewood, kindling, and tinder you brought on your sled, build a fire in a approved fire ring or off-ground fire pit. Boil water for hot chocolate, top ramen, cup-of-soup, or other convenient products. Roasted hot dogs with buns, canned baked beans, other simple fare is recommended. Your patrol will receive full credit for this challenge by building your own fire and enjoying at least one hot liquid and one hot food item for lunch. Survival on the cold slopes of Mount Everest demands hot food and drink! Equipment Needed: Firewood and approved fire starters (waxed cardboard, petroleum jelly cotton balls, etc.). Pot with lid, large enough to provide hot liquids to each patrol member. Other implements as necessary to heat or cook food items Patrols are responsible for bringing their own food and condiments to suit tastes of the patrol. Raising the Colors At last, your patrol has reached the peak of Mount Everest. Congratulations on your achievement and survival thus far! In honor of fellow Americans who failed to reach the peak and lost their lives on the slopes, you will raise the United States Flag (provided) on the flagpole on site. You have been authorized by the authorities back home to fly the flag at half-staff. With strict attention to flag etiquette, properly raise the flag. After a brief moment of silence, properly lower the flag and fold it. Be sure your patrol members salute the flag and conduct themselves as Scouts should. Respectfully direct everyone nearby (including adult spectators) to pause, stand, and salute (or place hand over heart) during the ceremony. All equipment is provided on site BSA Rank Requirements: 2nd C. 8a-b. Sled Race To celebrate reaching the peak, all patrols will do a full-tilt race downhill to finish at the Administration Building. For safety, sled teams will be dispatched in heats and timed to the finish.
