Nepal Panorama
Itinerary Nepal offers a true walking adventure - the ancient cities of the Kathmandu Valley, the massive Annapurna mountains, and a distinct and ancient mountain culture. Walk through friendly villages, valleys untouched by time and see spectacular panoramas at every turn. If time permits, we will visit the nearby Pashupatinath Hindu temple. This temple is dedicated to Shiva and situated on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River. This is the most important Hindu temple in Nepal and is also a cremation site for Hindus. We may also visit the Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal and one of the largest in the world. Boudhanath is the religious centre for Nepal s Tibetan community, and is in one of the few places in the world where Tibetan culture is unrestricted and accessible to outsiders (If we arrive too late to see these places, they can be included in the following day s tour). (Meals included: Day 3: Kathmandu After the earthquakes in Nepal in April 2015, some areas were badly affected. Although they have started to rebuild, it will be a slow process, and some of the walking tours around the cities may have to be amended. Day 1: Depart UK Day 2: Arrive Kathmandu An afternoon transfer to our hotel. Accommodation: Hotel Malla (2 nights), Kathmandu en/ The Kathmandu Valley is the historical centre of Nepal, and each of its three cities, Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, have strong artistic and architectural traditions. Today s sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, will be mostly on foot, and includes the vegetable & spice markets, with their many courtyards and bustling bazaars, the Temple of the Living Goddess, and Durbar Square. Durbar means palace, and takes its name from the old Royal Palace. This is the centre of the old city, and there are a number 2
of interesting temples including Kasthamandap, the House of Wood, which gives the city its name. Accommodation: Hotel Heritage, Bhaktapur (1 night) After lunch we will drive to Swayambhunath, one of the most popular symbols of Nepal. Its great stairway leads to a temple complex dominated by a soaring central stupa. There are excellent views over the Kathmandu Valley from here, useful for orientation at the start of your holiday. Day 4: Nagi Gompa walk and on to Bhaktapur Today s walk begins with an hour s ascent to Nagi Gompa. Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, a renowned Buddhist teacher, is the head Lama of this monastery. We descend to a ridge that meanders through pine forest. From here we see the mountain of Nagarjun, paddy fields, the Bagmati River, Sankhu village and Nagarkot. We walk along the ridge through Sundarijal village to meet our vehicle. From here we drive to the medieval city of Bhaktapur, which we explore this afternoon. (7.5 miles/ 12km; approx 6 hours walking). Day 5: Bhaktapur and Nagarkot This morning there is the opportunity to take an optional flight to see the Himalayas. This one hour journey is approx. $205/person (price fluctuates). This morning we will explore Bhaktapur, visiting its Durbar Square. We also visit the Nyatapola temple - not only the highest temple in the Kathmandu Valley but also one of the best examples of traditional Nepali architecture. The main occupations in Bhaktapur are weaving and pottery, and the houses are traditionally of brick with intricate wood carving for decoration. We will spend some time exploring this well preserved city on foot. After lunch we drive to our hotel at Nagarkot. Nagarkot is famous for its hilltop position (2,200m) which offers views of spectacular sunsets over the valley and memorable sunrises over the Himalayas. On clear days there are views of Mt. Everest, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Choba Bhamre and other parts of the eastern Himalayan range. This afternoon is free to relax or to enjoy a walk through the local 3

Accommodation: Balthali Village Resort (3 nights) Day 8: Day walk to Pada Gaun Today we will visit a typical Tamang village, Pada Gaun (gaun means village in Nepalese) where a Buddhist community lives. The Tamangs originally came from Tibet several hundred years ago. The village is very traditional and secluded from the modern world. After lunch we drive to Khopasi to start our afternoon 4
Day 9: Day walk to Neupane Gaun Our walk descends to the rivers of the Roshi and Ladku Khola, where we rest and enjoy the valley scenery. We can also visit the holy shrine of Lord Shiva and a traditional maize mill. Continuing, a gradual ascent takes us to a Tamang village. Our return crosses the Ladku Khola via a long suspension bridge (4 miles / 8km; 1,150ft / 350m of ascent/ descent). The afternoon is free to relax or explore the area a little further on your own. Day 12: To Pokhara After breakfast we drive to Kathmandu airport for a short flight to Pokhara. After lunch we walk through the forests to the Peace Pagoda, one of 80 built around the world as a symbol of peace. Day 10: To Godavari Today we will drive to Godavari, where the rest of the day will be at leisure. Accommodation: Hotel View Bhrikuti (2 nights) Day 11: Champadevi summit Today we walk to the summit of Champadevi for majestic views of the Himalayas and the Kathmandu Valley. The trail starts gradually and progresses to a steeper slope. The summit is marked by a small white stupa, with commanding views of the valley. We can catch glimpses of Pharping and Dakshinkali from here. The peak stands at 7,474ft / 2,278m (5 miles / 8km; 1,600ft / 480m of ascent/descent). Accommodation: Temple Tree Resort (4 nights) Day 13: Kalikasthan and Begnas Tal Today we transfer to the start of our walk. The trail ascends, quite steeply at times, through the colourful ethnic villages of the Gurung and Ghaley people, to Kalikasthan, an excellent vantage point for viewing the mountains at close range. The three distinct mountain clusters you see are the Mansalu, the Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri. After lunch we follow the ridge line through villages down to the pretty 5
shores of Begnas Tal, transferring from here back to Pokhara (6 miles / 9.5km; 800ft / 240m of ascent, 2,000ft / 630m of descent). Day 14: Sarangkot We begin our walk from Naudandan, from where a pleasant four hour level walk through the Bhramin and Chhetris villages takes us to the vantage point of Sarangkot. This is the perfect place for a rest, where we can admire the far-reaching views, and watch the acrobatics of the many paragliders that launch from here. Short walks in the area surrounding Pokhara and plenty of time to explore the town. Day 16: To Kathmandu This morning we explore Pokhara itself, visiting the famous Davis Falls. After lunch we drive to the airport for the short flight to Kathmandu. We have the rest of the afternoon to relax before enjoying a farewell dinner and a Nepali cultural show. 12 Dietary requirements Please contact us as far in advance as possible if you have any specific dietary requirements. We will do our best to accommodate you. If you require a specific meal on the flight, please let us know as soon as possible, and no later than 96 hours before travel. Travel tips for a comfortable flight We ve put together a few simple tips to help make your flight as comfortable as possible, ensuring you begin your holiday in tip-top shape. Move about. Change position and avoid crossing your legs. Immobility poses the greatest risk in the development of clotting disorders. Get out of your seat and walk around as regularly as possible to improve circulation No pills. Unless advised by your doctor, do not take sleeping tablets on the flight; this will reduce your mobility and make you feel sluggish Protect your ears. If you experience discomfort due to the cabin pressure changes, suck a sweet, chew, or hold your nostrils and gently blow through your nose; this should equalise the pressure. If you still experience problems, speak to a member of the cabin crew Drink plenty. Ask a member of the cabin crew if you are thirsty. Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee or carbonated drinks as these will dehydrate you. Instead, try to drink plenty of fruit juices or water Eat light. Avoid heavy meals and foods air expands at altitude and heavy meals will result in that bloated feeling Moisturise. Your skin, especially your lips and nostrils, may feel dry so moisturising creams may help. If you wear contact lenses, always carry your glasses with you, as your eyes may feel dryer than usual Stay loose. Wear loose fitting, comfortable shoes and clothes Flight socks are recommended to help prevent DVT on longhaul flights Lost/damaged luggage If your bag or its contents are damaged or lost while in the airline s care, this should be reported to the baggage service agents at the airport. They will assess the damage and in some cases the airline may decide to settle your claim immediately. You will be given a reference to quote to your insurance company if settlement cannot be reached. In many cases baggage claims can only be accepted in writing. A baggage claim form must be obtained from the airport. HF Holidays with-flight guests For those travelling on our HF Holidays group flight, please proceed to the arrivals hall once you have passed through passport control, customs and baggage reclaim, when you arrive at your destination. Your leader or local leader will assemble the group in the arrivals hall. Look out for the HF Holidays sign. Independent travellers If you are arriving ahead of the group, and are meeting them at the first hotel, please leave a message at the 12
hotel reception for the HF Holidays leader or local leader, detailing your room number, and a mobile telephone number if possible. The leader will contact you once the group arrives. If you are arriving after the group, a message will be left for you at the hotel reception, welcoming you and giving details of the time and place to meet the group. If your flight arrives before the group flight and you would like to join the transfer to the first hotel, please contact our Abroad Administration team on (0) They will have a list of the relevant transfer costs. Safety on your holiday Once you have made your booking, you will receive a pre-holiday questionnaire where we ask for details of next of kin, and insurance details. We need to have this from you at least 4 weeks before travel. Please also inform us of any medical situation which may affect your enjoyment of the holiday Please listen to any safety instructions from the leader Keep group members in view, especially if weather or visibility is poor If you become separated from the group, please stay where you are, the leader will retrace their steps to find you Each leader carries a first aid kit but is not allowed to supply any medication including aspirin, paracetamol, antihistamines, and antiseptic cream. You may wish to bring these items with you emergency kit in their rucksack and call emergency services on (ambulance) or 100 (police). Tipping Tips have been included in your holiday price for key services such as local guides/ driver/restaurants. Any additional tips are at your own discretion. Tips are not included for the Chitwan extension. Climate Holidays take place in the dry season, when visibility is good and temperatures are at their best. October is after the summer monsoon and the countryside is lush and green, with excellent visibility and generally balmy temperatures. In March temperatures are similar, although the land is dryer and visibility may not be quite as good. However at this time flowers are in bloom adding wonderful colour to the landscape. The temperature can change quickly at any time of year, it can be cold at night and when the sun goes behind a cloud. Local currency & money matters Nepalese Rupee (Rs).
