2014 NANGA MUSIC FESTIVAL PATRON INFORMATION Weather Report Looks like we could have some lovely weather over the weekend. But it is Dwellingup so...pack for all seasons! Getting to the Nanga Music Festival The Nanga Music Festival is based at the Nanga Bush Camp. This is located just outside of Dwellingup, 110 kms south of Perth. There will be lovely new signs from Dwellingup to point the way, as long as they don t get knocked off before you get there! Allow approximately 1.5 hrs travel time from Perth and 1 hr from Armadale. From Perth, Nanga Bush Camp can be accessed in several ways. See the map below. 1. Via Kwinana Fwy South - Take Lakes Road exit (turn left); continue to South West Highway at North Dandalup; turn right and turn left straight away just past the roadhouse (see Dwellingup sign) into Del Park Road, continue to Dwellingup, turn left at General Store (Williams Road) (see 4). 2. Via Armadale - South West Highway through to North Dandalup, (see Dwellingup sign), turn left into Del Park Road, continue to Dwellingup, turn left at General Store (Williams Road) (see 4.). 3. Via Mandurah - Take Pinjarra Road to Pinjarra, turn left at T-Junction lights onto South West Hwy, cross bridge, turn right into Williams Road, continue to Dwellingup. 4. From Dwellingup General Store follow Williams Road east for 1 km to Nanga Road, turn right, stay on the bitumen road for 7km to Murray bridge. Cross bridge.entrance to Nanga Bush Camp is 100 m from bridge on the left.

5. From Bunbury and the South take the South West Hwy to Waroona, turn right at McDowell St (see Nanga Bush Camp sign) bear left onto Nanga Brook Road, travel approximately 20 kms to Nanga Road (T-Junction). Turn left. From here it is 10.5 kms to Nanga Bush Camp - Entrance is on the right before the bridge. When you arrive at Nanga Bush Camp Stop at the gate, and present yourself. To save paper, don t print any tickets. If you look suspicious we will demand ID. Otherwise, if your name matches our list, we ll probably let you in. If it is busy at the gate please pull into a parking spot and walk over to the gate tent. Don t clog up the front of the tent with lots of cars as it will quickly block the gate and stop anyone getting in or out. You will be given a wristband, program and your room allocation. You're now a member of the Nanga community! Be sure to pick up a free pair of earplugs at the gate to help you sleep in peace. You ll need them. Gates open at 4pm on Friday, and you will need to leave by 10am on Monday. If you are there before that we may not be able to welcome you because we re busy getting everything set up. If you are early, park away from the gate and enjoy a walk around the river or the bush until we can attend to your needs. If you have booked the Woodshed lodge you won't be able to access the building before 5.00pm on Friday. There will be a group moving out and the place needs to be given a once over before you get in. Please don t hang around there before 5 as they have kids around and get edgy that they will get squashed First, drive to your accommodation building (one of three giant Jarrah cabins Currawong, Timbarra and Woodshed); park carefully (minimise space); find your room, claim your bunk (your name will be on it) and settle in. The site map will help you orient yourself. Now that you are inside Nanga Bush Camp all venues and accommodation are accessible by foot on gravel roads or walking trails. Only 200 metres separate Currawong and Timbarra and it s only about 500 metres to walk from Timbarra to the Woodshed-Gallery-Roundhouse(Heartzone) area. We are providing a free shuttle bus service before and after lunch and dinner to assist those with walking difficulties. It is best to stick to the roads, especially at night. Wear decent walking shoes and take special care on the paths because it is easy to slip on the gravel. Bring an umbrella in case it starts to rain and keep a torch with you at all times in case it gets dark before you notice. At night, use the reflectors on the roads which indicate how to get to each building (Red = Woodshed, Blue = Timbarra, White = Currawong). If you get lost, enjoy the scenery and stagger back to the gate or to Currawong for assistance and improved directions. Or ask someone who looks less lost and see how you go. If you arrive at the front gate and all is deserted (this will happen if you get there after 9pm on Friday and after 10am on Saturday and Sunday) don t despair. Hit the intercom button next to the boom gate and someone will let you in. Please make your way to Currawong and see anyone on the main desk there for your wristbands, program or any other needs.

Heartzone Camping Campervans Accommodation/ curfews All the accommodation consists of bunk beds with foam mattresses and a pillow. You need to bring your own bedding (sheets, rugs, doonas, sleeping bags, thermal pyjamas) and towels. Bring more than less. It can get mighty cold in Nanga! You have selected your own beds when you booked. To help you find them there will be floor plans and lists at the entrance to each building together with room lists outside each room. Some rooms are very full so please be courteous, stick to the bed you booked and get to know your new roomies. A reminder about curfews for each building: Woodshed: home to the canteen and our early-to-bed accommodation (be very quiet after 11pm). Timbarra: self-catering kitchen and later-to-bed accommodation (1am curfew). Currawong: main concert venue, self-catering kitchen and late night jam session location. Most rooms have no ceilings, so there can be noise spill within the buildings. That's why we provide free earplugs! If you are housed in Woodshed (or Timbarra), it doesn't mean that you have to go to bed at 11pm (or 1am); you can party on elsewhere, but you just have to be very quiet when you get back.

The kitchen cranks up early in Woodshed but Timbarra residents value a fairly quiet start to the morning. Camping Vehicle and camper trailer camping is in the parking area outside Timbarra. Tent camping is outside the BBQ central area between Roundhouse (Heartzone) and Hermitage cottage. Campers can use the ablution blocks adjacent Hermitage cottage or in Woodshed and vehicle campers can use the facilities in Timbarra. All camping sites are unpowered, and generators are not permitted. Self-catering facilities (eg fridge or cooking) are available in Timbarra. You can also use the camp kitchen near the Roundhouse or bring your own cooling and cooking facilities. Meals If you haven't booked meals, it's too late to do it online now. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available throughout the weekend but you will need to book any additional meals now at the gate when you arrive. We have a limited number available at the gate so first in best fed You can still view the menu at the Nanga website nangamusic.org.au. A vegetarian option is provided for each meal. For those who have pre-booked, meals are provided in the Woodshed building. Paul will check you off on his list before you collect your meal. If you buy meals at the gate be sure to take your receipt with you to give to Paul at your first meal. Coffee, hot chocolate, tea and chai and snacks will be provided by the Crèperie coffee van at Currawong during the festival. There is no breakfast on Monday morning, but Mick will still be providing coffee and crèpes at Currawong. If you don t bring your own food, or do not pre-book meals, we cannot guarantee that you will be fed. Our meals are a great part of the Nanga community and an opportunity to mix and meet with music lovers and musicians alike. We keep the meal costs down by self-cleaning all our cutlery and crockery. Helping out with the washing up is a great way of volunteering, meeting some more people and sharing the load so that we can all get back in time to enjoy the next concert! Feel free to join in when you see the chance. Performing There are four ways you can have a go yourself at the festival. Bring your stuff! Blind Date concert The Blind Date concert, a Nanga favourite, will be held on Sunday afternoon. Patrons and artists can volunteer for the Blind Date concert by putting their name on the board in Currawong, before 11:40am on Saturday. Positions are limited and we want everyone to have a chance to join in so, while everyone can put their name down, there will be a live draw to discover who will fill the 27 spots available. Please do not put someone else's name down. Positions are in such demand that it would be a shame for someone to back out partway through and deprive someone else of the opportunity. Performers will be allocated to groups in the same random basis, and these one-off bands will come up

with a 5 minute performance piece for the concert. Humour is a hallmark of the Blind Date concert. Taste, not so much. Groups will be drawn at the start of lunch on Saturday so you can find your dates and get the creative process started over lunch. Open mike sessions in the Listening Gallery During lunch and dinner times, our Café style Listening Gallery will operate as an open mike space in the dorm adjacent to the washing up area at Woodshed. It is a quiet listening space for those wishing to enjoy the music while they eat. If you want to chat during meals, please stay in Woodshed. If you'd like to perform in the Listening Gallery, please put your name on the board outside. Bookings will be on a first come basis but, because these sessions are so popular, you can only book one slot over the whole weekend. If your name is on the board before the official sign-up time it will be rubbed out. Session and sign-up times are as follows: Friday night dinner 6pm sign-up Saturday Lunch and Saturday dinner 9am sign-up Sunday Lunch 9am sign-up Craig and Lara will be running the Listening Gallery this year. Each act gets 2 songs or max 10 minutes, including setup. Note the open mike is intended for general festival patrons wanting to put their toes in the water' of performance, and we encourage 'seasoned' performers to give these people an opportunity first. In addition, during all Blind Date practice times (Saturday afternoon from 4:50 to 5:40 and Sunday afternoon from 1:50 to 2:20), the Listening Gallery will be the venue for an acoustic song circle. No bookings required. Come down to share a piece, join in or just have a listen. Poets Breakfast On Sunday morning Ray Penny & Kay Cairns will host our ever popular Poets Breakfast in the Woodshed. Here is your chance to recite some of your own verse or some which you have learned from another s pen. This is always a very entertaining session, often delivering some real surprises and some belly laughs. So come armed with a poem J or just enjoy the show while you have your breakfast. Campfire Jams After the concert each night, hang around for a jam and sing-along around one of the fireplaces. In recent years the singer-songwriters congregate at the internal fire pit in Timbarra, and the sing-along/session is in Currawong. You can be a bit of both depending on how the spirit moves you. Instrumentalists have occasionally found themselves out on the verandah which, while lovely, can get a bit chilly. To fend off frostbite the Festival has procured a couple of outdoor gas space heaters to keep you warm well into the night. We d like them to survive a few years so be gentle with them if you are moving them around. They are surprisingly flimsy!

General Information What is supplied Mattresses & pillows Ear plugs Tea and Coffee outside of meals times in Woodshed and Timbarra. For self caterers: in Timbarra and Currawong (no cooking during concert sessions): o Crockery, cutlery & cooking equipment o Stoves & ovens o Coolroom and freezer o Cleaning products o Tea towels, firelighters & matches What to bring Torch Sheets and/or Sleeping bag/blanket/doona & pillowslip (extra bedding and warm clothing) Personal gear i.e. towels, soap etc. Wine/beer glasses and your favourite beverages Umbrella/ rain gear Food (if self catering) Sensible shoes for walking on dirt/pea-gravel roads/tracks, which may also be muddy if it rains. Your instrument(s). What not to bring Kettles and other electrical appliances! Valuables Pets High heels! Lighting While lighting is provided around the buildings and on the designated roads (labeled as vehicle tracks on the map), there may still be dark areas, and we strongly recommend that you bring a torch and use the roads with the reflectors, not the walking trails, for movement between buildings after dark. Use of private cars to travel between venues is a dust and safety hazard to the other pedestrians. If you have any concerns about your ability to safely get around the site on the gravel tracks please utilise the shuttle bus service if you can. Travel at times other than meal times should use the disabled bays provided. The shuttle bus will be operating this year at the start and end of lunch and dinner mealtimes. This will run between Timbarra, Currawong and the Woodshed. Bus Stops will be identified outside

each building. If you are at that stop 5 minutes prior to the designated meal time a bus will be along to take you to Woodshed. Drop offs will commence approximately 10 minutes prior to the end of the designated meal time. Communication Mobile phone service is not reliable on site. A Public Phone is located near the office for use by campsite guests. It can be accessed by Homelink or Phoneaway cards, and these are for sale at the office. Incoming, urgent calls can be directed to the Campsite Managers on and messages will be passed on. Electricity Nanga Bush Camp has sufficient electricity capacity to supply the needs of its own facilities. However, this capacity is limited, and you are requested not to bring your own electrical appliances. Cleaning Nanga Bush Camp is a self-clean facility. Please help us to keep the camp clean and tidy. We ask you to pack up your room by10am on Monday, so the buildings can be prepared for the school groups which will arrive during the week. We are responsible for clearing our own dishes from the tables, scraping the plates into the bins and placing our dishes/cutlery in the soaking tubs, washing them, drying them and stacking them back inside. Spending 10 minutes at the sink or on drying will probably cover your contribution for the weekend. We won t drag you away if you would like to do more! Volunteers We will appreciate your help during the festival. Just pitch in, or see a committee member if you can help with: Washing the dishes after meals. Lighting and keeping the fires going. Helping out with making/serving mulled wine in Currawong after dinner. Tidying up chairs. Packing up Listening Gallery and Woodshed after lunch on Sunday Stacking chairs and helping bump the sound and stage out on Sunday night Providing neck rubs to stressed Committee members Helping with the bump-out on Monday morning Running the Nanga Music Festival The Nanga Music Festival is run by the incorporated association, the Araluen Folk Festival. We simply trade as Nanga Music Festival. Because the association is incorporated, each paying participant automatically becomes a financial member of the association. The Festival ticket you buy doubles as your Membership Card to the Araluen Folk Festival Inc. for 2013/2014. This will not obligate you in any way, however it does give you a voice if you choose to be involved in the organisation of the next festival.

Annual General Meeting Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and festival wind-up will be held on Thu 20/11/14 with some music and wine and cheese. Please contact Tim Fisher ) if you want to join us. Hopefully we ll have figured out where we re going to hold it by then...
