Campfire Planning
OBJECTIVES Understand the basics of planning a successful campfire Feel comfortable as a campfire planner Know where to find resources for campfire planning
WHY DO WE HAVE CAMPFIRES? Fun Entertainment Fellowship Action Adventure Training Inspiration
WHY DO WE HAVE CAMPFIRES? Campfires are an excellent way to fulfill the Aims of Scouting: Build moral strength and character Learn responsibilities of participating citizenship Develop physical, mental and emotional fitness
PROGRAM ELEMENTS The 10 S s of campfires Start Safety Showmanship Songs Stunts Skits Settle Stories S eremonies STOP
START Have a plan: use the Program Planner Improve organization Manage time and resources Gauge appropriateness of elements
PROGRAM PLANNER Pace mirrors the fire An initial spark to light it A steady build in liveliness A peak of energy A gradual mellowing A quiet ending
CAMPFIRE ETIQUETTE No flashlights No booing No loud, distracting conversations. Of course, cell phones off Enter and exit campfire area quietly
PARTICIPANTS Keep them informed Provide copy of the program large audience Prepare them 2-3 segments before their turn Keep them inspired Provide a good theme Plant seeds if they re having difficulty Provide copies of song or story books Encourage them to do their best!
SAFETY Health and Safety are always first Area: Layout, Stage, Audience. Debris free Fire In approved campfire pit. Safe distance from people No higher than your knees Designate one Fire-Tender Never use unapproved fire starter or petroleum products Have fire extinguishing materials and first aid kit ready
SHOWMANSHIP The perfect campfire is a show! MC keeps things moving Stage crew to get participants to and from campfire circle Dress it up with props, lighting, costumes Element of surprise Know the environment: speak loud enough to be heard in back row. Microphone
SONGS So many to choose Songs are great to involve the whole audience In the upward part of campfire curve use action songs Grand Ole Duke of York Baby Shark Boom Chika Boom In the downward part of the curve use inspirational songs or rounds America Kookaburra Song
STUNTS Stunts, Run-ons, Applauses are for fillers between program events to keep things rolling Stunts Humorous: It s All Around Me! Contests: two sides of audience to cheer loudest Games simple ones can be used at campfires Applauses fill time but also recognize the participants Clam, Great Job Pack---Can t Be Beat Really Big Hand No Inappropriate cheers
SKITS Skits are what kids love best! Excitement of doing them. They love watching them Boys need your guidance and your help Choose an appropriate skit for cubs Finding skits Everywhere: online, Boy s Life Practice for success and so their voices can be heard Invisible Bench Eddie Bauer Talking Dog
SETTLE On the downward curve of the campfire Time to change to mood Soften your voice. Choose quiet cheers Fingernail Flea clap Careful not to get crowd over excited again Don t let things get dull. Boys may fall asleep
STORIES Storytelling is your big opportunity for: Inspiration, entertainment, education, passing on knowledge & tradition Story Teller s instrument is his/her voice and body The story is the thing Favorite, remembered stories are told For some, may be best to read Good Story has: Strong dramatic plot. Action that can be described clearly Good fast start. Interesting opening statement Surprise climax
SEREMONIES Opening Ceremony will set the tone from the beginning Great setting for Arrow of Light ceremony Present perfect opportunity for inspiration: patriotic feeling; Cub Scout values; respect for people being honored Closing ceremonies create the memory Effective when solemn and thoughtful. Campfire Ashes Remind us of the joys we share, give and receive Softly sing Taps Cub Scout Vespers America while guests are leaving. Leaves a lasting memory Never drag out a ceremony too long. Boys lose interest and get restless
WHAT ABOUT PLAN B? What if we can t have a fire? Campfire without the fire Use an artificial fire Songfest Stargazing Board Games Night Hike
STOP The perfect campfire lasts 45min to one hour Size of the group determines amount of participation from individual dens Leave them wanting more rather than getting bored
