Grant signed into law the establishment of Yellowstone National Park, the first national park anywhere in the world, on March 1, Conservation, preservation, education, and enjoyment are all important aspects of a national park designation, and indeed, within the national parks visited during our National Parks of the Rockies program, there is much to see, learn about, and enjoy. Grand Teton National Park dedication ceremony, 1929 I am excited to invite you to travel with us on an extraordinary 9-day journey to three iconic national parks in the western United States: Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Glacier. Within each park, and along the routes between them, immerse yourself in the spectacular geological wonders and diverse wildlife of Wyoming and Montana, as well as the cultural and historical treasures of the Old West. An important adjunct to the conservation and preservation focus of the National Park System are the many historic hotels and lodges that have been a vital part of visiting the parks for more than a century. As you explore Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Glacier, you will stay at some of these renowned facilities, and visit a few others. Their walls resonate with the experiences of long-ago park visitors who, dressed in long skirts, long-sleeved shirts, and high-top leather boots, journeyed to the wilderness aboard stage coaches, trains, and wagons, but who nonetheless felt the same awe and amazement as you are sure to feel today. 3 Barbara Batey has been a naturalist and guide in Montana and Wyoming for more than 25 years, and is a seasoned tour manager. While she has extensive experience leading tours around the world, her ultimate passion is her Montana home. She studied biology at Western Washington University, earned a master s in biochemistry at the University of Washington, and undertook years of study in natural history at the Yellowstone Institute. Barbara s knowledge of the ecology, flora, fauna, and geology of Montana is encyclopedic (she seems to know every flower and blade of grass that grows there), and she eagerly shares her love of nature. The Wort Hotel (R,D) sunday, September 13 Jackson Grand Teton National Park Enjoy a guided tour of The Wort Hotel, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in The hotel was built in 1941 by brothers John and Jess Wort, who played a significant role in transforming the economy of the Jackson Hole valley from ranching to tourism. Participate in interpretive walks in Grand Teton National Park, established in 1929 by President Calvin Coolidge; look for elk from a special viewing platform at the National Elk Refuge; and enjoy the diverse collection of wildlife paintings and sculptures at the National Museum of Wildlife Art before a free evening in Jackson. Stop for lunch and a boat ride at Jenny Lake Lodge before continuing to Yellowstone National Park. Spend two nights at the historic Old Faithful Inn, a prime example of the Golden Age of rustic resort architecture and a member of the Historic Hotels of America program. In West Yellowstone explore the museum housed in the historic Union Pacific Depot, where exhibits tell the story of visitors fascination with Yellowstone since its founding. In Virginia City, most of which is a National Historic Landmark, stroll through a remarkably well-preserved open-air museum of life during the Gold Rush. Visit Headwaters State Park, where the Missouri River begins and where the Lewis and Clark Expedition stopped in This evening check in to the historic Sacajawea Hotel in Three Forks, built in 1910 to serve passengers on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as a Historic Hotels of American property. Sacajawea Hotel (B,L,D) friday Saturday, September Glacier National Park Glacier National Park, designated a national park in 1910, is the centerpiece of a region known as the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem and retains almost all of its original native plant and animal species. Spend two nights at Lake McDonald Lodge, a National Historic Landmark on the southeast shore of Lake McDonald, and two full days exploring the park. Climb the spectacular Going-to-the-Sun Road, a National Historic Landmark, aboard Glacier s iconic red motor coaches ( jammers ), the perfect way to take in the spectacular sights of the park. Hike the nearby trails or take a day trip to historic Many Glacier Lodge with a hike to Grinnell Glacier. Enjoy a farewell reception on the evening of September 19. Depending on location, temperatures can range from the 30s and 40s F at night to the 60s and 70s F during the day, with occasional rain. All participants should be in good health and capable of keeping up with an active group of travelers. Deposits are refundable (less a $250 per person administration fee) if written notice of cancellation is received within 30 days of reservation; after that, deposits are 100% nonrefundable. Final payment is due May 15, 2015 (120 days prior to departure). Cancellations within 120 days are nonrefundable. Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended. Note: Neither the National Trust for Historic Preservation nor Criterion Travel, the tour operator, accepts liability for any airline cancellation penalties incurred with the purchase of nonrefundable tickets. Membership dues for 2014/2015 are $30 for family and $20 for individual membership. The minimum age limit for the program is 14.
