6 Our Stry In 1997 ur funder, Tm Clark, began a prject with Steven Saint t help the Warni peple with utbard mtrs fr their canes. During that time Tm and his family went n a 6 week missin experience with HCJB Wrld Radi in Shell Ecuadr. By the end f this experience, it was bvius that full time missins was nt Gds call n his life, but Tms heart was still drawn t wrking with the indigenus and natinal Pastrs. Gd used the next five years t fcus and develp a visin, JungleMaster Ministries was brn. JungleMaster began by building small mtrs fr natinal pastrs n the upper Amazn, ver time JungleMaster has grwn and changed. Tday JungleMaster is engaged in building a Natinal led, Self- Supprting, Missinary Church n the upper Amazn in the village f Santa Rita de Castilla. JungleMaster has a Peruvian bard f directrs and a Nn-Gvernmental Organizatin set up in Peru. In Santa Rita, 180 miles upriver frm Iquits Peru, JungleMaster has built the largest Evangelical Church in an area the size f Washingtn State, als a guest Huse, Pastrs residence, generatr huse and kitchen. JungleMaster has fur member churches in the area f Santa Rita and tw church plants 120 miles up-river frm Santa Rita. Our ministry mdel is t use the leadership f ur member churches t be missinaries in ur church plants deep int the jungle. In exchange fr their leaders help; we supply member churches with the tls t build and imprve their facilities and training fr their leaders. We are develping funding fr the missins center and church plants thrugh shrt term missins and clean water prjects. By raising awareness and funding in the United States we are drilling wells and prviding water strage fr lcal villages, regardless f their affiliatin t a church r ur rganizatin. JungleMaster Peru wns the equipment and emplys lcal villagers t drill wells, ensuring a duble benefit t the cmmunity; ecnmic and health. JungleMaster Ministries 6

8 Equipment List Backpack fr all yur clthing and equipment. Keep yur gear t a manageable size. Yu shuld be packed in such a way that yu can carry yur gear in and ut f bats r thrugh the jungle fr as much as tw miles. The likely hd is that yu ll nt have t carry yur equipment that far, but be prepared. Clthing / Packing Everything will get wet. The humidity alne is enugh t make everything yu have damp; when it rains, it s trrential, and if we get caught in the rain yur gear will get wet. Pack anything that needs t stay dry in Ziplc bags. Scks, underwear and electrnics are gd examples f the things t keep dry. My wife says she brught t many scks n her last trip. Here is what I wuld suggest alng with what she added. Scks; 3 pairs + Tank tps; ne per day Fast drying shrts/capri s/zip ff pants Sandals; ne pair Tennis shes; ne pair Lng sleeve shirt; ne + Underwear; ne pair per day Windbreaker Tee shirts; ne r tw Hat Sunglasses Fd/ Medicines It s nt always pssible t have scheduled meals; n the ferry r while visiting villages there ll be times that yu re hungry and it will be impssible t prepare a meal. Have with yu smething that yu can eat t get yu by until we are at in place t prepare a meal. Likewise, water will be yur lifebld. Have with yu tw water bttles and keep them full as much as pssible. Water is available in the villages, but safe ptable water gets hard t find utside f the villages. Als yu will be lsing salts and minerals frm thrugh perspiratin. Yu ll want t have a sprts drink pwder t replenish sme f thse lst electrlytes. Any prescriptin medicines yu ll need. In the case f nn-narctics, we can purchase them withut a prescriptin. 9 Fruit Leather Tent r Hammck Yu will need a persnal ne r tw man tent r hammck. The key is t get the maximum amunt f air circulatin by selecting a tent with as much screen as pssible. A hammck is anther pssibility. Hammcks are harder t get cmfrtable in, yet yu dn t need a mat t sleep n. At the missin center there are bunks but n mattresses. Even thugh the sleeping areas are screened at the missin center, yu will be glad t have a screened persnal area t keep the bugs ut and give yu a mre restful sleep. Yu will nt want t sit n the tilets n the ferry s a supply f handi-wipes are a gd idea als Persnal hand sanitizer / sani-wipes Many times after shaking hands and being fndled by little kids yu ll feel a need t wipe yur hands dwn and clean up. 11 Leadership There will be a representative f JungleMaster Ministries with the grup at all times. Luch Ris and Javier Sinarahua are the leaders representing JungleMaster Peru, Tm Clark is the Leader frm JungleMaster USA. These men take primary rles and respnsibility fr team safety and trip lgistics. Yur grup shuld have its wn leader whse respnsibility is the spiritual develpment and prject crdinatin fr yur team. JungleMaster will be wrking ne n ne with yur team leader t execute the trip and prvide fr the verall success f the trip. The leader fr yur grup may be yur Pastr, small grup leader r ther persn yu chse t take the primary rle fr yur trip. He/She needs t be like a hen prtecting her chicks; the last ne thrugh custms, the last ne t eat, last ne t bard the bat and the first in the water. The leader needs t have the gift f cmpassin and hspitality, must be aware f their team s weaknesses and strengths and ready t carry the burden f a weaker brther. It s pssible that ur leaders frm JungleMaster may intervene and take a team leader aside if they appear t be reluctant t lead. Everything that happens n this trip will be a reflectin n JungleMaster; the success f this experience is dependent n a prayerful cnnectin with Gd and ne anther. Peple that are perpetually unhappy and uncmfrtable shuld have been culled frm the grup in the US, but it s pssible that sme issue may be brewing that needs t be dealt with. One sur persn can change the dynamics f the entire grup and ruin the trip fr everyne. These issues need t be taken care f as sn as pssible. A lving wrd spken early n may slve the prblem withut damaging the team unity. A trip t the Amazn will be ht, sticky and uncmfrtable. It s imprtant that everyne is prepared t cwby up befre yu leave and let Gd wrk thrugh yur time n the missin field. Team Building and Prjects Building a sense f cmmunity amng yur team is critical in assuring a successful trip. Five t six mnths befre yur trip, yu shuld be preparing and meeting. Here are a few team meeting suggestins; Team verse t memrize and use as a fcal pint Read a missins related bk r a spiritual grwth bk tgether Help a nn-member f the church. Build a prch fr an elderly persn. Clean a yard, sme type f prject t benefit a nn-believer. Fundraising as a team, ideas and prjects. Spend time tgether ver fd and prayer. Begin praying fr ne anther. Fund Raising Any funds that are raised thrugh yur effrts must be directed thrugh JungleMaster Ministries and depsited by JungleMaster in rder t be cnsidered tax deductable. We cannt prduce receipts fr utside funds even if they are used by yu n yur trip. If yu have a friend r family member that JungleMaster Ministries 11

12 wants t help yu with spending mney then yu shuld make it clear that it will nt be tax deductable. All checks submitted t JungleMaster need t have JungleMaster as the payee. Tw party checks will nt be accepted. Refunds cannt be given n mney depsited t yur accunt beynd the amunt that yu persnally have prvided. Refunds can nly be made nce the team has been fully funded. JungleMaster cannt return funds if the trip fr yur team is under budget. N refunds can be made if yu cancel yur trip nce the plane tickets have been issued. Persnal Cnduct Peple in the jungle tend t be very quiet and subdued. Lad speech and aggressive mannerisms are cnsidered rude. They dn t yell at each ther frm acrss the street r a field. They wuld simply hld up a hand t get the attentin f smene. Smene that wuld be cnsidered highly energetic and very utging here wuld be thught f as immature, sftheaded r flish in the jungles f Peru. The dress cde is very relaxed in the jungle but in Lima yu wuld have t wear a tie in church. Shirts and shes are required in church in the jungle; it s very rude t remve yur shes in church even thugh sandals are OK. Sme hand gesture are cnsidered rude, clapping in church is great but dn t use ne hand in a fist and the ther ne pen when yu clap. This is the same as the Nrth American finger. The church services are very energetic yet yu shuldn t g as far as dancing. They will exhibit the Pentecstal filling f the Hly Spirit and bunce and speak in tngues; they will raise hands and sing at the tp f their lungs, yet, still be put ff by smene dancing while singing. Sarcasm is nt understd and is taken literally. Its best t keep it t yurself, and say exactly what yu mean. Even at that, the result f an ffence is that they ll ften chck it up as, they are grings and dn t understand the culture. They are extremely frgiving, yet we need t try t nt ffend when we have the ability t d s. Persnal Health Like the majrity f Latin America, yu must be very careful f what yu eat. Basically; if it hasn t been cked r yu didn t pick it ff the tree dn t eat it. Raw vegetables and ice in restaurants are extremely suspect. Bttled water is always the safest bet. Use it t brush yur teeth, nt the water ut f the faucet. Keep yur muth shut in the shwer; the key is nt t get unfiltered water in yur muth. In the cities be aware f splashed water frm the street. All water in the rivers, streets, r htels need t be treated as if its sewer water. JungleMaster Ministries 12

13 The fd and water at the missin center is safe, as we have wrked hard at training ur peple there n crss cntaminatin and hygiene. There are many restaurants that are Nrth American safe, ask befre eating salads r using ice in yur drinks. In case yur stmach begins t turn n yu, it s imperative that yu let yur leader knw that yu re nt well. Immediate actin needs t taken t crrect the issue. One Cipr tablet will kill the ffending rganism and an anti-diarrheal shuld be taken t crrect the results f the infectin. There is nthing wrse than suffering thrugh a 6 hur bat r airplane ride and having t g every 15 minutes. Yur leader shuld be asking yu daily hw yur health is and it s imprtant that yu re hnest and candid n hw yu re feeling. Any cuts r deep abrasins shuld be taken care f immediately. Clean with bttled water and use a tpical anti-bitic then cver with a clean bandage. Inspect ften fr any signs f infectin. Always use sunscreen, yu re n the equatr and sunburns happen in the first 30 minutes f expsure. A hat will be imprtant t keep the sun ff f yur head and ut f yur eyes. Likewise, gd sunglasses are imprtant t prtect yur visin. If yu get a high fever after yu return frm a trip t the jungle, let yur dctr knw that yu have traveled in the trpics, even as lng as a year after yur return. Yellw Fever vaccinatins are required. Hepatitis A and B are als imprtant but nt required. Malaria meds are very imprtant, be sure t cnsult with yur dctr abut the prper type and use. Dn t let these tips be verwhelming, remember that there are thusands f peple that live in the Amazn withut the benefit f the tls that we have t prtect urselves. They just happen t be brn and raised in that envirnment and are use t it. Immunizatins Check t make sure yur tetanus is up t date. It is suggested that yu be current n Hep A, and Hep B shts. Yellw Fever is als imprtant but Chlera wuld be ptinal. We ften knw where there are htspts in the jungle and will we avid thse areas. 14 The Jungle This may be the greatest surce f apprehensin fr peple asking abut a shrt term missin experience in the Amazn. They usually have ver-inflated fears f snakes and piranha, bugs and gnats. The fact is, it s a little like a wilderness trip in the nrthwest. Yu knw there are cugars and bears but the chances f seeing ne are relatively lw unless yu re lking fr them. Traveling alng the rivers will be a safe and fun experience; msquites are kept dwn by the wind n the river and the really wild stuff hangs ut several hundred yards inland. Yu will run int gnats and bugs, it helps t keep a heavy layer f deet r anther bug repellant n. T keep the bugs bites dwn it s a gd idea t wear sandals when in the villages, the thery is that the small bugs like t get between yur scks and skin and can take their time t bite yu. Sitting n sidewalks r in the grass is t invite bites. The lcals tend t squat with their rear n their calves when resting. If the water has been high there is a gd chance f finding snakes abut, ur leaders will tell yu t wear rubber bts. We have sets f bts at the missin center. There are lts f ther types f crawling things in the jungle. It s always smart t nt stick yur hand r feet anyplace that yu can t see int. Check yur bedding and bts befre yu get int them. Getting up at night t g t the bathrm will have a chance t meet lts f the jungle fauna. On several ccasins I have run int scrpins, frgs, cckraches, bats and tarantulas; nne f which are aggressive but I keep a flashlight and headlamp in my bunk s that I wn t be surprised n the jurney t the latrine. There s a saying in the jungle, if yu dn t like t see cckraches; then turn n the lights ten minutes befre ging int the rm. Never swim r g anywhere befre checking with ne f ur leaders and asking if it s safe. The majrity f the really bad stuff lives in slw stagnate water, the rivers are nrmal pretty safe t swim in. The key is t d as the lcals d. Just keep in mind; dn t screw arund with the wildlife. Slths lk like cuddly pets but their claws are like razrs and full f bacteria. Ask yur Peruvian leader befre handling any wildlife. The number ne cause f death f Americans in Latin America is getting hit by a car. Drivers in Peru wn t stp, slw dwn r swerve. Smetimes they even seem t aim fr the gring. Be aware f yur surrundings and dn t expect US traffic laws t help yu in Peru. Security Never leave anything unattended. A backpack will be gne as fast as yu can turn arund if it s nt held nt. When we are traveling we always have ne persn staying with ur stuff, whether ff lading nt t the side walk r bats and packing ur stuff pint t pint smene must always have an eye n the equipment. When ur bat is tied up n the beach, smene sleeps n the bat at night t keep it secure. The rule is simple: stay with yur stuff! This is a pr and pprtunistic sciety, yur equipment is wrth several mnths wages and the temptatin is t great if yu make it t easy. Dn t wave yur cash arund; there are several safe places where we can exchange mney. Dn t be tempted by the street crner mney exchange guys. Keep the majrity f yur mney in a safe place; have a small amunt available fr yur immediate use. In the big cities and in busy markets there are skilled pick-pckets arund. I keep my valuables in a waist puch under my shirt, I sleep with it, eat with JungleMaster Ministries 14

15 it n and all but swim with it, never is in my backpack r left behind. If it s ff me, smene else has it n. Have a cpy f yur passprt available, I even ne t myself s that it s pssible t get a new cpy frm any cmputer. Yur passprt is the mst valuable thing that yu have, keep gd care f it! Dn t wander ff alne: ever, stay in grups f tw r mre and let a leader knw where yu are ging. If yu get separated frm the grup stay put and we will find yu. If in the city and can take a taxi, get back t the htel and we will find yu there. When yu arrive in Peru yu will be issued a yellw piece f paper, it s yur temprary turist visa. If yu lse it, it will cst yu $50.00 t replace it and take an hur t get it dne. When cnfrnted with unique circumstances f security r safety, cnsult first with ur persnnel; Luch Ris and Javier Sinarahua have the last wrd n anything that is jungle safety related. Mney Current exchange rate is arund 3 sle t ne dllar. Yu can exchange mney almst anywhere in larger cities. In the villages yu wn t be able t exchange mney and yu will need small denminatins f the Peruvian sle. The mney exchangers will nly take near perfect bills. They will nt take them if they are trn r wrn. Dn t bring anything larger than $50.00 dllar bills. Yu can NOT cash traveler checks, dn t bring them. Only by waiting hurs in line at the bank can yu cash them and ten nly $ at a time. There are lts f cash machines in Iquits and Lima, be sure t tell yur bank yu will be in Peru befre yu travel r they will turn ff yur debit card.
