2 GREAT WHITE SHARKS FACT AND FICTION There are a lot of myths floating around about great white sharks. Here are a few of the most common ones and the truth behind them. MYTH: SHARKS ARE MAN-EATERS TRUTH: Great white sharks prey on seals and sea lions and only eat once every 4-6 weeks. Unfortunately, people (especially on surfboards) cast a similar silhouette on the surface. Attacks on humans are an unfortunate case of mistaken identity. MYTH: GREAT WHITES ARE THE LARGEST SHARK TRUTH: Whale sharks are the largest shark on earth, but great whites are the largest predatory shark. MYTH: GREAT WHITES ARE MINDLESS KILLERS TRUTH: Sharks are masters of ocean navigation and survival. They have a natural GPS system, traverse thousands of miles across open ocean, and use distinct hunting techniques depending on their prey. MYTH: ALL GREAT WHITES ARE ALIKE TRUTH: Each shark has its own personality and unique markings

3 WHY ARE THEY GREAT WHITE SHARKS GREAT WHITE SHARKS CAN GROW TO BE 20 FT / 6.1 M LONG AND WEIGH MORE THAN 5,000LBS / 2,260KG. They are the world s largest predatory fish, and females are generally larger than males. THE TOP SPEED OF A GREAT WHITE IS 35 MPH / 50 KPH. Their torpedo-like shape is built for speed. THE GREAT WHITE HAS NO KNOWN PREDATORS OTHER THAN ORCAS (KILLER WHALES).

4 7 THINGS MORE DANGEROUS THAN SHARKS You re more likely to die from a falling icicle or a lightning strike than a shark attack. In a list of animals most deadly to humans, sharks don t even rank in the top 10. COWS and HORSES are responsible for 40 deaths in the U.S. alone every year. HIPPOS kill an average of 2,900 people annually. DOGS are the fourthdeadliest animal on earth, killing 25,000 people each year. MOSQUITOES are the most deadly animal and cause the death of nearly 450,000 people worldwide every year. WORLDWIDE, THERE ARE FIVE TO TEN SHARK ATTACKS PER YEAR. The average person is more likely to die getting hit by a champagne cork or a coconut than a shark.

5 THE SHARKS OF GUADALUPE ISLAND Guadalupe Island is home to a world-famous population of sharks, including a mega-shark known as Deep Blue. Estimated to be 20 ft / 6.1 m long, Deep Blue became an Internet sensation in 2013 as one of the largest sharks ever seen. Isla Guadalupe is one of the best places in the world to photograph great whites. The visibility is fantastic ( ft / m on average) and there s a consistent shark population. MORE THAN 220 DIFFERENT SHARKS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AND TAGGED IN GUADALUPE.

6 SHARK CAGE DIVING WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW There are two cages. Once cage is attached to the diving platform at the surface level, another cage that is lowered to 20 ft / 6.1 m. You don t need scuba certification because you ll breathe off a hookah line from surface-supplied air. Non-divers and divers will both enjoy going in the deeper cage. There you will experience a 360-degree sensation of being surrounded by water on all sides. The sharks arrive, and you ll finally feel your trip was worth the effort. OUR EXPEDITION IS LIMITED TO ONLY TEN GUESTS, SO THERE S NO WAITING OR TAKING TURNS. It s possible to be with the sharks from morning to night. Typically guests spend 90 minutes in the cage. We break for warm shower, then it s back to the cage.
