World Vision engages with community leaders and members to determine what their shared priorities are, and may address needs in areas including food and agriculture, healthcare, water and sanitation, education, economic development, child protection and reducing disaster risks. For the traveller, Myanmar is an exciting destination, but for the vast majority of Myanmar s children, life in their country is a struggle. World Vision has played an important role in the recent history of Myanmar, coming to the people s aid following the devastating Cyclone Nargris in 2008, which killed more than 100,000 people. World Vision plays an ongoing role in Myanmar helping to protect vulnerable street children and child soldiers and supporting communities by expanding microfinance activities and increasing access to education and medical care. This is your chance to discover Myanmar including Bagan, the Shan Hills, Inle Lake as well as Yangoon and Mandalay where we visit a World Vision project in each city. The funds that you raise before taking this adventure will be directed towards World Vision s work in Myanmar. Child Protection Policy All participants on this trip will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check through World Vision. This check is to ensure that members of the group do not have a history of childrelated offences, and is mandatory in order to visit World Vision s projects on this trip. It s a sort of mini Bagan and you probably find yourself alone, feeling like the first foreigner ever to discover this place, surrounded by temples. After visiting Paleik we continue to Popa. 5 Responsible Travel The environments we travel through are fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions were the proud recipients of the inaugural Australian National Travel Industry s Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook. This detailed guide to responsible and sustainable travel is provided to all World Expeditions clients before they travel. Please ask your consultant if you have not received your copy of our award winning book. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website Elephant Welfare For centuries throughout Asia the elephant has been revered, as well as utilised for the purpose of logging. However in the late 80s the use of elephants in the logging industry was banned because of overlogging, and so mahouts turned to the tourism industry for income. As a result elephant tourism experiences have popped up throughout Asia and it can be difficult for travellers to resist the temptation to ride these beautiful and incredibly intelligent creatures. In recent years there has been much research into the impact of tourism activities on elephants wellbeing. From the brutal taming of baby elephants called the crush to ongoing confinement and the mere fact that the elephants spine is not meant to carry heavy weights there are many instances where incorrect management results in a negative impact for the elephants. Because of this World Expeditions discourages travellers from riding on the back of elephants and we do not include elephant rides in our itineraries throughout our global program and across all World Expeditions brands. There are a few carefully selected elephant orphanages and sanctuaries in South East Asia and India that we include in some of our itineraries because we believe their operations put the elephants wellbeing before the tourist experience. Trip grading DAY 6 In Bagan Today you have the option to take a hot air balloon trip over the Plains of Bagan (this must be booked in advance, please contact World Expeditions for details) or take a half day bike ride through the ancient temples of Bagan. The ancient temple ruins are spread out randomly in between toddy palms and bamboo huts, the scenery is beautiful and best appreciated from handle bar level. During this half day tour on a bike, your guide will show you some of the most spectacular sceneries of ancient temples and the best of all is that you can stop any time, any minute to make some beautiful pictures. Overnight at Bagan Hotel. meals: B DAY 7 Bagan Heho Inle Lake Following breakfast the group transfers to the airport for the flight to Heho. Upon arrival in Heho we tour the Ruins of Indein and enjoy home-cooked food and the Floating Gardens. In the south of the lake the ruins of Indein are certainly worth a visit. Partly covered by vegetation the area looks like a pagoda forest. We walk about 1 hour to enjoy a fantastic view over the lake. A homemade cooked lunch is served by a local family in their house. We continue towards the Nam Pan village for a very interesting trip going local with a small canoe. Whenever you are tired peddling yourself we continue by motorboat back to your hotel. Overnight Inle Lake Hotel. meals: B,L,D DAY 8 Inle Lake Heho Yangon Inle Lake in southern Shan State is a vast natural lake surrounded by traditional Shan villages. On the lake itself the Intha people have been living for many centuries in villages built entirely on stilts. Today you ride a private motorboat around the lake. Discover it s natural beauty, visit the floating gardens, see some of the famous leg rowers, and have a cup of tea at a local family s house. On and around the lake, traditional markets are held in different villages on a five-day rotating schedule. Today we take you to visit one of these colourful markets frequented by Shan and Pao people. We also visit a local cheroot factory (where the Burmese cigars are made), floating tomato gardens, Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, Intha Heritage house - where the Burmese cats are bred. Transfer to the airport for the flight to Yangon. Transfer to hotel to freshen up before a dinner at the Thaing Yin Thar Restaurant. Overnight at Yangon Hotel. meals: B,L,D DAY 9 World Vision Projects in Yangon After breakfast we travel to World Vision s Thanlyin Area Development Program, north of Yangon. Here we ll see firsthand the incredible types of projects our fundraising efforts are supporting, like the establishment of Child Protection Action Groups, Early Child Care and Development (ECCD) centres, new health committees, Maternal & Newborn Child Health activities, and capacity building activities for Community Based Organisations (CBOs) through small business training and income generation activities. This is your opportunity to come alongside project staff and locals, and experience life in the communities World Vision supports. In the afternoon, we bid farewell to our new friends at the project and return to Yangon. The evening is free at leisure to explore this beautiful town or to relax and reflect on a rewarding day. Overnight at Yangon Hotel. meals: B DAY 10 In Yangon, trip concludes Our trip will officially conclude after breakfast. If you are departing Yangon, transfer to the airport. meals: B This itinerary is subject to change with any modifications in Community regulations as well as Governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control World Expeditions Travel Group - Donna Lawrence 1/2/2016 7:26:31 AM
6 Introductory These trips involve trekking or walking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace and should never be misinterpreted to mean they are easy trips. These trips do not spend time at altitudes above 4000m and are usually a week in duration. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trek. For trekking, hill walking with a daypack in variable weather conditions is also recommended. For a cycling adventure, road cycling twice a week for three months prior to departure is recommended. Adventure Travel By its very nature Charity Challenges involve an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are suitably fit, flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your charity representative or one of our team. Important Note These trip notes represent the most current information for this itinerary, and may supersede any other supplied information, including but not limited to the itinerary and price. The itinerary should be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature and other circumstances beyond our control. Fundraising Support There are a number of ways you can approach your fundraising: 1. You can choose to pay for the travel costs yourself and just fundraise the donation of $1000 to World Vision. 2. You can opt to fundraise the entire amount the travel cost and the charity donation. You must make sure that funds raised for the travel cost are done so independent of the charity and that donors understand that their donation will be directed towards your travel expenses and are not tax deductible. 3. You may choose to pay for the entire amount yourself and claim the charity donation component as a personal taxdeductible donation to your charity. 4. Lastly you can attempt to fundraise as much as you can in the given time and personally fund the balance of the total. Once you have registered on this challenge you will receive our comprehensive Confirmation Kit that includes a Fundraiser s Guidebook, a great resource for fundraising ideas and support, a Welcome Letter from World Vision and an authority to fundraise in their name. Suggested Extensions Yangon and the Golden Rock Angkor Wat Country Information Also known as Burma, Myanmar is an Asian nation bounded by Tibet in the north by Laos, China and Thailand in the east, on the south by the Bay of Bengal and to the west by India and Bangladesh. The Irrawaddy River is the country s most dominant natural feature as well as a string of mountains in the north which rise as high as 5900 metres, with Hkakabo Razi being the highest peak in South East Asia. While Myanmar lies at the crossroads of China and India, it s ethnicity is a blend of both civilizations but also interspersed with Myanmar native characteristics. The country s name has progressed from Burma, which is linked to just one of the ethnic groups, to Myanmar to satisfy an all encompassing title. There are 135 different ethnic groups that make up the population. Buddhism strongly influences daily life and this is demonstrated by the number of pagodas and monasteries strewn throughout the country. The people are known for their friendliness and hospitality. The language spoken is predominantly Myanmar (Bamar) while ethnic minorities speak Chin, Kachin, Kayin, Shan and another 135 hilltribe dialects. Being once a British colony English is also widely spoken. Climate Most of Myanmar lies within the Tropic Zone. The hot season extends from March until October, and the cool season, from November through to February. Temperatures during these seasons range from 17 to 40 C (62 to 104 F) in lower Myanmar. Temperatures in upper Myanmar are usually less and mountainous regions can at times be cold. The country receives practically all its yearly rainfall between midmay and October, the period of the Southwest Monsoon. Myanmar is in the northern hemisphere so it is also winter from November to February. You will need to bring some warm clothing for early mornings everywhere, and especially for higher areas like Shan State (Kalaw, Inle Lake, Pindaya). The hotels in these areas are NOT equipped with heating or fireplaces so be prepared for some colder nights World Expeditions Travel Group - Donna Lawrence 1/2/2016 7:26:31 AM
