Campers enjoy a refreshing blend of recreation and scenery, combined with the peace and quiet of the wilderness. Stretching up to the Canadian border with 97 percent of the land covered in forest, the Great North Woods region offers some of the best hunting, hiking, rock climbing, ATVing, and snowmobiling in New Hampshire. Here, trails outnumber highways and wildlifewatching becomes a sport of its own, with the moose population upward of 3,500. The Connecticut lakes and the upper Connecticut River offer great trout and salmon fishing. Scenic drives are the region s leading attraction, so bring a camera to capture the natural splendor. Head up Route 3 to view rolling farmland along the Connecticut River, and enjoy a picnic at Beaver Brook Falls in Colebrook. Drive across Route 26 and you ll pass the historic Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch, where many first-in-the-nation primary votes were cast in the Ballot Room. Then head to Lake Umbagog, where bald eagles nest. Further south on Route 16 is Thirteen Mile Woods, a stretch of untouched forest along the Androscoggin River, a favorite for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Invasive insects and diseases in dead and dying wood threaten our native trees and forests. If you move firewood, you could be giving these pests a free ride to new territory. Every camper, cabin owner, and recreationist should leave their firewood at home and obtain it near their destination that could make a long-term difference in the health of our forests and the quality of our recreational experiences. LEARN TO LIVE WITH BEARS Bear/camper conflicts are most often created by people who (knowingly or innocently) trigger a natural reaction on the part of the bear that sometimes results in damage to personal property. To prevent conflicts with bears, follow a few simple rules: 1 Be Very Careful With Food Scraps. 2. Clean Up After Every Meal or Snack. 3. Do Not Dump Scraps of Meat, Food or Fat Drippings Into Your Fire. 4. Learn the Schedule of Trash Pick-Up In Your Area. 5. Do Not Cook Food Or Eat Inside Your Tent. 6. Hang Food At Least 10 Feet Above the Ground on a Limb That Cannot Support a Bear s Weight. Do not attempt to feed, tease or approach any bear that you do see. View bears from a safe distance. Washington Auto Road! Alton Weagle had a passion for Mt. Washington. To show his passion, he climbed the Mt. Washington Auto Road in a number of unique ways: by car, on foot, walking backwards, blindfolded and finally pushing a wheelbarrow full of sugar just to name a few.
