2 World Heritage KwaZulu Natal Guided Walking Holidays KwaZulu Natal KwaZulu Natal is the traditional home of the Zulu tribe. Bordering the Indian Ocean, it is South Africa's easternmost province. Inland are wetlands, the Battlefields of the Boer and Zulu wars, and the towering peaks of the Drakensberg, the highest mountain in South Africa. The variety of landscape is astonishing, the history fascinating, and the wildlife bountiful. Flying into Durban we head north to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park. Here we have four days of game walks and drives accompanied by rangers with the chance to see giraffe, impala, nyala, warthog, white rhino, wildebeest and zebra. Boat safaris bring us close to crocodiles, hippos and a wealth of birdlife. We head inland to Dundee, a small town rich in Boer heritage, where British troops withdrew from Zulu land after their defeat at the battle of Isandlwana during the 1879 Anglo Zulu War. The first shots of the Second Anglo Boer war were fired in Dundee in what later became known as the Battle of Talana. We have the whole day with a specialist military guide who will bring the battlefields to life. We continue towards the Drakensberg Mountains. Our first centre is at Cathedral Peak in the Ukhalhamba- Drakensberg National Park. The Drakensberg's rugged escarpment provides a dramatic background to the gentle green and rolling hills of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. We can walk straight from our hotel out onto the peaks and buttresses of the surrounding mountains. Cavern Berg is in a stunning location on the edge of the Royal Natal National Park, dominated by the Amphitheatre, a crescent-shaped basalt-topped wall four miles wide which soars to a height of 3000m. Once again, we head straight out on foot from our hotel into the amazing mountain scenery. HOLIDAY GRADE This is a grade 5 walking holiday where you can expect hiking and Game viewing in four distinct environments. There will be alternative walks between 3-6 hours in length. Some days will be easier but still rewarding whereas some may be at the higher end of the grade. Many of the wildlife game drives and walks may require a very early morning start, but the experience is worth it! You'll enjoy walks alongside the Indian Ocean, then tour explore the noted Hluhluwe Wildlife Reserve in safari cars to seek and photograph "The Big Five" wild animals, including the largest remaining groups of white rhino. At Hluhluwe and the Battlefields, walks will be shorter to see sites of interest and absorb the natural beauty of our surroundings as well as the local culture and history. The hotels in the Drakensberg are situated at 1500m. Depending on the walks chosen by the leader and guides you may choose to walk at the top of the grade up to an altitude of 2000m. The total ascents and descents can be up to 750m. Most of the paths are good fixed trails but there may be some steep and rough uneven ground. Our walks may cross mountain streams and perhaps we will see herds of Eland: almost certainly we will have the chance to sample the local trout. This holiday will bring you close to nature making for an unforgettable experience.

3 Proposed Itinerary Our bottom line is happy travellers, and to that end we trust our tour leaders to use the itinerary below as a basis for providing you with a great holiday. We expect our leaders to make adjustments to the itinerary if the weather, group ability or other local conditions make that necessary. There are normally more options available to our leaders than those listed below and one or more of these options may well be chosen. All distances, heights & timings are approximate. In flight meals, if appropriate, will be advised in your final travel documents Day: 1 - In Flight () Depart London Heathrow on the overnight British Airways flight to Durban via Johannesburg. Day: 2 - Hluhluwe (D) On arrival in Durban, we travel north into Zululand for 5 nights in a hotel or lodge in the Hluhluwe area, our base for exploring the varied character of this fascinating region. Day: 3 - Hluhluwe (B,D) Today we are guests of the Mbonise Cultural Experience and shall get a glimpse into the daily rural life of a Zulu community. During the afternoon we will visit the St Lucia Wetland Park and take a walk in False Bay Reserve. Day: 4 - Hluhluwe (B,D) Today we shall walk on an Indian Ocean beach with free time for lunch in the town of St Lucia, the perfect spot to sample the local fish and seafood. In the afternoon we join a boat cruise on the St Lucia Estuary to view the bird life and to look for hippopotami. Day: 5 - Hluhluwe (B,L,D) Today we spend much of the day in Hluhluwe- Umfolozoi Game Park in 4x4 vehicles. We may have a braai (barbeque) lunch on this day. Day: 7 - Dundee (B,D) Today we travel inland via the Battle of Blood River site to Dundee for 2 nights. Day: 8 - Dundee (B,D) A full day sightseeing and walking amongst the Anglo-Zulu battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift led by a local guide. Day: 9 to 12 - Drakensberg (B,D) Today we head, via Ladysmith, to our first centre in the Drakensberg - the beautiful Cathedral Peak region where we spend three great days walking directly from our hotel. The walks that we are likely to include whilst discovering the Cavern Berg area are as follows: CANNIBAL CAVERN AND CAMEL'S HUMP This is a great walk affording the opportunity to visit an enormous cavern and to learn something of the history and legend of the area. The walk offers magnificent views of the Amphitheatre' from Surprise Ridge' with panoramic views from the summit of Camel's Hump' for those who make it to the top! (Some minor scrambling is necessary). 6 miles (9.2km), ascent / descent 500m, 4 hours. THE SILENT WOMAN VIA JACKAL RIDGE This is a fairly easy walk and does not go very high but provides good views of the surrounding peaks. Most of the walk is on easy terrain. There is no scrambling or exposure of any kind. 6½ miles (10.5km), ascent / descent 400m, 3½ hours. SUGARLOAF Day: 6 - Hluhluwe (B,D) We enjoy a walking safari around the lodge, here we may be lucky enough to see Giraffe, Wildebeest and even Zebra!. Late afternoon we will enjoy a sunset safari in Hluhluwe / Imfolozi National Park.

4 This walk will take the clients to the highest point that we will reach on foot on their holiday. The views from the summit of Sugar Loaf are spectacular towards the Drakensberg escarpment and the Amphitheatre', the former homeland of QwaQwa and the Metsi Matsho dam. The first part is quite easy, climbing relatively gently but steadily on a good path. Then comes a rougher section on uneven steps and after that, a non-exposed but taxing scramble up a gully. This can be a challenging walk, but there are opt out options to make it more manageable. Day: 13 to 17 - Drakensberg (B,L,D) From Cathedral Peak we transfer to the Cavern Berg Resort, approximately one hour by road. Here we spend four days walking in the spectacular mountain scenery and we shall visit the Royal Natal National Park. This is a demanding walk as it involves a steep ascent early in the day, It is at the very top of the grade. However, this walk is often described as the walking highlight of the holiday as it takes in the very interesting geological formation of the mushroom rock' and on a clear day affords the most spectacular view of Cathedral Peak, the Bell, the Inner Horn and the Outer Horn as well as panoramic views of the Drakensberg range beyond the confines of the Cathedral Peak boundary. The walk also affords the opportunity to view very pretty, small mountain waterfalls as well as the very beautiful Ribbon Falls'. Baboons, mountain reedbuck and eland are often seen on this off the beaten track' route. 6 miles (9.7km), ascent / descent 640m, 4 hours. Day: 18 - In Flight (B) We transfer from the Cavern Berg Resort to Johannesburg Airport for our return flight to UK. Day: (No Meals) Arrive UK Here are some examples of some of the walks that we are likely to enjoy whilst discovering the Cathedral Peak National Park: BLUE POOLS This is a grade low level walk and the path is easy to follow. This route will take you into the valley of the Umlambonja River, and is not demanding and involves very little ascent and descent. This is a great walk for the birdwatchers and there is a good possibility of seeing baboons. 4 miles (6km), ascent / descent 300m, 3 hours. RAINBOW GORGE This can be a demanding walk, however it is a linear walk, and offers those who do not want to tackle the scrambling in the gorge, the opportunity to turn back. Initially the path is easy to follow, but once the path descends into the gorge, to proceed becomes demanding and involves minor scrambling and boulder hopping. This is one of a very few opportunities to walk in indigenous forest on this holiday. The waterfalls and the running river provide for beautiful picnic spots and the ultimate reward, if you make it that far, is the magnificent sight of the hanging boulder'. 6½ miles (10.5km), ascent / descent 400m, 4 hours. MUSHROOM ROCK, THE TARN AND A DESCENT VIA RIBBON FALLS Walks & Excursions This holiday is operated at our grade 5 walking category and entails some energetic days, although the daily walking time is less than five hours. Some days will be spent leisurely walking around areas of special or historical interest. We shall walk on fixed trails, some of which are undulating and uneven under foot. The walking on this tour can be fairly demanding depending on the season. Optional Excursions A range of local excursions and activities may be available to book at your destination through a local operator. We have no involvement in such activities or excursions which are not run, supervised or controlled in any way by us. Your contract will be with the local activity supplier and we accept no responsibility for their actions or omissions. Leaders Evening Briefing Each evening, your tour leader will discuss with you the programme for the following day. If you do not wish to join the organised group programme, please let the leader know. Local Transport Costs All local transport costs in conjunction with the advertised activity programme are included in the holiday cost. Personal Expenditure All organised excursions mentioned in the itinerary are included in the holiday cost. There is very little additional cost to be paid locally in regards to the noted itinerary, however if you wish to take any optional excursions, or visit sites not mentioned, these will be at your own expense.it is difficult to estimate an allowance for spending money, however about for the trip should be sufficient for

5 lunches, drinks, any optional excursions. Please also see our section on tipping which will be in addition to this. Hotel drinks, particularly imported spirits can be more expensive, but local spirits, beers, ciders and African wines are very good value for money. You will need to allow extra for souvenirs and gifts. Major purchases can often be charged to a credit card account. Tipping Although entirely at your own discretion, tipping is an important aspect of tourism and hospitality life and expectations are fairly high. In order to simplify tipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff & to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by us together with, if you wish, a contribution from you, which he/she will collect during the holiday. Small Groups Group Size Coming from all walks of life your fellow travelling companions will share your desire to discover great things and have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy their infectious enthusiasm, camaraderie and great dinner conversation. Our maximum group size for guided walks between grade 5 and grade 8 is 18 persons. Tour Leaders Your tour leader makes the world of difference to your holiday and ours are as passionate about discovering the world on foot as you are. They're resourceful, organised and widely travelled. They will handle all the local administration and other needs that might arise to ensure that you don't have to worry about planning your days and you can enjoy your holiday. Although leading group holidays, they won't forget that every group is made up of individuals. Each tour leader has their own individual style, talents and professional backgrounds and all are trained, qualified, experienced and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting and inspiring as possible. On most holidays of 7 nights and over, the tour leader will have one day's break a week, enabling you to have a 'free' day too!

6 Travel Details Flights are from London Heathrow to Durban via Johannesburg and returning from Johannesburg to London Heathrow with British Airways and Comair. There might be a wait of several hours at Johannesburg airport between flights. As Durban is a domestic airport, you are required to enter South Africa in Johannesburg, passing through Passport Control' and Customs'. On check in at London Heathrow you will receive one boarding pass, which is for your Heathrow to Johannesburg flight only. If you have checked in on line you might have boarding passes for the London Heathrow-Johannesburg flight as well as the onward flight to Durban. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: On arrival into Johannesburg ALL passengers transferring to a domestic flight MUST clear IMMIGRATION, reclaim their bags and then clear CUSTOMS. After clearing CUSTOMS you are required to make your way to the Domestic Terminal (TERMINAL B). Exit the Customs Hall and turn LEFT. Take the escalator up to the next level and follow the signs for Terminal B. (PLEASE NOTE that South African luggage trolleys have been designed to clamp on' to the escalator.) Check in for your onward flight. You must do this even if you already have a boarding pass. The check-in staff will tag your luggage for your onward flight. The BA Comair check-in desks are usually situated at the far end of the check-in hall towards the Security Control. For all those booking a flight or rail inclusive holiday, details of your travel arrangements and baggage allowance will be confirmed in your travel documents, sent to you approximately 10 days prior to departure. Land Only If you are joining and leaving at your holiday overseas we assume, unless you advise us otherwise, that you will join and leave the holiday from your hotel. Although airport transfers are not included for those making their own independent travel arrangements, if you wish to join the group at the overseas airport, depending on your flight arrival time, you may be able to be included on the group's transfer. Please contact us at least 5 weeks before departure for more details. Please note that your flight must arrive within 30 minutes of the group flight to be able to join the group transfer. We also need your flight number, arrival time and departure point so that the group leader is able to meet up with you. If you wish to organise your own flights from a non- UK or provincial airport or travel by rail or car to your holiday destination, 'no-travel' reductions are often available. Please contact us for details. Before finalising any independent travel arrangements, please check with us first - especially if doing so 12 weeks or more before your intended date of travel. If you do intend to join your holiday locally please do tell us at least 14 weeks in advance. Passports and Visas For entry into South Africa, a passport is required and must be valid for at least 30 days after your planned departure. Your passport should have at least two blank pages when you present it at immigration to enter or leave South Africa. A visa is not required by holders of British passports bearing the inscription 'British Citizen' for holidays less than 90 days. Holders of non-british passports should check with the South African Embassy or their nearest consulate regarding requirements. General Passport & Visa Advice You should have at least 6 months left on your passport from your date of arrival. If you renewed a 10 year passport before it expired, extra months

7 may have been added to your passport's expiry date. These extra months will not count. Please ensure to regularly check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for updates on passport requirements leading up to and after Brexit negotiations or contact us for more assistance. Foreign and Commonwealth Brexit Information for Passports: Non British Passport holders should consult the host countries embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements. It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to your home country. Passport and visa requirements can change at any time. Each rondavel-inspired room are equipped with double or twin beds with en-suite bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge, and telephone. Hairdryers can be obtained from reception and the use of a safe can be arranged with reception. There is an outdoor swimming pool, plenty of lush greenery to relax amongst and animals (such as monkeys or impala) can often be found roaming the grounds. Rorke's Drift Hotel is located in the heart of the Battlefields and on the River Buffalo. There is a spacious lounge, bar, and dining area offering wonderful views of Zululand and towards Isandlwana. The rooms are equipped with en-suite bathroom, a fan / heater, a balcony or patio and tea and coffee making facilities. The Cathedral Peak Hotel is a long-time favourite and one of the finest hotels in our portfolio. The hotel is situated inside the Cathedral Peak National Park, showcasing some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere in the Drakensberg. Rooms are equipped with either twin or king-sized beds. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, tea/coffee making facilities, television, fan, heater, telephone and a private veranda. There are plenty of facilities to keep you occupied when you are not walking including an outdoor swimming pool, indoor wellness facilities, a games room, various walking trails, a variety of outdoor sports, a gym and a golf course. A very close runner up has to be the Cavern Berg Resort, located in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg, surrounded by towering mountains, forests and streams. The rooms are set in a lush garden landscape, and rooms are equipped with a hairdryer, tea, and coffee making facilities. They have a small spa area situated on the edge of the Fern Forest, an outdoor pool and various sports activities that can be organised at reception. Wifi access is available at each hotel and is free to use.

9 Breakfasts and dinners are included in the holiday charge. Lunches are included during your stay at the Cavern Berg Resort' and two lunches are included in Hluhluwe. Allow approximately R115 ( ) for a substantial packed meal, available from the lodge and hotels and to be ordered the previous evening. You will have the opportunity to purchase items for picnic lunches at local supermarkets but PLEASE NOTE that South African supermarkets do not always offer ready made' sandwiches.

10 Footwear Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded rubber sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks. We recommend that you either wear your walking boots or shoes or pack them and some waterproofs in your hand luggage as in the unlikely event that your hold luggage is delayed, you will still be able to participate in the holiday programme. Outdoor activities are always more enjoyable if you are prepared. The following list is a basic guideline that will enhance your experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. For the game drive/walk section of the holiday we recommend you bring clothing that is in keeping with the natural environment; natural, earthy tones work best such as browns, khaki and beige. Bright colours can scare off game, as these are colours that are not ones that they are generally familiar with. For the evening and early morning game drives a fleece or jacket and long trousers are recommended as it can become chilly during these periods and the vehicle's that we travel in can be open to the elements. Please refer to the details given about malaria precautions and the advice given on wearing long sleeve tops and long trousers and closed shoes. We recommend that you bring a torch with you, which will be useful when staying at the tented camps, where light is usually solar powered and poor or no lighting will be available in the evenings. Binoculars will also be useful for wildlife spotting whilst on the game drives. A basic kit list is likely to include: - Waterproof jacket (Goretex or similar) and trousers - Lightweight, quick drying trousers - Several polo shirts, T-shirts or specialist walking shirts - Fleece jacket - Comfortable walking socks - Warm hat and gloves (if appropriate) - Sun hat, sunglasses, lip salve and high SPF sun block - Swimwear (if appropriate) - Day sack (25 litre capacity) to comfortably carry the kit you'll take out for the day - Strong polythene bags to keep the contents of your daypack dry - Water bottle(s) - at least 1 litre capacity - Basic first aid kit (plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic etc) - Insect repellent - Plastic container and reusable cutlery for your picnic lunches - Walking/trekking poles (if applicable) Trekking Poles Many of our clients find walking poles hugely beneficial when walking. 12 Currency The currency used in South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR). Electricity In South Africa the electricity is supplied at V A/C. If you wish to use electrical equipment you will need a three-pin plug with round pins. More information can be found at Health No compulsory immunisations are required for visits to South Africa. You should be up to date with the usual immunisations recommended in the UK. Diphtheria and Hepatitis A immunisations are recommended. You might also like to consider immunisation against Hepatitis B, Rabies, Tetanus, Cholera and Typhoid. There is low to no risk of Malaria in South Africa, apart from the Kruger National Park where the risk is high. There is a risk of schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection (also known as bilharzia) that is transmitted to humans through contact with fresh water. Please seek advice from your doctor or travel clinic. Health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Please ensure that as a minimum your travel insurance policy covers you for medical expenses, mountain rescue and emergency repatriation in the event of illness or injury, and that your policy provides adequate cover for the activities, included and optional, you are likely to participate in during your holiday.
