Welcome to ADVANCE Many thanks for deciding on ADVANCE. We are one of the world s leading paraglider manufacturers based in Switzerland. Since 1988 we have consistently followed our own ideas and concepts, both in development and production. We hope that your BIBETA 5 will bring you many rewarding hours in the air, and enable you to share your passion for flying with your passengers. With a BIBETA 5 you and your guest will lift off effortlessly for a stress-free flying experience. The excellent takeoff qualities, together with efficient turning and landing, distinguish the BIBETA 5 and make it an absolutely reliable partner. Compared with the previous BIBETA the robustness stays the same, but takeoff behaviour, weight and handling have been markedly improved.
Getting started This guide gives you a brief look at how to deal with the BIBETA 5, but it does not replace the official manual, in which you will find detailed instructions about setting up, flying qualities, manoeuvres, maintenance and service. The manual is ready to download on
You as the pilot Share the joy and fun of your passion as the BIBETA 5 tandem pilot you and your passenger can takeoff without stress for a reassuring feelgood flight. The BIBETA 5 brings the leisure pilot much fun and safety; for the professional it makes an effective and reliable workhorse for daily use.
Delivery and basic set up Every ADVANCE paraglider has to be flown by the dealer before delivery, and checked for correct basic settings. Any alteration to the paraglider has the result of negating the certification. The length of the brake lines should not be altered. They are set at the factory so that, with brakes fully released, the trailing edge remains unbraked in fully accelerated flight. BIBETA 5 delivery includes: EASYPACK rucksack Inner bag Compression strap Spreaders (hard, soft or soft adjustable) Repair kit Mini windsock Getting-started booklet
Trimmers The BIBETA 5 has an accelerate system in the shape of trimmers. These achieve a speed increase of ca. 5 km/h. This gives you a larger safety margin in strong wind, and it also makes the glider more user-friendly when the tandem is used for carrying light passengers. And, not least, using the trimmers in combination with big ears (Vary-Grip- System) is a very relaxed and comfortable way of getting down fast for your passenger. Info Always make sure that the trimmer positions are symmetrical. When the trimmers are open the brake handle positions will be significantly higher, and the brake force is higher because of the higher airspeed. The BIBETA 5 has high canopy stability and you can fly through light turbulence while accelerated.
You can also steer and stabilise the glider with the brakes while flying through turbulence with the trimmers open. Tip We recommend that you circle in thermals with closed trimmers. You will then be close to best stability and minimum sink.
Big ears with the Vary-Grip-System The BIBETA 5 has split A-risers which make it easy to activate big ears. A clamp (Vary- Grip-System 1 ) also makes it possible to fix the outer A-lines in big ears and leave the glider in this configuration for as long as you like. The lines can be pulled down as far as the marks and fixed again in the clamp. Info It is not essential to pump the ears out for landing, particularly in strong wind. Brake pressure provides enough pressure in the ears to ensure that sufficient wing area will be available for landing. The paraglider can be steered normally with the brakes while big ears are applied.
1
Spreaders The BIBETA 5 comes with hard, soft or soft adjustable spreaders. Hard spreaders The reserve connections run above the pilot s spreader arms, and are attached in the middle of the support, under the main glider attachments. Soft spreaders The reserve connections run underneath the pilot s spreader arms, and are attached to the loops provided. Info The pilot s arms of the soft adjustable spreaders have spring-loaded clips so that his support height can be adjusted to suit the passenger s height. If you are too tired in flight to shorten these you can make life easier by alternating pulls
on the left and right tapes, using the loops. At the same time you can take the weight off the relevant side by weightshifting. soft adjustable spreaders
Takeoff The BIBETA 5 needs only modest effort to pull up. Lead the glider up with the two inner, wide A-risers by pronounced forward leaning, but without too strong a tug on the risers, until the canopy is nicely above you. During the pull up any directional corrections should be made by walking decisively under the wing, without steering with the brakes. After the correction phase and a satisfactory look at the wing a few steps with pronounced leaning forward will achieve a takeoff, even in little wind. Tips Because of the excellent BIBETA 5 takeoff behaviour you should remember to only give the wing a modest pull up impulse, even in little wind Before taking off make sure that the trimmers are closed.
Landing BIBETA 5 precise handling and very long brake travel make landings very straightforward. Always make a proper landing circuit with a defined final approach, without rolling or pitching. As the ground approaches brake the BIBETA 5 continuously from full speed, going through to full brake. By making this kind of fully flared landing the groundspeed can be brought to zero and the passenger set down gently.
One size fits all The BIBETA 5 comes in one size because it tolerates different wing loadings very well and has a wide takeoff weight range 120 kg to 225 kg. It flies best within the range of 150 kg to 190 kg. But even at the upper and lower limits this wing only reacts a little to different loadings. Because the BIBETA 5 is very easy to takeoff getting airborne at low wing loadings poses no problem, and even at the top limit of the recommended range the BIBETA 5 lands softly and safely in no wind.
Flying with a wet glider Flying with a completely wet wing raises the risk of deep stall. Deep stall is often the result of a combination of factors. A wet canopy weighs more. The increased weight results in a higher angle of attack, always bringing the wing closer to the deep stall boundary. Water drops on the fabric also have a bad effect on the laminar boundary layer near the leading edge, and this significantly lowers the maximum lift coefficient achievable. To avoid the risk of deep stall with a wet wing the glider should be braked as little as possible, and big ears never used. If the glider still goes into deep stall recovery can only be made by accelerating with the trimmers.

You can find more details online. Your BIBETA 5 must have a check every 24 months, or every 12 months with intensive use.
