This may be a rare opportunity to observe the Absaroka Yeti in the wild, and is being granted because of the commitment of Scouts to the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace principles. Scouts will compete on an Ice Age course, learn ice carving, compete with snow snakes, and have a chance to come together in winter fellowship. Your team needs to register and provide a TEAM NAME. Using a sled that is provided by Bill Otto, units will test their ice age skills on a course that includes these things but this might not be all you encounter! 1. Hang a bear bag also important to keep food away from the Yeti. (need adults) 2. Yeti survival -The Absaroka Yeti behaves like a black bear. See YETI SAFETY in this guide for more information. 3. Shooting Accuracy increases the Montana Acorns you collect. Every Scout can shoot. (need 5 range people) 4. Ice Scout Rescue save the scout who falls into the water when you try an ice crossing. Unit will get points for showing good scout ice age readiness. Camp Torches Snow Snakes Snow Brick Something Competition Put out and keep lit Friday and Saturday night the camp torches. This helps keep the Yetis away from the bathrooms and there high traffic camp areas. Torches and fuel provided. Try your hand at this event where your troop makes snow snake and competes to see who can throw the snake the furthest. See the appendix for the directions! There will be at least one District snow snake so you can use that, but of course having your own snake is better! Snakes judged on distance as well as craftsmanship. Snow Snakes is a game where Scouts take a carved piece of wood, generally in the shape of a ski, and hurl it across the snow to see whose will slide the furthest. The piece of wood must six feet long. More detailed directions on making the snake and the history of snow snakes is available at the end of this document. There will be one or two snow snake areas, depending on interest and help. The distance competition area and the accuracy competition area. Practice throws are not allowed in the competition troughs. You will have to go elsewhere to practice. 1. All decisions by the judges are final 2. Each Scout s best of two throws in the competition trough will count towards the patrol score. Scoring will be based on the total average distance for a patrol. The longest average patrol throw will win the distance competition. 3. Each Scout will get two attempts on the accuracy competition trough. The Scout in the patrol that comes closest to the accuracy line but not touching or going past will be used to determine who wins the accuracy competition. Try building something from SNOW BRICKS. A maximum of 10 scouts can work on any snow brick project. The rules are simple: 1. Turn in plans at Cracker Barrel for your structure. 2. Structure must be made from BLOCKS. Structures will be judged before closing ceremonies on how close you followed the plan and on the complexity Tentative Venture Scouts (2649 & 2526) Troop 676 (snow snakes and run) Need judges
(Updated January 11, 2018) 8 and elaborateness of your completed project. For more information about SNOW BRICKS, see information in this guide under resources. Carpool and bring the SMALL trailer if you need to. Be ready to haul gear up to quarter mile through snow (need sleds). Yeti Safety The Yeti in this area is known as the Absaroka Yeti. They often appear in January and February, and we are lucky to have a space dedicated to their preservation. They are not the largest of the YETI, and average 6 Feet tall and about 250 lbs although have been known to be larger. These animals are endangered and under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you to approach them. They react badly to pepper or bear spray if has no affect and makes them very mad. They generally stay away from open fire, so this is a good defense during dark, and hopefully we will have torch light and campfires to help improve Yeti safety during the Camporee.
(Updated January 11, 2018) 9 If you see a Yeti, stay quiet and hopefully they will ignore you. If charged by a Yeti, treat the attack the same as you would a Grizzly Bear. Fall down and play possum. Likely, they will leave you alone once you are no longer a threat. Yeti bites require immediate first aid. Immobilize any bites (similar to a break) and victims should be watched closely for signs of shock due to a mild toxin in Yeti bites. Please report all Yeti sightings to Camporee staff. SPLS will be given an update about Yeti activity at Cracker Barrel. Activity Safety and Gear We will follow BSA safety for any activity. See Guide to Safe Scouting if you have questions. Merit Badges Crew Electives WEBELOS Adventures Scouts can take initiative on what Merit Badge skills they are working on. Cooking, scout skills, leadership, shooting, and winter sports are all part of camporee. Arrow of Light (2 nd year Webelos) at Camporees (5 th grade only) Scoutmasters don t forget to invite those Arrow of Light scouts! You should also help them prepare, and make sure they stay with you Scout unit. They can come up for just the day, or the whole campout if you feel they are ready. Having Arrow of Light (formerly 2 nd year WEBELOS) at camporee is an excellent way to help them get excited about Boy Scouts, however, the Cub Scout Leaders need to make sure the Camporee is within the ability of the Arrow of Light Scout, and to make sure the Arrow of Light is attached to a Scouting Unit. Tiger, Wolf, and Bear rank Cub Scouts should not attend Camporees. When Arrow of Light attendance at Camporees is well planned and the preparation steps are followed, it can be a really exciting event. When a Scout isn t yet ready for the experience, or prepared and connected to a Scout unit, it can have
(Updated January 11, 2018) 11 the unfortunate consequence that the boy doesn t want to stay in Scouts. For this reason, only Second Year (5 th Grade) Cub Scouts are invited to Camporee. For this Camporee, Cub Masters/Den Leaders should follow this procedure: 1. Registration a. Arrow of Light Scouts must be registered through a Boy Scout Unit. b. Payment for Camporee is to the Boy Scout Unit. The Boy Scout unit will pay for the WEBELOS at camporee. c. Cost for Arrow of Light Scouts is $5.00, and Parents is $5.00 d. Scout Masters Please contact the Arrow of Light Den Leader (s) and invite them to attend with your Troop! Let them know any dates the Arrow of Light should attend Troop meetings related to camporee preparation. 2. Preparation a. Arrow of Light Cub Scouts can participate in everything BUT canoeing. 3. Supervision a. Arrow of Light Cub Scouts must camp with a Scout Unit. The Cub Master/Den Leader should connect with the Scout Master well in advance and work out preparation. b. Arrow of Light Cub Scouts must have a PARENT (or legal guardian) along on the campout. They cannot just go by themselves with the troop. Any exception to this must be cleared through the Camping Chair Bill Otto. Resources Snow Bricks Snow bricks are best constructed using beach buckets, plastic storage boxes, or anything with a uniform shape that's easy to fill. The best snow for creating bricks and snowballs is moist packing snow not powder. This kind of snow will form easily into blocks, much the way wet sand works for sand castles. If, however, powdery snow is all you've got, look for snow that's closer to the street or house, or what has accumulated around landscaping. It will be warmer and wetter, and so better for snow-fort bricks. If time is short, grab that Igloo cooler out of storage and use it for making large bricks quickly. Keep yardsticks or old paint stirrers handy to separate the snow from the bucket. After you assemble your bricks, if you can spray water to form a coat of ice, great. Water sprayed between blocks can also help them hold together. Snow Snakes Snow Snake Construction History Snow snakes were a Seneca Indian sport of strength and skill. The game was simple. Slide a long smooth stick along a trough in the snow the farthest. This required not just strength, but an accurate eye and great skill at placing the snake properly in the trough to enable it to travel the maximum distance. Snow snakes were between 5 and 9 feet long and were made of hickory, maple or walnut wood. They were superbly designed for speed and, if skillfully handled, traveled with the velocity of a loosed arrow. To give the stick sufficient weight, its conical head was enlarged and beveled up in the shape of a snake's head. The trough was made by dragging a smooth debarked log lengthwise through the snow several times until the trench was about 1500 feet long and at least 10 inches deep. Any number could play the game individually or as team members. In addition to active participants, each side also had snake "doctors" who cared for the sticks, rubbing them with
(Updated January 11, 2018) 12 "medicine" (beeswax or animal oils) to reduce their friction. Contests were judged by umpires who made certain the rules of the game were strictly observed. Materials Needed: 3/4 to 5/4 thick hardwood or pine board 6 6 long and 1 1/2 wide, wood glue, brad nails Construction: The snake is six foot long and about 1 1/2 inches high at the 4 to 6 inch long head. There is a smooth notch for a finger at the end of the stick. The head of this stick is carved in the shape of a snake, with eyes and a mouth. The underside of the head should curve up like a ski. The eyes of the snake were often weighted. The rounded head allows the snake to pass easily over the snow. The bottom is rounded and the top behind the head is flat. Decorations and carvings should be done on the non-sliding surfaces. To construct, cut a 6 piece off one end of 9 the stick and attach to the top as shown above. Shape the head of the snake with a wood rasp and sand paper. Be careful not to make it top heavy! Paint and decorate the "snake". Carve or shape the snake with a wood rasp and sand paper. Be careful not to make the top to heavy. Paint and decorate the snake. Polyurethane, gloss alkyd or latex paints all work well. Use several coats of auto wax for a highly polished surface.
(Updated January 11, 2018) 13 The Trough Track : The Trough is made by dragging a smoothbarked 10 inch diameter log lengthwise through the snow packing it firmly and removing any protruding objects. The track should be 100 to 150 yards long. Setup wooden stakes at 100 intervals along one side of trough and label distances from start line. Use a 100 vinyl measuring tape to measure between stakes. If sub freezing conditions exist then the trough can be hand sprayed with water an hour before competition. The Game: Scouts throw a six foot long hand crafted stick from a starting line into a hard packed snow or ice trough. Javelin thrown snakes and snakes not gliding in trough are disqualified. Practice throws are not allowed in the competition trough. You will have to go elsewhere to practice. Each Scout s best of TWO throws in the competition troughs will count towards the patrol score. If you chose not to make a snow snake, you may still compete with a Scout stave. But do not expect much of a score for distance, as they tend to "dig-in". Throwing a snow snake effectively requires both strength and accuracy. The arm movement is a cross between a baseball side-arm pitch and a bowling delivery. With one finger on the tail of the snake and the other hand balancing the forward portion of the stick, the player leans toward the ground (see illustration) before taking a few steps toward the prepared track. With a flick of the arm and wrist, the player sends the stick down the track Guests (Camporees are always RECRUITING EVENTS) Guests are encouraged at this Camporee. Any youth not with a unit who wants to come to the Camporee will be connected to a unit. Whether you bring a guest, or are connected to a guest via the Scout office, please make sure the guest is made to feel welcome and that this is a positive introduction to Scouting. Follow-up with application information and encourage them to join scouting as part of your unit! Guests are only $5, the scout assigned as primary host is $5 as well.
