1 Spring, Portage, Michigan Save the Date for the Annual Meeting: The annual meeting of the Austin Lake Riparians will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, from 7:00-8:30 PM at the Portage Library in the Austin Lake Meeting Room. Come meet your neighbors and learn more about your lake. Agenda: Call to order Pledge of allegiance Introduction of board members Introduction of guests President's report Treasurer's report Social Committee report Newsletter & Website report Lake Health Portage Environmental Board Sheriff s Department Boating Safety and Q & A Election of Officers Adjournment Dead but not gone? By Meredith Zettlemoyer Wanted dead or maybe alive? We know what plant species called Austin Lake home back in the 1930s and 1940s because of the work done by Clarence and Florence Hanes, two local botanists occupying themselves during the Great Depression by adding to the natural history of Kalamazoo County. This work, which began as a way to curtail stress and distract themselves from financial losses, expanded into a permanent collection of botanical specimens and field notes that would one day be the first Flora of Kalamazoo County. Today, Meredith Zettlemoyer, a graduate student at Kellogg Biological Station, is updating their historical surveys to see if anything is truly dead and buried. The Hanes studied Austin Lake intensely, partially because they enjoyed visiting its old sand dunes. From their notebooks, we know that the lake hosted 150 species, including an unusual collection of rare plants have any of them permanently disappeared? Or are some still refugees along the shoreline? Look out for some of these species throughout the summer: the adder s fork fern, with its snakelike spiked fronds (Ophioglossum vulgatum); bearberry, a subarctic shrub important to folk medicine (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi); the winged loosestrife, native sister to our invasive loosestrife (Lthyrym alatum), or the grasspink, an orchid whose tiny pink flowers form a beard around the stem (Calopogon pulchellus). Is ledge spikemoss (Selaginella rupestris) soft, like moss, or thorny? Look for nodding lady s tresses (Spiranthes cernua) is this fringed orchid is dainty as its name suggests? These are but a few of the rare plants that once called Austin Lake home. The lake, as it turns out, was a botanical hotspot. Meredith will be surveying the lakeshore beginning in June, searching for these rare species and investigating which species have disappeared and why. She s excited to talk to anyone about the plants she s finding along the lakeshores, and would love help exploring! 1 Contact her at zettlem2@msu.edu with questions or to chat about your own finds. What was thought to be dead may not be gone.
2 From the Austin Lake Riparians Board Austin Lake Riparians, Inc. 5 Catamarans on the Lake By Win Larsen Tuesday nights on the lake you will see a number of catamaran sailboats sailing around in what looks like a confused mass of brightly colored sails. It is actually the Austin Lake Catamaran Association (ALCA) of western Michigan and it is quite organized. There are two races each Tuesday and we race from May 2 nd through September 5 th. Come race with us!!! All two hull sailboats are welcome to come out and race. Minimal knowledge of sailing and racing is necessary. When the wind is up, it s fast paced and an excellent work-out. For Tuesday night spectators, please hang out with your boats to watch the racing at least 200 upwind of the single orange buoy or 200 downwind below the two orange buoys. Please don t drift or anchor in between them, as this is considered the race course and the sailboats need ½ mile in width to race. This is a great way to entertain friends and relatives and enjoy our beautiful lake! Check out our website and follow the sailors nightly racing results at If you are interested in racing, either with a boat, or as a crew, please contact one of the following: Cesar Santana Commodore csantana823@gmail.com Jerry Mohney Principle Race Officer jmohney@sbcglobal.net Win Larsen Past Commodore win.larsen@charter.net Austin Lake Events for 2017 By Dani Kinder July 1 at 2pm boat tie up.
