Name and address of class and school: Knoxdale Public School Number of students in class and school In our class: 25 In the school: There is a total of 634 students in Knoxdale.

3. Size of school This took a lot of calculations but here it is! The area of the school is 3808meters squared. This includes the 7 portable classrooms located outside the school building. If you don t know what a portable is, consider yourself lucky!! ;0) It s like a trailer that s used as a room for teaching. Our class has been housed in one for four years now. Our principal calls them Learning Challets but I m not that fond of them 4. School emblem, colors or mascot Our school has an emblem- it s like two children holding hands and it says that A Knoxdale On Grandit. This means that At Knoxdale We Grow. Our colours are blue and white- like the colour of these letters. And we have a pretty new mascot- the eagle. He was just adopted about three years ago and now our gym is called the Eagle s nest because of him. 5. Type and number of computers In the whole school we have 108 computers. This includes the computers we have in our classroom (5) and the computer lab (32). 6. School history The school was built in 1968.

B. School program 1. List 3 things about your school program that make it unique. Our school is a French Immersion Centre with two entry points- you can either start in Kindergarten at age 5 or you can start in grade 4. Yes, we do have English classes (English and Math must be taught in English) but most of the subjects are taught in French. Secondly, we have the gifted program and students from all over the area who are designated as gifted after a series of tests are allowed to apply for a spot in this class. There is a limit to 25 students in this class. Thirdly, we have a wide variety of clubs offered at our school. One of the favourite clubs for our class is the juggling club. Students from my class actually serve as mentors to younger or less experienced jugglers and teach them juggling techniques. Their favourite piece of equipment is called a diabolo which looks like two round ups joined at the centre which they then balance on a string, throw in the air and do other tricks with. 2. List school calendar from the session dates (holidays and special events that may affect your participation). Well, we ve already had Thanksgiving weekend (2 nd Monday in Oct). On Oct 31 st the students will celebrate Hallowe en by dressing up in different costumes and going house to house collecting candy. On November 11, we celebrate Remembrance Day which is a day set aside to remember the soldiers who have fought in wars or who are fighting in wars around the world. Christmas and New Year s holidays mean we are out of school from Dec 21 Jan 1! Yay!! PART III. INTRODUCING THE COMMUNITY A. Your community 1. Name of your community Our school is located in a part of Ottawa called Nepean. Ottawa is the capital of Canada (pretty easy to find on a map, then!) but it contains several sections like suburbs. Our part is called Nepean, which is to the south-west of the downtown city. Because our class is a special congregated gifted class, our students come from many different suburbs including Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven. 2. If not a city, name and size of nearest city 3. Location of your community Geographically we re easy to find on a map- just look for the capital of Canada in the province of Ontario! Coordinates would be about 46 degrees N, and about 75 degrees W. 4. The area of your community We re unsure of the area of the city sorry!

5. The population of your community There are about people that live in Ottawa B. Special characteristics 1. List 3 reasons why people come to visit your area. Three reasons to visit Ottawa in the spring/summer: The various Museums in Ottawa, such as the Civilization Museum, the Canadian Art Gallery, the War Museum, and many others encourage people to visit Ottawa. Festivals, such as the Tulip Festival, the Writer's Festival, the Children's Festival, the Garlic festival as well as many others also attract tourists. The Parliament Hill is also a popular attraction. Some reasons to visit Ottawa in the fall/winter: ByWard Market- a great spot for shopping and a popular gathering area downtown. Rideau Canal- in summer, a boating adventure, in winter it becomes the longest outdoor skating rink in the world! Winterlude is the official winter festival in Ottawa and this draws huge crowds. People enjoy eating Beaver Tails (a pastry, not the actual tail of a beaver!) and other tasty treats like maple sugar hot chocolate. Gatineau Park- around this time of year when the leaves are changing, it offers breathtaking views and amazing hiking trails. Parc Omega- a very special animal drive-through safari in which you can see most of the animals of Canada in their natural habitat. 2. Describe any unusual land formation found in or near your community. Gatineau Park Gatineau Park measures 361 square kilometers. There are many rocky trails to follow throughout the park, and you may see many animals and unusual plants. There are more than 50 kinds of trees found there, and various other things to do other than walking on the trails. Natural attractions the hills of the Canadian Shield rounded off by the passage of glaciers hundreds of kilometers of trails

hundreds of species of birds and mammals 32.5 kilometers of scenic parkways lookouts with fantastic views The trails can be hiked and biked on. There is swimming available to be done and picnicking. You can camp there if it s good weather and during the winter, you can do cross- country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding. St Lawrence River The St Lawrence River is a one of the longest river flowing, connecting with the great lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the boundary between Ontario and Mew York City, USA. The river is 1997 kilometers long and it traverses through through Canada (Ontario, Quebec) United States (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York,, and Vermont, Wisconsin). )., and Ohio, Pennsylvania,

People like to ride boats, and do other water activities in the St Lawrence River in the summer, or spring. RIDEAU CANAL The Rideau Canal is 202 kilometers in length. The Rideau Canal is a national historical site of Canada. It consists of many beautiful lakes and river connected by canals. In the winter, people like to skate on the canal, and then later enjoy a nice snack of beavertails or toffee on snow. There is also lots of nice, fluffy, and white snow in which you can snowshoe in, or do cross- country skiing on. You may also do snowmobiling, and look at the nice views. But watch out! Don t fall into

the canal, where the skaters are, follow the trails. In the summer, you can enjoy a refreshing swim, do some fishing, boat, cycling, or just hike alongside the canal to see some cool animals and plants. People boating in the summer GREAT LAKES The Great Lakes are a collection of fresh lakes located in eastern North America, on the Canada- United States border. The 5 great lakes are: Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario and Lake Superior.. If you put those five lakes in the order, you can remember them by the word HOMES: : Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior. Cool, right? Some things you can do at the great lakes: 2. You can dive into the refreshing water of one of the great lakes and see many cool species of sharks and fish. 3. Go near the lakes and watch the beautiful sunset as you have a BBQ to eat your freshly caught fish 4. Didn't someone mention golf!?!? The Great Lakes have many golf courses along the way. 5. How about some whale watching? There's lots of that at Lake Michigan!! C. Industries

List major industries or occupations in your community. (student written )In Ottawa,, there are a lot of jobs. For instance the National Parliament is here and that means lots of jobs with the Government overnment.. The Prime Minister is the most important person in Canada and about 1.8 million people work for the government. In Ottawa there is also a huge technology industry. Whereas the US has silicone Valley in California, our suburb of Kanata is referred to as the Silicone Valley of the North. Agriculture is also very important in this area and there is a lot of fertile land for growing crops. Some fruits and veggies are grown in the southern part of our province due to the warmer temperatures there t but we still grow strawberries, corn, cucumbers, cauliflower, etc in this area. PART IV.
